Progressive Metal (commonly referred to as prog metal or simply prog) is a subgenre of metal that walks the line between rock and metal, with many bands tagged as progressive metal also being tagged as progressive rock. The subgenre emerged out of a fusion of progressive rock with early heavy metal and notably combined the louder or heavier sound of heavy metal with the experimentation of prog rock. The sound profile of progressive metal is identifiably for using unconventional harmonies, strange time signatures, as well as syncopation.
