Hardest watch of the year. Baker used a magical plot tool to make the story work, but that’s what many men do to women through abuse. He created a trigger machine without actually thinking hard about what the choices he made meant for the experience but also for the characters.
The conflict of the film is a non-consensual activity created by an abusive, selfish protagonist, and through that all that the film does is create violence against one woman’s body…
Feels like every shot is the wrong shot.
Feels like every intention is badly stated.
Feels like almost every delivery is horrible (bad casting), in combination with bad direction and a mix that makes this feel dubbed.
And an editing that makes it all feel worse.
I mean, they want to convince you the protagonist is a good actor but he can’t show any other layer of emotion besides that one. Like a seller trying to convince you the car is fast but doesn’t go beyond the 1st march.
Truly a waste of time.
I have studied Spielberg since I became passionate about filmmaking, back in early 2008, and has often struck me how he approaches the medium with the energy, ingenuity and passion of a kid, sometimes also as naive - good and bad, but I mean it mostly as a compliment. He has crafted some crazy stories, but they are always so human. In the age of AI, I appreciate it a lot.
