Is Part Of This Song About Deadbeat Dads Who Never Made An Effort?

It does not seem to be. Some of the lyrics, namely “…you used to be my hero…” and “We lost it all…” would imply the relationship between the child and father at one point was ideal and happy, however that relationship has now been broken.

However each person can interpret the lyrics differently. Perhaps the child only thought their father was their hero because they didn’t really understand what was going on.
