Dark Ambient is an offshoot of industrial music that combined the electronic and ambient elements of krautrock (e.g. Tangerine Dream, Popol Vuh, etc.) with the noise and atmosphere of industrial. Unlike regular ambient music, which is typically meant to relax the listener, dark ambient focuses on creating unsettling atmospheres.

Dark ambient music can consist of coarse audio textures, noise, mechanical sounds, drones, and dissonance, and is usually instrumental only. The resulting sound has a dark tone, hence the name of the genre.
