champion inclusion and celebrate diversity.
Autism, I Am Not a Stigma
In 2023, the GUBA Foundation launched its flagship awareness campaign: “Autism, I Am Not a Stigma”. This initiative aimed to demystify autism and reduce the deep-rooted stigma surrounding neurodevelopmental conditions in African and Black communities in the UK, Ghana, and beyond.
Over two years, the campaign successfully:
- Held over 15 community outreach events across churches, schools, and local centers.
- Facilitated Parent Support Circles, creating safe spaces for parents of children with Special Educational Needs (SEND).
- Trained over 50 Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCOs) and teachers through workshops.
- Launched an Autism podcast, platforming stories from SEND parents, educators, and advocates.
- Supported families with referrals to psychological assessments, EHCP navigation, and SEND school placements.
Highlights from our work in the UK
Every child deserves to be understood and supported. Yet across the UK, many neurodiverse children are still waiting far too long for help. The National Autistic Society reports over 236,000 people are currently waiting for an autism assessment, with 89% waiting well beyond the recommended 13 weeks. For many families especially those from minoritised communities the wait can feel lonely and overwhelming.
GUBA Foundation is here to make sure families don’t face this journey alone. We believe in every child’s potential and we are here to help families unlock it.
Through early guidance, practical tools and culturally sensitive advocacy, we give parents the confidence and clarity they need while they wait for assessments. Our support helps children thrive at home, in school and in their communities. Our programmes are built with parents and carers, creating trusted spaces, peer support and everyday solutions that make life easier.
We offer practical, community‑based support for families of neurodiverse children from one‑to‑one guidance and workshops to Makaton training, counselling and help with EHCPs.
Parents often tell us how quickly things start to make sense once they connect with our team.
