Manafeth specializes in offering business consulting services and technical solutions, particularly in data management and traceability data sharing. They also serve as the regional representative of Atrify, the largest GDSN master data pool worldwide.

With a decade of experience in business consulting, data management, and traceability solutions within the food sector, Manafeth is well-equipped to implement blockchain-based traceability solutions in Jordan. Leveraging TE-FOOD’s extensive experience across various countries, Manafeth aims to apply this expertise to potential food traceability projects in the Middle East. Both companies share GS1 partnerships, which greatly simplifies data compatibility.

In Jordan, the agricultural sector employs 15% of the workforce, focusing on horticultural products, poultry, and small-scale herding. The country has witnessed significant growth in the export of beverages, dairy products (including cheese and condensed milk), and vegetables (especially tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and more). Additionally, live animals (primarily sheep) and fruits like peaches, apricots, and citrus have seen substantial growth in exports.

Jordan, being a net food-importing nation, recognizes the increasing importance of product traceability. This need arises from its reliance on importing lightly processed food products that its domestic agriculture sector cannot competitively produce in sufficient quantities, including beef, sugar, processed cereals, and various oils like sunflower and palm oil.

TE-FOOD and Manafeth form a formidable partnership, combining robust technological expertise, international implementation experience, and deep local knowledge within the food industry. This collaboration is poised to make significant strides in enhancing traceability and transparency in the Jordanian food sector.

TE-FOOD is the world’s largest publicly accessible, farm-to-table food traceability solution. Started in 2016, it serves 6000+ business customers, and handles 400,000 business transactions each day.

Website: www.te-food.com

TE-FOOD partners with Manafeth Middle East Consulting & Technology was originally published in TE-FOOD on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Soon, traceability-washing will become a new trend — how can we avoid it?

As more people support environmentally friendly processes in the food production, a growing number of companies commit to green methodologies. But, at the same time, several of them just intend to gain the marketing benefits, without actually implementing these methodologies.

Greenwashing

Many people are already aware of the term “greenwashing”, which refers to

a communication by a company presenting themselves as eco-champions, while in reality their sustainability claims are exaggerated, false, or deceptive.

Their goal is to improve their brand image in the eyes of consumers, without really doing anything.

There were several greenwashing examples by companies, when they advertised themselves as sustainable and eco-friendly, while maintaining, or even increasing the pollution they cause with their production.

Akepa, a digital agency for sustainable brands goes further: they claim that within the fashion industry, nearly 60% of sustainability claims is greenwashing.

Source: Akepa

Traceability-washing on the rise

Many surveys and reports claim that implementing traceability has the same effect on consumers, as sustainability claims do: they trust traceable products better, and — on longer term — the associated brand’s recognition will grow.

Therefore it’s probable, that faking the existence or scope of traceability will become popular amongst food companies.

Marketing departments will try to fill their reports and announcements with bold statements about their commitment to transparency and traceability, they will emphasize the importance of operational visibility, while in reality, their efforts will not live up to their claims.

There were already a couple cases in the past. A U.S. based food producer announced a turkey traceability program, while the only information they provided was the name of the farm the turkey came from. A large coffee producer’s traceability program was even worse. When consumers scanned the traceability QR code, the well designed landing page provided only general information about the company’s suppliers, supply chain processes, and their commitment towards transparency.

How to characterize traceability

Certainly it’s difficult for a consumer to investigate, if a food producer’s traceability claims are valid or not. The company might decide not to publish the collected traceability information at all, they just use it for internal processes. Or, it might be that they implement traceability for a few marginal products, while using it in for general brand advertisement.

To make it even more difficult, it’s hard to define what amount of information, what depth, and what precision should count as “traceability implementation”. The main characteristics to describe traceability are

Product scope — refers to how many products, what percentage of all products of a company are traceable.

Precision — refers to the tracked units in the different supply chain steps, such as LOTs, batches, package, crate, pallet, transportation container. Usually, batch level traceability is adequate.

Data granularity — refers to the number of data points collected refarding a tracked item (e.g. a batch).

Depth — refers to how many different roles in the supply chain participate in the data collection (primary producer, processor, shipper, wholesaler, retailer).

These five characteristics could describe the level of traceability implemented by a supply chain.

The SPGD index

If we could set metrics for each characteristics, an index could be built from them, to make traceability measurable, without analyzing each supply chain.

Maybe, there could be other, complementary characteristics as well, like the utilization of standards (G.A.P., GDST, EPCIS, etc.), or the method of data collection (manual, automatic via IOT devices).

By properly setting the metrics of each characteristics, a global index could be built to help retailers and consumers in their decision making. Such index could properly handle traceability washing, and further strenghten the trust in the food industry.

TE-FOOD is the world’s largest publicly accessible, farm-to-table food traceability solution. Started in 2016, it serves 6000+ business customers, and handles 400,000 business transactions each day.

Website: www.te-food.com

Soon, traceability-washing will become a new trend — how can we avoid it? was originally published in TE-FOOD on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

“Where does your fish come from? Did its production contribute to the destruction of ecosystems? Was it caught illegally, or by slaves? Very often, it is hard to know.”

This is, how Planet Tracker, a non-profit financial think tank begins its “How to Trace $600 billion” report. These are very important questions asked by more and more consumers, which increases the desire of retailers as well to know more about the origin and the supply chain processes of the seafood products.

The report estimates, that the global seafood supply chain (all companies) generated a revenue of USD 1.8 trillion in 2020. Implementing traceability could provide several benefits like

increased sales volume (buying traceable fish decreases the risk of illegally harvested, or bad quality products for the producers/retailers)

increased price (according to surveys, consumers are willing to pay premium price for traceability information attached to the retail product)

reduced direct costs of food recalls (several pilots had shown that traceability programs can decrease the cost of recalls by 60–90%)

reduced staff costs (an integrated end-to-end solution removes the necessity to collect the same information at each supply chain company).

As they calculate, the increase in valuations of global seafood supply chain corporates could reach USD 600 billion, if the fishing industry would invest 1% of seafood sales value in traceability.

Then why isn’t it possible to trace back every fish to a farm or fishing vessel, yet?

Here comes an important metrics: according to the report,

only 29% of the current global seafood production is traceability ready in volume terms.

The term, “traceability ready” means that the fish is

a) harvested in a way that makes it acceptable for the harvester to be associated with its production (i.e. it is not too unsustainable or illegal), and

b) caught or farmed in an area where the challenges of implementing a traceability solution (levels of corruption and digitalisation) can be overcome.

And 71% of the global seafood production doesn’t fit in this “traceability ready” category.

Actually, according to the World Benchmarking Alliance’s Seafood Stewardship Index, the analysis of the largest 30 seafood companies shows, that none of the companies in the benchmark provided detailed explanations or evidence of implemented traceability systems that cover 100% of a company’s seafood portfolio as of 2020.

So what does the report suggest to overcome this challenge?

The report suggests two ways to improve the situation:

The financial backers of all of these companies need to improve the situation by introducing traceability-linked loans, which in practice, means companies would make time-bound commitments to achieve a certain level of traceability by a certain date. There could be proper KPIs set to measure if the companies fulfilled their commitments. In case a company achieved their target, the interest of the load could be reduced to make it compelling.
This action would both to reduce the financial backer’s risk and to improve the fishing industry’s performance.

The other possibility is that traceability-related regulation tightening has the potential to improve the situation, by adding more and more details to the required data points which needs to be collected throughout the supply chain.

Our thoughts

Blockchain based, end-to-end traceability could provide several benefits for the fishing industry. Blockchain, as an immutable, decentralized technology to store and exchange critical tracking events data, a wide range of tools to collect the data throughout the supply chain, a logical structure of identification according to international standards are all components of a solution provided by TE-FOOD.

Read the whole report here:
https://planet-tracker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/How-to-Trace-USD600-billion.pdf

TE-FOOD is the world’s largest publicly accessible, farm-to-table food traceability solution.

From time to time, we would like to inform our followers about the projects we are working on. While news announcements depend on several factors, we are still working continuously.

Integrating IOT devices in the traceability process

We believe that the next wave of adoption in traceability will require integrated and automated data collection from the farms to the processor. Smart machines, RF gates, beacons will provide information automatically, which will enable traceability solutions to provide lower operational expenses, enhanced trust in the data, and deeper understanding of the processes in the supply chain.

This is why we started cooperating with leading IOT brands like Honeywell and Bizerba. Their understanding of the customer needs, and positions on the market is an exceptional advantage to provide an enterprise grade solution in any country of the world. We expect that during the next 4–5 years, we will see several steps towards this direction on the market, and TE-FOOD will be well prepared to serve customers of any size.

Governmental traceability in Vietnam

Thanks to the efforts of Trung and his local team, there are several new development directions for the livestock management and traceability program.

As it is a governmental solution, compliance with various governmental institutions (e.g. Statistical Office) is an important requirement. We are working on adjustments to comply with the regulation changes.

We also made significant refactoring in the custom features of the applications used in Vietnam. Due to historical reasons, we had the traceability solution, the livestock management solution, and a third, hybrid solution for provices. Now, due to the changing needs, we are working on to bring these separate codebases into one solution with parameterizable feature sets, where a customer can potentially log in once, and access the features of all (currently) three solutions. This is a long-term development, where we integrate these solutions step by step.

Marketplace module

We also investigate new functional directions, which can bring new customers to the traceability program in Vietnam, or increase the engagement of our existing customer base.

Recently we launched a prototype of a marketplace module, which enables making direct trade deals between farmers and market agents. The purpose is to ease the way smallholder farmers and agents (working for wholesalers or retailers) can match according to their offers and needs. We are presenting the feature to many supply chain stakeholders to see how much added value they see in this possibility. We are also preparing pilot projects to find how we can improve the functionality of the marketplace module. The marketplace is not a standalone application, it provides access to those companies which are customers of TE-FOOD’s traceability and livestock management system in Vietnam.

Pilots are in preparation in other Vietnamese provinces

We are also working on small-scale pilots for traceability and livestock management in other Vietnamese provinces. We see the interest to improve control and to get insights, but we have to be aware that governmental projects develop slowly. Technical development is only a part of such projects. Alterations need to be made in the regulations, governmental proceses, compliance need to be built towards various regulations, government employees need to be trained to use and promote the system.

Blockchain based multi-partner loyalty rewards solution

Recently we published our intention to develop a loyalty rewards solution based on blockchain and tokenization. We have completed the planning phase of the feature set, and in the current phase, we are looking for partners which are interested in a pilot, so we can cooperate to work together on the solution.

Auchan continues the expansion

Auchan continues to integrate new products to its traceability system. The integration requires coordination with all the suppliers to collect and transmit data to the TrustChain, which makes the process slower, but our colleagues are supporting Auchan’s suppliers continuously.

Migros regularly deepens the functionality

The traceability system of Migros had been regularly extended during the last years with new functionalities to deepen the data collection of suppliers.

TE-FOOD Lite

Although during the last years, the Coronavirus pandemic made it very difficult to implement new solutions, we see a lot of future potential in an easy-to-implement, entry level traceability SaaS solution, like TE-FOOD Lite.

We are still partly refactoring the codebase to enable quicker implementations in the future. The less human resources the implementation requires, the more affordable the solution can be. This requires traceability solution providers to implement tools which make the data collection easier and quicker for the companies.

Until now, companies collected data points manually, by typing in the information directly to the traceability system, or to a connected legacy system.

As the competition in the retail industry becomes fiercer with the growing options to shop, the emphasis will grow on customer loyalty and engagement.

Challenges of loyalty systems

Individual loyalty solutions for each retailer has strong disadvantages. Most customers don’t want several loyalty accounts, cards, and apps at each retailer, they prefer multi-provider solutions, where their rewards are collected in one central wallet, and they can use them anywhere amongst the participating retailers.

So, when customers go to a grocery store, they are credited with loyalty points based on their purchase value, and then they can go to a bookstore, and spend those points to lower the costs.

But this brings the biggest challenge of these multi-partner loyalty programs: it requires a complex multilateral clearing system to manage which retailers (where the points were credited) owe money to other retailers (where the points were debited).

Introducing blockchain as a customer loyalty solution

This is where blockchain based crypto tokens come in. Each participating retailer issues crypto tokens as loyalty points, and the solution manages the wallets for the retailers and consumers as well. When a customer wants to spend loyalty points in a cosmetic shop, which were collected at a supermarket, the system swaps the tokens in the background, and each retailer make the settlement with their own tokens.

This crypto token based setup brings another advantage to the loyalty program: Participants don’t need to contract each other in a multilateral structure, they just need one, bilateral contract with TE-FOOD, as the solution provider. This makes the legal part of such program much easier.

But the token based structure can even go further. It could give the possibility for customers to “cash out” a part of the points they collected with their regular purchases. By swapping their loyalty tokens to TONE, an established crypto token, it enables them to purchase ETH or BTC as well on exchanges.

The whole system can be managed by smart contracts to control the credit/debit transactions, as well as the swaps between tokens. All transactions get stored on the TrustChain, and expands the utility of the TONE token.

The crypto token based setup enables retailers, travel and leisure providers, fitness or healthcare services to join, additionally it can cover any direct to consumer service providers under one umbrella solution. Obviously, as such system grows, so grows the marketing potential for new joiners to have access to a large number of potential customers.

We have many years of experience

Such loyalty solutions are not new for TE-FOOD. Another company of the founders of TE-FOOD has been developing and maintaining the largest multi-partner customer loyalty rewards solution in Hungary, called SuperShop.
https://medium.com/media/ea6a8550f7b54e7522b8c99a414325e5/href
SuperShop, founded in 2000, has 3,5 million card holders, and performs 1,2 million card transactions per day, and the loyalty card is accepted on more than 800 points of sale.

Many years of experience in the IT side of such loyalty system helps TE-FOOD to develop an improved, blockchain based solution for international use.

This development has been added to TE-FOOD’s 2022–23 development roadmap. We plan to start the solution in Southeast Asia, where the retail spending growth is bigger, while there are yet fewer loyalty programs.

We believe this solution can be synergistic with TE-FOOD’s traceability solution as well, and can catalyze the blockchain transactions on the TrustChain, while expanding the utility of its underlying token, TONE.

TE-FOOD is the world’s largest publicly accessible, farm-to-table food traceability solution. It tracks and traces products from the primary producer to the retail shelves in multiple countries, for goverments, retailers, and food producers.

TE-FOOD and Honeywell partnered in Vietnam to work out a set of hardware and software tools to make it easier to onboard supply chain companies.

Traceability projects are much more complex than providing a blockchain based platform to load data for decentralized verification and storage. Physical identifiers need to be applied on the products on multiple levels (item, box, pallet, container, etc.), the system needs to be inclusive to allow various methods of data capture, the collected data about critical tracking events needs to be cleaned, synchronized and processed, and the retail products need to have machine readable identifiers (usually in the form of 2D barcodes) to enable consumers to scan them in order to access verified traceability data.

Most of the traceability service providers just focus on some elements, but this leaves food companies in a situation, where they need to contact various vendors for different components of the project, when they don’t necessarily have the technical knowledge to make proper decisions.

The partners’ goal is to make these decisions easier for the food companies by offering the necessary hardware and software tools from just one vendor, ensuring that the elements are compatible, and the outcome is what the customer envisioned.

TE-FOOD is the world’s largest publicly accessible, farm-to-table food traceability solution. Collecting three years of experience, we re-thinked our processes to improve the token economics of the TrustChain.

Summary

TONE will be the network fuel for making and validating transactions on the TrustChain. The former token rental model (Iridium nodes) will be discontinued.

The fees of TrustChain are based on operations, not blockchain transactions (one blockchain transaction might contain multiple business operations).

Customers (or implementation partners) need to buy TONE tokens from the open market for the processing and storage of their business operations on the TrustChain.

The cost per operations is fiat based for stability and plannability.

50% of TONE tokens used to send operations to the TrustChain will be rewarded to masternodes for securing the network.

Anybody will be able to start a masternode. There won’t be masternode tiers.

The distribution of operations among masternodes will be based on the number of staked TONE tokens in the masternode (more tokens -> more operations for the masternode).

Only a specific number of masternodes with the most tokens staked will become Active masternodes (which receive operations) for a specific day.

Industry maintained Supernodes continue to be an important part of the TrustChain, but Supernodes are not part of the incentive model.

TONE token

TONE is a pre-mined, non-inflationary token, with a maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. TONE will act as the network fuel for making and validating transactions on the TrustChain blockchain.

TONE is used to

publishing data to the TrustChain

providing Masternodes to validate transactions

using value added services

staking (planned)

Fueling the ecosystem

The TrustChain calculates fees in operations, not in blockchain transactions. An operation is a business transaction (e.g. dispatching a transport), and usually one blockchain transaction contains several operations.

Customers (or implementation partners) need to buy TONE tokens in the open market to fuel their operations on the TrustChain. The token buy transactions will be performed by the customers or the implementation partners, not by TE-FOOD itself.

The only place customers or implementation partners can buy TONE tokens for their transactions is from the open market (TE-FOOD itself can not sell TONE tokens for fiat money).

Operations are based on real life events (e.g. registering a physical asset’s identifier and associated data). On the technical side, an operation may represent a certain amount of data to be registered and stored on the TrustChain.

The cost to register and store data on the TrustChain might depend on the size of the data and the use case (the business logic of an operation).

To guarantee the stable cost of operations to satisfy customers, the fee for publishing business operations data needs to be fiat currency based. The planned average fee of an operation is 0,00025 USD.

Sharing of blockchain revenues

The TONE tokens which were used to fuel operations are allocated to the two pools below:

50% is allocated to the Expiration pool

50% is allocated to the Masternode pool.

The Expiration pool represents expired licence tokens. Tokens in this pool will be regularly sent to a blackhole address.

Update: Please note that this allocation had changed in a later update.

The Masternode pool represents the incentive masternodes which validate the transactions, thus secure the network. TONE tokens in the Masternode pool are distributed quarterly. The TONE in the pool is shared according to each masternode’s share of the validated operations during the previous period.

Masternodes

Masternode tiers

Masternode tiers will be unified into one tier, as the project pivoted from the originally planned separated masternode tier services.

Masternode collateral

There is no minimum collateral (token allocation) set for masternodes.

Masternode application

Anyone will be able to apply for a masternode. You don’t need to have any technical knowledge, as the simple onboarding process enables you to run your masternode in the distributed technical environment of our partner, TriBlock without any cost.

One person will be eligible to operate one masternode.

Active and Backup masternodes

As the number of masternodes which the network needs is limited, only a certain number of the nodes are Active masternodes. A script which runs regularly, collects the number of tokens dedicated to your masternode, and creates a daily ranking. Those masternodes which have the largest number of tokens will be the Active masternodes for the given day. The rest of the masternodes will be Backup masternodes for the given day.

The number of tokens associated to the masternode provides a daily ranking

At the start, each day the first 100 masternodes will be Active masternodes. The number of Active masternodes is planned to change according to the number of operations on the network.

Distribution of operations

Operations in the ecosystem will be distributed for validation amongst the Active masternodes, using a simplified method.

The mechanism distributes the operations according to the share of TONE tokens associated to a masternode, compared to the TONE tokens associated to all masternodes. The more TONE tokens staked in association with a masternode, the more operations the node will validate.

Staking with delegation (future plan)

Our goal is to build a mechanism which enables TONE holders to help securing the network by fortifying a masternode with their tokens. This way, the staked tokens of that masternode grows, it receives more transactions, and the stakers who delegated their tokens will get their share from the masternode rewards of that masternode. The exact mechanisms are still in conceptual phase, and there are still several legal aspects to clarify, so this feature is still a plan for a later phase (probably in 2023).

Structure

TrustChain provides well-balanced participation from the industry and the consumer community.

The TrustChain provides two masternode types:

Supernodes are operated by supply chain companies and organizations. Their motivation is to participate in the network.

Masternodes are operated by members of the consumer community. They are incentivized to operate their masternode.

For eligibility, transactions sent to the TrustChain need to be validated by at least one supernode (besides masternodes). Currently, the TrustChain operates with seven supernodes, operated by various companies actively using the TrustChain.

Technical infrastructure

The technical operation of the Masternodes will continue without any modification.

Iridium nodes

Iridium nodes will be discontinued, as they were integral part of the previous, licence rental based token economics.

Do you have questions? Join our Telegram group to discuss it with our community!

TE-FOOD is the world’s largest publicly accessible, farm-to-table fresh food traceability solution.
