Post-metal combines the atmospheric and ambient approach of post-rock with the metallic and heavy instrumentation of metal. As opposed to many of its riff-heavy cousins within metal, post-metal emphasizes texture and atmospheric build-up in its songs akin to post-rock. Vocals–if they exist–tend to be shouted or screamed, but clean sections (or songs) are not unheard of. Lyrics are often abstract and metaphorical, with a wide variety of subjects therein.
Due to its somewhat nebulous definition, it frequently overlaps with other genres within metal, such as atmospheric sludge metal, avant garde metal, and black metal.
