In the world of small businesses, where competition is fierce and first impressions matter, your brand identity is your ambassador. I know this firsthand, having dedicated the last 5 years of my career to working closely with startups and small businesses, helping them shape their brand identities from scratch. I’ve witnessed the transformative power of a well-designed brand identity.

The Power of Brand Identity

Brand identity is more than just a logo and a set of colors; it’s the soul of your business. It encapsulates your mission, values, and vision, translating them into visual elements that resonate with your audience. This identity is your first and lasting impression, making it one of the most crucial aspects of your business.

The Role of Brand Strategists and Designers

Enter brand strategists and designers, the architects of this impression. They are the experts who bridge the gap between your vision and its visual representation. Their role goes beyond creating pretty designs; they craft an identity that speaks to your target audience, conveys your uniqueness, and establishes a memorable presence.

A Real-Life Example: The Real Estate Brand

Let’s delve into a real-life example to understand this process better. A while ago, I worked with a PropTech Startup eager to create the perfect brand identity. The client had a vision, an idea of what their logo should look like, and colors they believed represented their brand. But, as often happens, these ideas didn’t necessarily align with the brand’s essence or the market’s expectations.

- The Journey of Convincing and Collaborating

Working on this project was a journey of convincing and collaborating. The initial logo design presented by the client had elements that seemed generic and lacked the uniqueness that the brand needed to stand out in the competitive real estate landscape. This is where my experience came into play.

- Understanding the Client’s Vision

First, I took the time to understand the client’s vision through a comprehensive briefing process by utilizing a tool known as the Creative Brief form. This document allowed us to delve deep into the client’s mind. What was the story they wanted to tell? What emotions did they want their brand to evoke? This step is crucial because it aligns the design process with the brand’s core values.

The Creative Brief form served as a structured approach to gathering essential information. It prompted us to explore various aspects, such as the client’s goals, target audience and desired brand personality. It provided a clear roadmap, guiding the design journey and ensuring that every aspect of the brand identity reflected the client’s vision and aspirations.

By closely examining the CB form, we gained a deeper understanding of the client’s expectations and could make informed decisions regarding design elements, including color psychology, logo concepts, and overall branding direction.

Integrating this client-centric approach was instrumental in creating a brand identity that not only resonated with the real estate brand’s values but also effectively communicated its unique story and message.

- Integrating Color Psychology

Incorporating color psychology was the next step. Colors evoke specific emotions and associations. Color psychology is a vital component of crafting a brand identity that resonates with your audience. Here’s a quick look at how different colors evoke emotions and associations in branding, along with examples of popular brands that use them:

Red: Energetic and attention-grabbing. Think of Coca-Cola and McDonald’s, both using red to stimulate appetite and create urgency.

Blue: Trustworthy and calming. Brands like IBM and PayPal use blue to convey reliability and stability.

Green: Associated with nature and health. Whole Foods and Starbucks use green to represent growth and sustainability.

Yellow: Cheerful and optimistic. McDonald’s employs yellow to radiate positivity and energy.

Purple: Represents luxury and creativity. Cadbury and Yahoo embrace purple to exude sophistication and imagination.

Orange: Energetic and friendly. Brands like Amazon and Fanta incorporate orange to encourage enthusiasm and action.

Understanding the emotional impact of colors can help you select a color palette that aligns perfectly with your brand’s essence and goals. It’s a powerful tool for effective brand communication. For this real estate brand, we selected a warm color palette to convey trust, reliability, and a sense of welcome, all essential qualities in the real estate industry. These colors were carefully chosen to resonate with the audience’s feelings of security and comfort.

- Presenting Alternatives and Justifications

Next, armed with a thorough understanding of the client’s vision from the Creative Brief form, I presented alternative logo concepts and color palettes. Each design choice was accompanied by a well-reasoned justification, incorporating the psychology of colors. For example, the iterative process involved refining the color palette to achieve the perfect balance of warmth and professionalism.

- The Iterative Nature of Branding

The branding process is iterative by nature. It involves several rounds of feedback and revisions, ensuring that the brand identity aligns perfectly with the client’s vision and the market’s expectations. This journey of exploration and refinement is essential to creating a brand identity that truly resonates.

- The Outcome: A Unique and Memorable Brand Identity

After several back-and-forths, the client saw the value in deviating from their initial concept. Together, we crafted a brand identity that not only represented the essence of the real estate brand but also stood out in the market. The final logo and color palette captured the brand’s professionalism, trustworthiness, and commitment to excellence.

- Implementing Your Brand Identity

With the brand identity established, the implementation phase followed. This involved integrating the new brand identity into every aspect of the business, from the website and marketing materials to physical signage and even the interior design of their office. Consistency was key to ensuring that the brand message was clear and resonated with clients at every touchpoint.

The Bigger Picture: Why Originality Matters

This experience underscores the importance of originality in brand identity. Copying another person’s logo or brand identity can lead to legal issues and dilute your brand’s uniqueness. Embrace your brand’s individuality, and let your creativity shine through.

The Power of Rebranding: Embrace Change

Finally, it’s essential to recognize that branding isn’t static. It’s a dynamic process that can evolve with your business. Sometimes, rebranding is necessary to adapt to changing market dynamics or to breathe new life into your brand. Rebranding signals growth and adaptation, helping your brand stay relevant.

If you’re thinking it’s too late to change your brand identity, remember that it’s never too late. The market is ever-changing, and consumer preferences evolve. Your brand can continue to evolve and thrive by embracing change and making strategic adjustments. A well-executed rebrand can breathe fresh vitality into your business, rekindling interest and attracting new audiences while retaining the loyalty of your existing customers.

Rebranding isn’t an admission of failure; rather, it’s a testament to your brand’s willingness to grow and adapt to the evolving landscape. By working with experienced brand strategists and designers, you can embark on a transformative journey that revitalizes your brand and positions it for continued success.

About Me: A Creative Strategist and Lifelong Learner

I’m Olayemi Adesoye, a seasoned Creative Strategist with a passion for innovation and a knack for conjuring vivid imaginations.

As a creative director for an integrated communications agency, I have a firsthand understanding of the complexities of creating effective advertising campaigns. My daily tasks include brainstorming creative ideas, developing strategic messaging, and planning and executing media buys to achieve maximum reach and impact for our clients. However, one of the major obstacles I face is identifying and targeting the right audience for our clients’ ads. This is where AI-powered analytics and insights technology can be a game-changer.

Having worked as a media buyer, I understand how crucial it is to have accurate audience data when creating successful advertising campaigns. Without this data, it’s challenging to create targeted campaigns that resonate with your target audience. Traditionally, marketers have relied on demographic data such as age, gender, and location to segment their target audience. However, with an overwhelming amount of customer data available, it can be challenging to sort through and analyze all the information to create effective audience segments. This is where advanced analytics and insights technology powered by AI can be instrumental. By leveraging AI, marketers can make sense of complex data and gain deeper insights into their target audience, enabling them to develop more effective advertising campaigns.

During a recent advertising campaign for a gadget store, my team and I relied on traditional analytics methods to gain insights into our target audience’s preferences and behavior. We conducted a survey and used focus groups to understand our customers’ buying habits, but we soon realized that these methods had limitations. The survey results were limited in scope, and the focus group discussions were time-consuming and expensive. In addition, there was a risk of response bias, as participants may not always provide accurate or honest responses. These issues made it difficult to gain a comprehensive and accurate understanding of our target audience’s preferences and behavior, limiting the effectiveness of our marketing campaign. If AI-powered analytics and insights technology had been available to us, we could have leveraged it to analyze vast amounts of customer data from multiple sources, including online behavior, social media, and purchase history. This would have provided us with a more accurate and in-depth understanding of our target audience’s preferences and behavior, enabling us to develop a more targeted and effective marketing campaign.

I’ve always been passionate about audience segmentation as a media buyer, and I believe that AI-powered tools have the potential to take it to the next level. Seeing how these tools can analyze vast amounts of data to create more precise and targeted audience segments is truly inspiring. AI-powered audience segmentation can allow marketers to access real-time data and insights, which can help to solve the problem of traditional audience segmentation methods relying on outdated or incomplete data. By scrutinizing large sets of data concerning consumer habits, past buying patterns, and interactions on social media platforms, AI-powered tools can create more accurate and up-to-date audience segments. This can help marketers identify the right platforms and channels to reach their target audience, resulting in more effective ad campaigns and better ROI for businesses. Also, as a creative strategist, I’m constantly exploring the possibilities that arise when we can better understand our target audience and create more effective campaigns. The innovation that AI brings to audience segmentation is revolutionizing the marketing industry, and I’m thrilled to be a part of this exciting evolution.

Creating engaging and relevant content is also very crucial for any successful marketing campaign. In my experience, analyzing customer data to identify popular topics and generate content ideas can be a time-consuming process. The process often involves hours of research, brainstorming, and testing to ensure that the content is not only visually appealing but also informative and relevant. By analyzing customer data, AI content creation tools can suggest topics and generate content ideas that are more likely to resonate with your target audience. It can make the content creation process more efficient and help marketers create more engaging content that stands out in a crowded marketplace. With the help of AI-powered automation, the content creation process can become more efficient and streamlined, freeing up more time for marketers to focus on strategy and other important tasks. Some popular examples of AI-powered content creation tools include Wordsmith, Articoolo, and Copy.ai. With the help of these tools, marketers can create content more quickly and easily than ever before.

Furthermore, I know from experience that optimizing ad placements and bids can be a daunting task. In the conventional Nigerian media environment, it is difficult to accurately track the performance of ads in real-time and make adjustments as needed. This often results in wasted ad spend and lower ROI for clients. One particular campaign I worked on was for a new product launch for a client in the fast-moving consumer goods industry. We had limited information about our target audience and had to rely on traditional media placement strategies to get the message out. We placed ads in popular radio and TV channels, hoping to reach our audience. However, we had no way of measuring the success of our placements, and we couldn’t adjust our bids or ad placements in real time. If we had access to AI-powered ad optimization tools, we could have analyzed customer data and ad performance data in real-time to adjust our placements and bids for maximum impact. With this technology, we could have improved our ROI and ad performance significantly. This kind of automation could have saved me countless hours of manual optimization and allowed me to focus on other important tasks, like identifying new opportunities for my clients

As the world becomes increasingly digitized, AI has emerged as a powerful tool that can help businesses of all sizes streamline their operations, optimize their workflows, and make more data-driven decisions. From finance to healthcare to data analytics and beyond, AI is making amazing reforms and transforming the way we work. I am eagerly anticipating how AI-powered marketing solutions, including analytics and insights, will be further developed to cater to the conventional Nigerian Media Environment, where Traditional Media still holds a significant position.

By leveraging AI-powered marketing solutions and analytics, we have the potential to revolutionize the way we approach advertising and marketing. By using these tools, we can optimize ad placements and bids, create engaging content, and improve audience segmentation. With these capabilities, we can create more effective ad campaigns that reach the right audiences at the right time. The future of marketing is exciting, and I can’t wait to see the innovative solutions that AI-powered technology will bring to the industry. The idea of contributing to this progress excites me, and I am optimistic that AI will pave the way for a new era in marketing and advertising.

The traditional notion that one’s university degree strictly dictates their career path has become outdated. The world has become more dynamic, and career paths have become more diversified than ever before. Nowadays, many people are venturing into careers that are far different from what they studied at University, and it has become quite common. For instance, it is not unusual to find Microbiology or other sciences graduates working in Banks or Lawyers becoming successful Entrepreneurs in Nigeria. Thus, the question arises, does your education matter when it comes to making career choices?

As a child, my aspirations were to become a lawyer. I was influenced by the career posters that adorned the walls of my nursery school classrooms, which only showcased Lawyers, Doctors, Engineers, and Teachers as reputable professions. I vividly remember singing the famous “Standard Living” song which urged us to aspire to be successful lawyers, doctors, and bankers, as they were the occupations that could make you a household name in the corporate world. However, as I progressed through secondary school, my love for Literature-in-English started to blossom, particularly in my senior classes, I started making inquiries about getting a degree in Classical Literature.

Despite this, my parents and close relatives held steadfast to their desire for me to become a lawyer, making it challenging for me to consider studying any other course. Fate would have it that when it was time to select a course at the university, I was not accepted for Law, which was a turning point in my life. Instead, I was offered a place in Linguistics, which I eventually studied and earned a degree in. This experience opened my eyes to the fact that making career choices is not always straightforward, and there are several factors beyond our control that can influence the path we ultimately take.

Choosing a career can be daunting, especially when considering the role of education in career development. The question of whether education is essential to career success is a complex one. In Nigerian universities, many courses taught are outdated and have little to no advantage in the modern labor market. As someone who holds a Linguistics Degree, I have often wondered if my education was truly worth it.

Linguistics is the study of language and its structure, including phonetics, syntax, and semantics. While it may not have direct applications in certain careers, such as brand strategy which is my core skill, I have found that my Linguistics Degree still provided me with valuable skills and knowledge that have been useful in my career. For instance, it helped me become a Radio Presenter for a year, which eventually propelled me to my current job. My Linguistics Degree provided me with skills in communication and public speaking that have been invaluable.

However, it is important to note that while some courses may be outdated, there are still many important courses that provide valuable skills and knowledge. Courses like Medicine and Surgery, Food and Nutrition, and STEM courses are just a few examples of courses that are still relevant and important to study. These courses have direct applications in people’s lives and are essential to society’s functioning.

While it is true that education provides a strong foundation for one’s career, it is not the only factor that determines one’s success in the workplace. The job market has become more competitive, and employers are looking for candidates who have a diverse range of skills and experience.

Furthermore, one’s education alone may not be sufficient to secure a job or succeed in a chosen career. For instance, if you are a Computer Science graduate and want to pursue a career in Digital Marketing, you will need to have skills in areas such as social media marketing, SEO, content creation, and so on. These skills may not have been taught in your degree program, but you can acquire them through internships, volunteer work, or online courses.

Another factor to consider is the changing nature of work. With advances in technology, automation, and artificial intelligence, some jobs may become obsolete, while new ones may emerge.

When making career choices, it is important to consider the practical applications of your chosen course of study. It is essential to study courses that are relevant and provide valuable skills and knowledge. However, it is also important to recognize that the job market is constantly evolving, and what may be relevant today may not be relevant tomorrow. As such, it is important to be flexible and adaptable in one’s career choices. One may need to constantly upskill, reskill, or even switch careers to stay relevant and competitive.

The Linguistic Oddities of English: A Shallow Dive into its Pronunciation, Orthography, and Meaning”.

As a graduate of linguistics, I have come to appreciate the fascinating yet intricate nature of the English language, which deviates from many of the general rules governing other languages. I first gained a full understanding of just how complex the language can be during my second year at Obafemi Awolowo University while studying Introduction to Phonology. This course challenged me in ways I had not anticipated, as I struggled with English words that did not follow the ordered rules and laws that are typical of most other languages. I was often frustrated by the seeming randomness of English pronunciation, orthography, and meaning. Nonetheless, this experience only served to deepen my fascination with the English language and its unique characteristics.

The concept of stress and accentuation is a key feature of English pronunciation that can be difficult for non-native speakers to master. As a linguist, I have learned that stress is usually placed on the first syllable of words in English, but there are exceptions to this rule. Words such as “adequate” and “police” have stress on the second syllable, which can be confusing for non-native speakers. However, this irregularity can be explained by the fact that English has borrowed words from other languages, and these words often retain their original stress pattern.

In addition to pronunciation, English’s orthography can also seem bizarre, with spellings that don’t follow the usual rules. I have learned that the study of etymology helps to explain some of the oddities in English spelling. English has borrowed words from many different languages, including Latin, French, and German, and these words often retain their original spelling even if they don’t conform to English spelling rules. For example, the word “colonel” comes from the French word “colonnel,” which is why it is spelled with an “o” but pronounced as “kern-ul.”

Finally, polysemy is a linguistic theory that helps explain why English can be weird in terms of meaning. English words often have multiple meanings, which can be difficult for non-native speakers to understand. As a linguistics student, I have learned that the word “nice” can mean pleasant, kind, or even precise, depending on the context. Polysemy can be explained by the fact that English has borrowed words from many different languages, and these words often have different meanings in their original languages.

Despite its quirks, English remains one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and its influence continues to grow, making it a fascinating language to study and explore.

As an education enthusiast, I have been fascinated by the rise of educational technology (EdTech) solutions in developing African countries. These innovative solutions are changing the landscape of education by providing unprecedented access to high-quality educational resources and improving the quality of instruction.

One personal experience that stands out is with a mobile learning platform called uLesson. uLesson is a digital learning platform that offers affordable, high-quality educational content for secondary school students in Nigeria. I was first introduced to uLesson while volunteering with a non-profit organization that provides educational resources to underserved communities in Oyo State. The organization partnered with uLesson to provide access to the platform to students who could not afford traditional textbooks or private tutoring.

Through uLesson, students had access to thousands of video lessons, practice questions, and past exam papers that covered a range of subjects such as mathematics, English, and science. The platform also used adaptive learning technology to tailor content to individual students’ needs and track their progress over time.

What struck me about uLesson was how engaging and interactive the content was, making it more accessible and enjoyable for students who may have struggled with traditional teaching methods. Additionally, the platform’s affordability made it accessible to students from all backgrounds, regardless of socioeconomic status.

Another EdTech solution that has made a significant impact in Africa is the e-learning platform, M-Shule. This platform offers personalized learning experiences to students in Kenya through a combination of artificial intelligence and human teachers. By analyzing student performance data, M-Shule can provide tailored content and feedback to individual students, helping them to achieve better academic outcomes.

Furthermore, the digital library, Worldreader, provides access to over 43,000 e-books to students in 47 countries across Africa. Through partnerships with local publishers and organizations, Worldreader is helping to improve literacy rates and access to educational materials in areas where traditional infrastructure is lacking.

EdTech solutions are not only improving access to education but also helping to bridge the skills gap between the education system and the job market. For example, Andela, a software development company with offices in Nigeria, Uganda, and Kenya, provides intensive training to African software engineers and connects them with job opportunities at top tech companies worldwide.

While the potential of EdTech solutions is immense, there are also challenges that need to be addressed. One of the most significant challenges is the lack of access to technology and internet connectivity in many African countries, particularly in rural and remote areas. To overcome this, organizations like BRCK are creating rugged, portable, and affordable Wi-Fi hotspots to provide internet connectivity in areas without reliable infrastructure.

To conclude this article, my experience with uLesson is just one example of how EdTech solutions are changing the landscape of education in Africa. By providing access to high-quality educational resources at an affordable price, these solutions can help to improve academic outcomes, bridge the skills gap, and promote economic growth and development. As we continue to explore the potential of these solutions, it is crucial to ensure that they are accessible, equitable, and relevant to all students. With the right investments, partnerships, and policies, EdTech can help to unlock the full potential of Africa’s young people and drive progress in the region.

Emergence of Artificial Intelligence Bots and it’s impact on the Marketing Industry in Nigeria.

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) bots has been on the rise in recent years, with more and more companies incorporating these tools into their marketing strategies. Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and ChatGPT are just a few examples of AI bots that are changing the way marketing professionals approach their jobs. These bots are designed to automate repetitive tasks, analyze data, and provide personalized customer experiences, and as a result, they are helping companies increase efficiency and improve customer satisfaction.

Google Workspace, for instance, is a suite of productivity tools that includes Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides. With the integration of AI bots, Google Workspace can now provide intelligent suggestions for completing tasks, such as recommending email responses and automating document formatting. This can save marketing professionals time and streamline their workflow, allowing them to focus on more high-value tasks.

Similarly, Microsoft 365 is a collection of cloud-based applications that includes Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Microsoft has also integrated AI bots into its software, such as the Microsoft Editor, which provides intelligent suggestions for writing and editing content. These AI bots can help marketing professionals improve the quality of their work and increase their productivity.

ChatGPT is another example of an AI bot that is transforming the marketing industry. As a language model trained by OpenAI, ChatGPT can understand and respond to natural language queries from users. This makes it an ideal tool for customer service, lead generation, and other marketing functions. For instance, a customer can ask a question about a product, and ChatGPT can provide a helpful response in real-time, improving customer satisfaction and reducing the workload on marketing professionals.

One of the key benefits of AI bots is that they can automate repetitive tasks, freeing up time for marketing professionals to focus on more strategic initiatives. For example, instead of manually responding to every customer inquiry, an AI bot can handle many of these requests automatically. This not only saves time but also improves the customer experience by providing fast and accurate responses.

However, the rise of AI bots also raises concerns about job loss in the marketing industry amongst others. As bots become more sophisticated, they may be able to replace human workers in some roles. This could lead to significant job losses, especially in areas like customer service and lead generation.

In Nigeria, the reception to AI bots is mixed. While many businesses recognize the benefits of this technology, the concerns about job loss and the impact on the economy is a key factor. To address these concerns, it will be important for businesses and policymakers to work together to ensure that the benefits of AI bots are shared fairly across society. This could include investing in education and training programs to help workers develop the skills needed to work alongside AI bots, as well as developing policies that ensure that the benefits of increased automation are shared more equitably.

In conclusion, the emergence of AI bots is transforming the marketing industry, and marketing professionals need to stay ahead of the curve to remain relevant. Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and ChatGPT are just a few examples of how AI bots are being used to automate customer service, lead generation, and other marketing functions. While there are concerns about job loss, the benefits of this technology are undeniable, and businesses that adopt AI bots are likely to gain a competitive advantage in the years to come. As AI technology continues to evolve, it is likely that the use of AI bots will become more widespread in Nigeria and other countries around the world, bringing both challenges and opportunities to the marketing industry.
