Refugee and Immigrant Transition (RIT)
Team: Andrea Aviles Guzman, Karla Estrada, Daisy Sanchez Mendoza, Nylah Henderson

Refugee and Immigrant Transition: RIT provides free education, family engagement, and community leadership programs. Students have sought refuge due to war, violence, persecution, or economic duress. RIT’s work is rooted in a strengths-based approach to cultivate mutually beneficial cross-cultural relationships and co-create opportunities for newcomer leadership.

Project Description

Our project consisted of filming individual interviews with members of the RIT community. We focused on two volunteers and two individuals who work for RIT. We wanted to learn more about the immigrant and refugee community in the Bay Area and how RIT is helping. Our project was to focus on the lived experience of each individual and educate audience members about the importance of listening to these narratives.

Project Deliverables

We ultimately created a mini-docu series. Four 15-20 minute-long videos consisting of the stories of staff and volunteers of Refugee and Immigrant Transition. These stories hold a variety of one’s perspectives on immigration and on being a refugee themselves. Our mini-docu series is diverse, eye-opening stories coming from multiple continents around the world. It shows Western society the true reality of immigration, explaining how becoming a refugee is a necessity for one’s survival.
