An aquarell image of a smiling Francesco Schwarz.

Hi, I’m Francesco. I’m a Frontend Developer based in Munich, Germany. Welcome to my little corner of the web.

This site is my self-hosted home: a place to write, experiment, and document what I’m up to. You’ll find articles, media logs, activities, check-ins, and more. I’m trying to publish here first, then share things elsewhere. Find out more about me.

  1. The Long Farewell to Mark Zuckerberg’s Metaverse via nytimes.com

Meta announced changes that effectively leave Mr. Zuckerberg’s vision of an immersive digital world based in virtual reality only on life support.

    $80 billion invested. Wow.

This reader comment sums it up perfectly:

The idea of interacting in a virtual world with an avatar versus in reality sounds so unhealthy and depressing to me. How does this benefit humanity? Fix the myriads of problems (massive spread of disinformation and propaganda, child porn, violence, radicalization, dismantling of trust in experts, rising rates of youth anxiety/depression/suicide) that existing tech is causing for humanity before creating more tech that can be exploited by people with bad intentions or that will exacerbate the problems of already vulnerable people.
I do not trust Meta or Mark Zuckerberg to create products that are good for the world, only products that will make them money.

  2. Boredom Is the Price We Pay for Meaning via theatlantic.com

“Everything that displays a pattern is pregnant with boredom,” Brodsky told those flabbergasted undergrads. Of course, much of what displays a pattern—lifelong friendships, enduring marriages, serious scholarship, the making of art, prayer, Sunday mornings in winter—is also pregnant with meaning. Boredom is the price we pay for a life rich with meaning. Recognizing this makes the feeling more endurable.
