Rebuild Hope for Persons Living with HIV (PLHIV) affected by Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica
Emergency Relief for Vulnerable Lives in Crisis
Organizer: The Jamaican Network of Seropositives (JN+) in partnership with the ASHE Otaheite Foundation
Location: Jamaica
Goal: (75,000 USD)
A Community Devastated—But Not Defeated
Hurricane Melissa has left behind massive destruction across Jamaica, particularly in Western, Southern, and Northeastern parishes. Among the hardest hit are our People Living with HIV (PLHIV) members and staff of JN+—who now face displacement, homelessness, and the interruption of lifesaving medical care.
Homes have been swept away, roofs destroyed, and personal belongings lost, including HIV medications and identification.
Basic public services like electricity and water are either unreliable or completely unavailable, and many are without access to food, shelter, or medical care.
Why Your Help is Urgently Needed
People living with HIV already face heightened vulnerability due to health conditions, stigma, and poverty. Disasters like Hurricane Melissa deepen these inequities.
Access to HIV treatment and continuity of care is now at serious risk. Without urgent intervention, we could see treatment interruptions, worsening health, and avoidable loss of life.
What We’re Doing—And What We Need
At the Jamaican Network of Seropositives (JN+) and the ASHE Otaheite Foundation, we are launching an emergency relief drive to support PLHIV and their families across the affected areas in Jamaica.
We are mobilising to provide sustained survival support for up to 4 months, to include:
• Food supplies and clean water
• Sanitary and hygiene products
• HIV medications drop off and transport support to clinics
• Nutritional support for those with chronic illness
• Emergency shelter materials (tarpaulins, bedding, roofing)
• Basic utilities (solar lights, batteries, cooking gas), etc.
Our goal is to ensure that PLHIV continue taking their HIV medications and have what they need to survive and recover in the weeks and months following this crisis.
How You Can Help
Every contribution goes directly toward PLHIV households affected by Hurricane Melissa:
• $25 = Food & hygiene kits/package for one person
• $50 = Transport + clinic visit support to refill HIV medication and see doctor
• $100 = Two-week care package: groceries, medical items, and water
• $500 = Temporary shelter and basic furniture
• $1000+ = Full recovery support for a household/Family
Other ways to help:
• Partner with us as a donor or sponsor
• Share this campaign across your networks
• Send in-kind supplies (food, bedding, hygiene, etc.) to JN+ @ 2 Duke Street, Kingston CSO, Jamaica
• Support the Government of Jamaica's urgent appeal for national and international support at https://supportjamaica.gov.jm/
Why It Matters
Our mission at JN+ and ASHE Otaheite Foundation has always been to advocate for and walk alongside people living with HIV in Jamaica. In this time of crisis, your help ensures they are not forgotten.
This is more than a fundraiser—it's a chance to restore health, hope, and humanity.
Let’s stand together to ensure that HIV care doesn't stop because of a hurricane and that the people who need the most support receive it with dignity and urgency.
WHO WE ARE
The Jamaican Network of Seropositives (JN+) is Jamaica’s longest-standing national organisation led by and for People Living with HIV (PLHIV). Founded in 1999, JN+ works to promote the health, rights, and dignity of PLHIV through advocacy, service delivery, and community empowerment.
We have an active presence in all 14 parishes, with staff, volunteers, and PLHIV membership directly engaging hundreds of PLHIV every month. JN+ partners with:
- The Ministry of Health & Wellness
- UNAIDS, USAID, PEPFAR, and global donors
- Other NGOs, clinics, hospitals, and treatment sites
- Regional and international human rights organisations
We are a registered non-profit organization with charitable status under Jamaican law, and we follow strict guidelines for financial transparency and donor accountability.
ASHE has been a dynamic force in HIV prevention, education, and stigma reduction, particularly among young people, key populations, and underserved communities. Through peer education, mobile outreach, youth-friendly clinics, and national campaigns, ASHE continues to support Jamaica’s HIV response by promoting safer sexual practices, testing, treatment adherence, and human rights using culturally relevant & creative and inclusive methods.
