MENTAL HEALTH IN CHILDREN (PART 2) Understanding Emotional Distress in Primary Care ST ANN'S BAY, St Ann; May 13, 2026 Dr Rochelle Bailey made the point in Part 1 of this article that children sometimes express their needs and concerns not in words but in actions picked up by the family physician and then requiring referral to specialists CHILDREN & MENTAL HEALTH. In this, the second part of her article exclusive to the North Coast Times, Dr Bailey, referencing her experience, suggests that healing is “not confined to clinical spaces.” -- Editor By Dr Rochelle Bailey In Jamaica and across the Caribbean, family structures are often shaped by migration, economic necessity, and shifting social dynamics. Many children maintain emotional bonds with parents who are not consistently physically present. Research suggests that approximately 40 percent of children experience at least one adverse childhood experience, including separation from a primary caregiver. These…

Strong Minds, Safer Future: What Children Are Really Telling Us in the Clinic This is the first of a two-part article on children and mental health, the focus of Child Month. This was written by family physician Dr Rochelle Bailey, exclusively for the North Coast Times -- The Editor By Dr. Rochelle A. Bailey The theme for Child Month 2026, “Prioritise Our Children’s Mental Health: Strong Minds, Safer Future,” is not merely aspirational. It is deeply rooted in what we encounter daily in clinical practice across Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. As a family physician, I have learned that children rarely present with mental health concerns in ways that are immediately recognisable. Instead, they present with patterns, with repetition, and quite often, with physical symptoms that quietly point to emotional distress. Globally, approximately 1 in 5 children and adolescents live with a mental health condition, and nearly 50 per cent of…

WHAT WE SAY AND HOW WE RESPOND ARE IMPORTANT TO THOSE WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES (Part 2) ST ANN'S BAY, St Ann; Jan 24, 2026 In the first of this two-part series on mental health, Dr Rochelle Bailey, assigned to the St Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital, set out some of the considerations involving mental health and some issues that result in less than the best responses by members of the general population to someone who has mental health issues. DISMANTLING MENTAL HEALTH BARRIERS IN JAMAICA (Part 1) She picks up by pointing out that many in need of mental health support and care do not reach out. -- Editor By Dr Rochelle Bailey Mental health disorders also affect children. Research suggests that around 34 percent of children under 14 exhibit mental health symptoms, with that figure rising to nearly 48 percent by the age of 18. These statistics reflect a…

MENTAL HEALTH & YOU ST ANN'S BAY, St Ann; Jan 22, 2026 By Dr. Rochelle Bailey It’s worth it. We have decided to carry this article by Dr Rochelle Bailey in two parts to give readers a chance to share the insights and suggestions for helping improve mental health and how we, the public, deal with its manifestations -- Editor Mental health is not frailty. It is not a moral deficiency. It is not something to be derided or disregarded. Yet in Jamaica, too many individuals navigating psychological distress encounter judgment instead of understanding, ridicule instead of care, and silence instead of solace. This article emerges from my experiences observing how others react to persons in mental crisis. The words that are used, the laughter, the jeering, the mocking, and the refusal to engage with someone who is suffering from an invisible wound are far too common. Many do not…
