About Polka
Polka is a style of dance music originating in Czechia, as well as the name of the associated dance, which typically uses a 2/4 metre. It is usually led by an accordion, often accompanied by bass and horns, although it’s not uncommon for the lead part to be played on other instruments as well, such as the Fiddle.
While it originated in 19th century Bohemia, Polka quickly spread throughout Europe, and from there to the Americas, where it found more popularity, particularly in the Midwestern United States, and influenced various other genres of music such as Norteña of Mexico and Biguine of Martinique. While Polka is far from the most popular genre, it has still been used by popular artists such as “Weird Al” Yankovic, and been combined with Rock and Pop by artists such as Brave Combo and The Dreadnoughts.
