Some more, some less, but we’re getting quite a lot of player feedback and for that we’re extremely grateful. One of the most common complaints we kept hearing is the absence of healing items which makes sense. Imagine you score quite a big chunk of change, ready to extract, but you’re low on health. At that point your chances of survival are pretty slim. If only you had a health pack. <strong>IF ONLY THIS GAME HAD HEALTH PACKS.</strong> We kinda anticipated this to be one of the most common complaints about the game. So why didn’t we fix it? Good question.</p><figure><img alt="" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/204/1*sEZKc1T8P67fuXLwBQe7RA.jpeg" /></figure><h4>Why health boosts was not our initial plan?</h4><p>One of the core themes of Engines of Fury is this sense of a harsh world. This is a world where the survival of the human race is at stake, one where just existing is a privilege. So. You know. Health packs? What’s harsh about health packs? Someone might just stack up on ’em and be essentially indestructible. This also removes any sense of fairness since players that have been playing the game for long enough will probably be too difficult to face for everyone else. Essentially, health packs had the ability to singlehandedly ruin the entire feel of the world. You’ll even notice that there are no healing abilities available to the players at all. Some of you, who have been with us long enough will remember that earlier versions of the game actually had a few healing skills, but those got removed.</p><p>So was the plan to never have any healing in the game? Do we just have to learn to live with this? Nah, of course not. What we wanted to do was get healing to feel the way we wanted to feel. A way that would enhance the player experience instead of breaking it. So how will it work then?</p><p><strong>So how it works?</strong><br>The Infection was our first try run with healing items.<br>Some areas of the map is covered in a mutated organic matter — The Infection. This matter is a massive living organism that overtook the area. It is the origin of the mutants. In these infected areas you can find unique loot. All of this loot will be remnants of the mutated organic matter. And it can be used to craft healing items.</p><figure><img alt="" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1024/1*B4RL2U0pdxIcXqPHHfHF3g.png" /><figcaption>healing items: Surgical Kit, Power Injector, Pain Killers, various Bandages.</figcaption></figure><p><strong><em>Use EoF Wiki for more info 📖 </em></strong><a href="https://bit.ly/4kMz5V0"><strong><em>https://bit.ly/4kMz5V0</em></strong></a></p><p>There will be several of these items available to craft, each with different properties. Some items will heal you, but reduce your accuracy, others will make you slower. There is even one that will apply a very slow bleeding effect reducing your HP bit by bit until you extract. There won’t be a single health pack that will simply heal you. Every single one will give you a downside forcing you to think a bit more strategically before using them. In addition, we wanted to simulate you actually applying the bandages to yourself thus while you’re actually using the health pack, it’ll take some time, you won’t be able to move.</p><p>Instead of you being able to chug health potions to be virtually invincible, health packs in EoF will force you to stop, evaluate your surroundings and choose the one that works best for that situation. With this, we believe we can still maintain the feeling of the game being harsh and savage while still giving you a lifeline in case you’re low on HP with a bunch of valuable loot.</p><p><strong>Survivor,<br>thanks for reading. next dev log coming soon! I’ll also give you a little peek at what’s coming in the next version — nothing too spoilery, just enough to get you excited.</p><h4>Feature roulette</h4><p>Imagine for a second you’re building a massive online game. How would you plan your feature roadmap?</p><p>The starting point is pretty straightforward — first, you lock in the core game loop. For us, that meant scavenging, shooting, and crafting mechanics. But what do you prioritize after that? That’s where things get tricky, because now you’re making tradeoffs — every new feature you add means pushing something else down the list.</p><p>Some devs argue for boss battles, others push for more weapon variety, or maybe co-op features. Honestly, it’s tough to say what’s “right.” Choosing the next step to give players the best possible experience isn’t easy. Trust me — we’ve had more than a few spirited debates about it in the studio.</p><h4>M̶a̶k̶i̶n̶g̶ Developing informed decisions</h4><p>So how do we make these decisions? Well, the first thing we do is observe — and that’s where our test events (or ACTs, as we call them at EOF) come in handy.</p><p>You’ve probably noticed that each testing event comes with incentives for streaming. There’s a good reason for that — as developers, we’re focused on player engagement and understanding the emotional journey people go through while playing the game.</p><p>What better way to explore that than through your streams? There really is nothing like it.</p><h4><strong>Streams Don’t Lie</strong></h4><p>What are we actually looking out for in streams? We’ve got a whole system for analyzing them. Of course, we start with the basics — things like bugs, weird encounters, or whether players are dying too often. (Fun fact: if you’re streaming <em>Engines of Fury</em>, there’s a good chance someone on our team is literally counting how many times you die).</p><p>But that’s not really the focus. The real value lies in player <em>emotion</em>. We always pay close attention to which moments spark frustration and which ones create joy. Did that boss fight feel satisfying — or was the player just relieved that it was finally over?</p><p>This is where the real magic happens in our design process.</p><p>Negative experiences are usually pretty obvious. If something frustrates a large number of players, we take that seriously. It doesn’t always mean we scrap a mechanic entirely, but we definitely go back and rethink it. Sometimes it takes time, but rest assured — if something in <em>Engines of Fury</em> feels off, chances are we’re already working on it.</p><p>When it comes to positive experiences we double down! If we see players enjoying the thrill of hunting each other, we’ll add features like footprints to support it. If finding epic loot gets people hyped, we’ll look for ways to make those moments happen more often. You get the idea — find what’s fun, and amplify it.</p><h4>So what’s on the Infection feature Roulette Wheel?</h4><p>What features are being added for The Infection?<br>We’ll I’m not revealing all of them yet, but I can give you a few hints on what we noticed was either fun or frustrating to our players during the Cliffside playtest:</p><ul><li>People seemed to have a blast whenever they met someone friendly while raiding.</li><li>Having no means of restoring your HP was rather painful for a lot of folks.</li><li>Ambushing hostile players was kinda fun for a lot of you. Getting ambushed — not so much.</li><li>Finding someone else’s free loot — amazing!</li></ul><p>Now what did we do with all of this information I’ll leave this for the next time. For now, you can take guesses at the new features we’ll be adding to our next closed test — The Infection. As our community grows, so does our commitment to refining the experience, balancing difficulty, and making sure the game remains engaging for both newcomers and veterans.</p><figure><img alt="" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1024/1*2YSAGY1-JadeVmCV9JPiJg.png" /></figure><h3>Building a True Survival Challenge</h3><p>From the very start, we envisioned <em>Engines of Fury</em> as a game that’s tough — where every fight, every scavenged item, and every level gained feels like an achievement. Survival in a post-apocalyptic wasteland isn’t supposed to be easy, and we’ve always aimed to create an experience that demands strategy, skill, and perseverance. But finding the right balance between challenge and frustration has been one of our biggest design hurdles.</p><h3>Lessons from The Antigen</h3><p>Looking back at our first major closed test, <em>The Antigen</em>, we were prepared for chaos. Our networking was untested, our weapons were still being tweaked, and PvP balance was in flux. We feared the game might be too hard — but what we didn’t anticipate was just how quickly some of you would master it. Instead of struggling, many players started farming bosses at an incredible pace, turning what we thought was a grueling challenge into an efficient loot run.</p><p>This was a huge wake-up call. Difficulty isn’t just about making enemies stronger — it’s about pacing, progression, and ensuring that every encounter feels rewarding. This lesson became central to our approach for Cliffside.</p><h3>Evolving with Cliffside</h3><p>With Cliffside, we took a two-pronged approach:</p><ul><li><strong>New players</strong> would have a chance to gear up and explore without being overwhelmed too soon.</li><li><strong>Veteran players</strong> would face tougher enemies, more lethal bosses, and greater rewards for pushing their limits.</li></ul><p>Striking this balance was no small feat, but seeing the way the community engaged with the new mechanics, progression systems, and challenges has been incredibly rewarding.</p><h3>What’s Next?</h3><p>The success of Cliffside has fueled our excitement for what’s coming next. We’re gearing up for the <strong>Infection event</strong>, a fresh set of challenges that will introduce new gameplay mechanics. Additionally, we’re preparing for the <strong>economy release</strong>, which will bring even more depth to progression and asset ownership. It houses three main rooms, each equipped with functional modules <em>(special machine stations)</em>. Initially, the stash has limited space, but it can be expanded through upgrades to hold more.<br>✨ <strong>Skill module.</strong> This module empowers players to improve &amp; customize their character with new abilities.<br><strong>🏪 Terminal. </strong>A hub for trading, where players can buy or sell items with other players, NPCs, or the EoF marketplace.<br><strong>⚙️ Generator. </strong>Powers all crafting, upgrading, &amp; recycling activities.
