And it got me thinking, is the death of DAOs upon us? There are many folks who LOATHE the concept of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (“DAO”s). And based on what is happening on the ETH and SOL side of things, it would seem obvious the idea of DAOs are dead. I personally feel differently.

Context

Lets cover how we got here. Onchain DAOs have been around since the really early days of ETH. The DAO in 2016 raised 150m in ETH early on but subsequently was hacked for about 1/3 of that which led to an ETH hardfork to be able to save investors. After that, tech matured a bit from 2019 to 2021 with the creation of Snapshot, lowering the barriers to creating and managing DAOs. This also happened to coincide with a huge NFT boom and overall market boom. The creation of DAOs exploded in 2021 and many saw them as the future of governance and coordination on the internet and in real life.

DAOs (and crypto overall) were sent into hypermode. We saw the creation of Constitution DAO, Uniswap DAO getting larger with the new inflow of money and more.

I personally was a bit skeptical of DAOs originally back in 2021, mostly due to my role in technical operations irl which makes me a bit skeptical on how hard it is to coordinate people into one direction and thought DAOs didn’t really present unique use cases to irl to justify the complexity. So I mostly left DAOs untouched and focused more on collecting NFTs and participating in crypto in other various ways like making content. But DAOs continued proliferating past 2021.

So Where Are We Now?

Fast forward to summer of 2024 and I got DAO curious and started going down the rabbit hole before continuing with my assumption that DAOs don’t work. As I was raised to not knock something until you try it and in that spirit I went down the rabbit hole. More on this later.

DAOs today reflect a lot of what we see in the real world. We see multiple DAOs or groups within DAOs (think House of Reps vs Senate in US Government). We see a Public Goods DAO vs an Ecosystem DAO all within the same community. The maturity, tooling and structure continue getting better day by day. But many still believe DAOs are not delivering on what they promised (a better way to operate than irl).

And most of these people may be right. For example, ENS DAO to get a prop up you need 100k ENS tokens which on todays price is over 1M USD. 1M tokens for Uniswap which is over 6M USD today. We have voter fatigue, in NounsDAO for example folks have voted on over 800 props since inception with most major DAOs hovering around 100-200 and a few 300. People feeling like only the same teams, people keep getting funding or their ideas get support vs new voices. Voting on L1 can get expensive. The tools are still lagging.

Why This Week?

So why I am here telling you this week may be a pivotal week for DAOs? There are a couple signals in my mind that I see.

ETH Side

The first one is AIP-596 by ApeCoin DAO. ApeCoin DAO was created back in early 2022 and since has seen close to 600 props, really active like Nouns and with BAYC recently changing leadership again (with Garga coming back). This prop is going to pass and people are celebrating. Many will view this as a prime example of why DAOs don’t work. I think it is a more of a representation of where BAYC is now a project vs where it was back in 2022. As an example, a BAYC back in early 2022 would easily go for over 125 ETH.

The new leadership thinks they can be more agile with shutting down the DAO, and that is probably accurate. If they view DAOs as a way to run every single decision via prop then yes that will be cumbersome. What the team could have done instead is create another group, pass a prop to seed that group and you would still get the same result. A set of funds the leadership can use at their discretion without votes and move quickly. We are seeing this idea pop up even on the Solana side of things with Metadao talking about their Futarchy DAO launcher and how it will work to benefit not just token holders but also the founder. The same could have been recreated with ApeCoin DAO but instead now the sole responsibility will fall on the leadership and the bottoms up approach is gone.

SOL Side

This week we saw Jupiter DAO “pause” their DAO. With Jupiter siting it was to protect the voter which is a really weird thing to say. I personally vote in Juptier DAO and felt the seasons approach led to little fatigue imo. Maybe its because Nouns have now trained me to operate at a higher capacity but DAOs overall in the Sol side of things are depressing compared to ETH. If Jupiter is able to “pause” a DAO did you really ever have a DAO?

Surprisingly, DAOs on the Solana side of things were starting to feel a bit more fresh to me compared to the ETH side of it. The culture on the ETH side of things feels more monolithic compared to SOL especially on the Metadao side of things where they leverage Futarchy. My only issue with the Solana side of things when it comes to DAOs is the lack of DAOs to participate in, how there is less of a culture of it therefore the tools are non existent. For example, I would forget to vote sometimes on Jupiter DAO because there wasn’t a really easy mobile version for voting compared to ETH where you can use apps like Lighthouse and Goverland.

Jupiter DAO is one of the larger DAOs on the Solana side of things and I really hope the team doesn’t shut it down. They can definitely plan their structure and what will work for best for them and their token holders but pausing it really takes the air out of the DAO sails on the Solana side of things.

Why I Remain Hopeful

So even with all this news, I still remain hopeful and optimistic on DAOs. As many of my readers know, its in my nature so that might be playing into it. But I have now spent the last year diving deeper and deeper into DAOs and still feel this way. We all should not be rooting for DAOs to disappear especially this week which I suspect we will see people writing titles how DAOs are dead probably because of the passing of the prop from ApeCoin.

I still feel bullish on DAOs as a bottoms up approach to growing and building community. It is what I have been doing with my content for the past 2.5 years and its not easy, as anyone that has tried building a community in web3 can tell you. Many of the Discord servers I am a member of are dead, most projects are dead, but this doesn’t mean web3 is dead.

My take is, like everything else the truth is somewhere in the middle. Just like how many ICO projects are dead but we have some that survived. NFT projects became easy to create, but only few survived 2021-2024. Now we have tokens being launched daily, few will survive. This is the same for DAOs, many got created but many will fail. ApeCoin DAO may die, but many of the largest DAOs in the space continue experimenting which is something that is crucial for our space to grow.

Recent experiments and Ideas that give me hope. I participated in Optimisms experiment with Futarchy/Conditional Funding Markets and will do so with Uniswap. Metadao is tweaking their formula for Futarchy driven DAOs and it was awesome to participate in Flash Trade where people got to vote on what to do with the extra revenue. The lighthouse team, trying to find new ways to surface new ideas in DAOs with Signals Protocol. DAOs are not a one size fits all, it doesn’t solve all your issues, it may not even be the right fit for your org.

Fin

As always, have a great rest of your week. Keep an eye out as I have two exciting podcast episodes coming up with Cap from the Namespace team and Jango from the Juicebox/Revnets team.

If you enjoyed this article, I am also running a fundraiser to get myself to Devconnect this year as I have never been to an ETH conference before. It has been a minute. I hope you are all doing well and taking care of yourself during these interesting markets and time. As the weather gets nicer definitely take the time to take care of yourself and your loved ones. Let’s dive in with the new format.

Gramajo’s Corner

It is wild how quickly a habit of something can die. Around late end of last year, I decided to take a break from weekly hustle of getting a newsletter out to you all on a weekly basis to focus on some more creative work or work I had more passion in at that moment. It was great to unplug to be honest but it has a been a struggle getting back on that horse. In the timeframe I focused on building a mini app (done), a TG bot (done), focus on the podcast (done), learn more about DeFi (done). Overall it was a great time of exploration and reset for me. But I missed writing and have been missing writing for quite sometime. So finally I decided it was time to get this back up again. My focus will remain the same but the cadence will shift. I thrive on tinkering, learning new things and talking to folks with new ideas or different ideas than mine. So I need breathing room for that.

Speaking of, this past 12 months or so I have been focusing on meeting more folks irl and this has been amazing. Early on in my involvement with crypto it was really lonesome. 2013-2017 was a pretty lonely time and the market downswings did not help. But I find myself being so engaged this time around compared to before. And a lot of it I attribute to finding my tribe, people still creating and building on web3, people experimenting and challenging the status quo. I went to Farcon earlier this month and the amount of HIGH quality people in a small area was invigorating. Usually at conferences I find myself drained (socially) from talking to folks but with Farcon it felt electric, I was out and about for over 14 hours and was tired physically but my social battery was charged up.

If you were not able to attend or are hesitant to meet folks irl, I suggest you go out there and meet people around you or if you’re like me organize something because sometimes that is what it takes. Also highly suggest you watch this discussion between Dan (creator of Farcaster) and Fred (VC). This conversation got me fired up to continue building my content throughout the ups and downs.

Some more from me before moving on. These next 6 months, I plan to write more consistently on this newsletter. Podcast will continue chugging along and I have some great guests lined up for you. I still spend a decent chunk of time on Farcaster, Telegram and chatting on spaces. I’ll be deep diving more into ENS DAO and Gnosis DAO (more on that soon). I am spinning up an ETH and Gnosis node/validator. Probably cook a mini app and continue hosting meet ups and learning. Diving deeper into the Golf rabbit hole. So if you’re ever in the Bay Area or want to hit up a course (I still suck a ton), let me know.

Web3 Insights

A year or so ago, Shopify had been exploring more ways to incorporate crypto into their platform. They have now gone full degen mode with Shopify allowing retailers to accept USDC on Base easily. I know there is a ton of anger on why Base but I don’t doubt they will accept USDC on Sol and other fast chains in the future. If Coinbase/Base brokered and pushed for this deal, I dont see why they shouldnt get first mover advantage. Either way, as someone who got their first Nouns prop passed and need to sell something physical I look forward to using Shopify and enabling this.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

PudgyPenguins continues dominating in the category of PFP project that is relentless of expanding their IP in web2 world. had a major hack recently on Sui. And you personally may not use Sui but attacks like these make the rounds in web2 space and give us a bad rep. An interesting wrinkle in this event is the validators got together quickly and made it so the wallet that had all the funds could not complete a tx because they were all coordinated and reject it. It was interesting to me to see some of the reactions from this but it did remind me that some folks have not been around in web3 long enough to have experienced a fork before. Bitcoin Classic and Bitcoin Cash come to mind for me as some notable ones, even Eth Classic. More recently if you joined in 2021 there is still the old ETH POW version running ETHW. It has always been the case that validators can coordinate and do something like this. It might be easier with SUI if they don’t have many validators.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Either way, with 4% back in BTC this card will be a strong contender for me to add. Been itching to get rid of my Gemini card and this may fit the bill. The only issue I have with it, is the % back is tied to funds locked in with Coinbase and I am not down for that type of behavior. I get it from Coinbase perspective but I dont hold funds in CEX. Either way, as an investor of Coinbase, user of CB and a fan of metal black amex cards (remember that delta one) this one goes hard. AMEX has been doing a great job of targeting younger folks to their brand and this card will help it continue moving in that trend.

Parasite Pool. One of the coolest things I have seen in a minute coming from the BTC side of things. Early on, one of my favorite parts about Bitcoin was that anyone could spin up a node and mine Bitcoin with relatively accessible hardware. As the years went by, it got harder and harder and the average joe could no longer really participate. I still have a node of the BTC blockchain but haven’t done much mining (on BTC) in at least 4 years, till now. Parasite pool combines the hashpower from a bunch of degens in the hopes we will mine a block and split the revenue amongst ourselves. Think Lido or Rocketpool but on BTC. Definitely check it out and let me know if you go down the rabbit hole.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

I am always a sucker for tech that bridges irl to url. href="https://farcaster.xyz/megapot/0xe3213676">Ticket pooling is what it sounds like, you and your buddies buy tickets for a pool and if any ticket wins in that pool everyone in that pool wins. Degening with friends is always way more fun than doing things alone. The great thing about web3 is that you dont have to trust a centralized person to be honest, this whole thing is written on a smart contract and you just trust the blockchain/smart contract. More apps should explore these types of concepts as trying to coordinate something like this IRL could get painful real quickly especially since Megapot right now is over $1M USDC which is enough to corrupt most folks.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Chinmay opens up about his journey from open source developer to startup founder, sharing the highs and lows—from landing big-name clients like Budweiser and Playboy, to weathering bear markets and pivoting products when the time is right.

We explore Chinmay’s latest venture, Basket—a permissionless tool that lets users create and share baskets of tokens, making it easier than ever for others to copy trade and diversify into meme coins and more. Chinmay sheds light on the challenges of finding product-market fit, the importance of timing in crypto, and the lessons he’s learned about building fast, listening to users, and navigating regulatory ambiguity.

Together, we unpack deeper questions about what really belongs on the blockchain, ownership versus speculation, and how the future of onchain social apps might look—plus, some candid reflections on community, experimentation, and even favorite snacks. This provocative question launches our deep dive with Moritz, co-founder of FluidKey, into the world of privacy-preserving technologies in cryptocurrency.

Moritz shares how his journey began while living abroad in Africa, witnessing firsthand how cryptocurrencies could solve real problems in countries where traditional financial systems falter. This experience, combined with his own frustrations managing multiple wallets to protect his privacy, led to the creation of FluidKey – a smart wallet that uses stealth addresses to shield users' financial activities without sacrificing regulatory compliance.

The privacy paradox of public blockchains becomes startlingly clear when we explore real-world scenarios. Your ENS domain or wallet address essentially becomes a transparent window into your entire financial life – revealing every transaction, every payment received, and every financial decision you make. For professionals receiving income on-chain, this creates an unprecedented level of exposure that would be unthinkable in traditional finance. FluidKey's approach tackles this problem by generating new, unlinked addresses for each transaction, preventing the aggregation of financial data that compromises privacy.

We venture into the fascinating technical landscape of privacy-enhancing technologies, exploring how stealth addresses work alongside emerging innovations like privacy pools. Unlike controversial mixers of the past, these new technologies incorporate safeguards to prevent illicit use while still protecting legitimate users. Moritz explains how combining these approaches creates a powerful privacy toolkit that feels as seamless as using a conventional wallet but with significantly enhanced protection.

The conversation culminates with a glimpse into FluidKey's latest innovations, including an auto-yield feature that automatically earns interest the moment funds hit your account – demonstrating how privacy-focused tools can actually deliver superior user experiences compared to their non-private counterparts.

Whether you're a privacy advocate, a crypto professional concerned about financial exposure, or simply curious about the future direction of blockchain technology, this episode offers valuable insights into how we can build a more private yet compliant digital financial ecosystem. Try FluidKey today and experience the peace of mind that comes with controlling your financial privacy.

Support the show

This whole podcast can be found onchain, check out my page if you would like to mint this episode.

Want to ask me a question, want to hear about a specific topic, or interview a specific artist, send me a message.

Want to give me feedback on this podcast?
