GIRLS INTO CODING
WE EMPOWER GIRLS TO ENGAGE IN TECH & ENGINEERING ACTIVITIES, SUPPORTING THEM THROUGH HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS; INSPIRATIONAL TECH CONTENT AND RESOURCES
Girls Into Coding provides girls aged 10 to 14 with unique hands-on experience in physical computing, robotics and coding. Our workshops and events are led by a range of Tech & Engineering mentors and educators, including girls in the same age range as the attendees.
Our vision is to see girls and women engaged in TECH & ENGINEERING activities, – equally comfortable, with an equal sense of belonging and in equal numbers.
GIRLS INTO CODING
OUR STORY & WHO WE ARE
Avye is a 18-year-old student and passionate about Tech & Engineering. In 2018, Avye, already a coder, maker, and workshop leader came up with the idea of organising coding events for girls, after repeatedly observing that most attendees at her workshops were boys. She was determined to encourage more girls to give TECH a go. As a result, she decided to set up ‘Girls Into Coding’, a series of events targeting girls.
Girls into Coding provides learning opportunities for girls between the ages of 10 and 14. We’ve created workshops and education events to immerse young people in a range of Tech & Engineering activities.
Girls into Coding is a Community Interest Company (CIC) and is regulated by the CIC regulator since February 2020. We are a mother and daughter-run social enterprise. Read more about us.
Between July 2018 and March 2020, we organised successful in-person events that inspired the launch of Girls into Coding as a Community Interest Company, fueled by Avye’s passion for tech. Since then, we have successfully conducted over 600 hands-on workshops.
Since the Pandemic, we’ve delivered 50 Virtual Girls Into Coding events comprising of well over a hundred FREE robotics, coding, physical computing, and 3D design workshops, and reaching girls throughout the UK and internationally (16 countries)! We also made a successful return to face-to-face events in November 2021 and are now delivering a hybrid offering so that the program will not be interrupted by any of the restrictions of the pandemic.
We are driven to create opportunities to engage girls in Tech & Engineering through hands-on workshops and events. We are fully committed to delivering our Girls Into Coding objectives. We have been committed to doing this both face-to-face and virtually.
What problem is Girls Into Coding addressing?
Between the age of 5 and 6, many boys and girls have an equal interest in technology. By the age of nine, a significant gap starts to emerge. The gap grows, and girls’ interest and confidence in STEM starts to drop. While this continues, women remain underrepresented in the tech industry.
Just 23% of the people working in STEM roles across the UK are female
Only 5% of leadership positions in the technology industry are held by women
How is Girls Into Coding addressing this problem?
We have designed workshops to contribute towards addressing this gap and to sustain girls’ interest, initially so that they continue pursuing STEM activities and ultimately, so they are engaged to consider STEM education & careers.
We aim to encourage more girl involvement in STEM through the provision of hands-on physical computing, robotics and coding workshops. We believe that all girls should feel empowered to access opportunities to learn how to code, develop their making and digital skills regardless of where they come from.

Inspiring our participants:
I just wanted to thank you for giving S a space on the workshop. She thoroughly enjoyed the session and will be taking her micro: bit to school to show the other students in her computing class.
Just a quick message to you & your daughter – Milla loved her workshop & the inspiring talks today… hope we will be able to come to the next workshop – it’s such a great opportunity and M really got a lot out of today. Thanks again for organising all.
Thank you for such a great afternoon. Jazzy really enjoyed it. As a STEM teacher what you are doing is fabulous and very much needed. I believe there is a massive gap between what happens in the classroom and what is out in the bigger world and all the ladies that spoke can bring that knowledge to the kids
Hi Helene, S and C both wanted me to get in touch to thank Avye, you,Phil and all the mentors and speakers for another great event. Sonia said that the speakers were really good
Hi Helene, Phil and Avye,
Just like to thank you for another excellent Girls into Coding and giving the opportunity to talk. Chloë was really buzzing all the way home.
See you soon
I wanted to express my thanks
My daughter S. came home and told me how wonderful everything was and how much she enjoyed the session
Thank you so much for organising such events and most of all for free as would not be able to afford to send her otherwise
Look forward to any future events you may have planned
Thanks
Hi Helene, Phil and Avye,
