Oxford, MS
Named after another Oxford, the one in England, the city was incorporated in 1837 and became home to the state’s first university – the University of Mississippi – in 1848.
While Ole Miss makes Oxford a college town, the city is much more. The city’s epicenter is the renowned Oxford Square, home to iconic restaurants and unique shops like Neilson’s, the South’s oldest department store.
Its nickname of “Cultural Mecca of the South” recognizes the creativity of musicians, artists and writers who helped make the city what it is today. So, it’s no surprise that Oxford has received many recent accolades, from Livability.com, Conde Nast Traveler and Southern Living.
