You can very easily open-source something like this by uploading the raw 3D project files to a public repository (eg: GitHub) under a licence like Creative Commons.

Obviously not the way to go if you plan to take the commercial route with the end product (like selling 3D printed landmarks as someone else had suggested in the replies).

Either way, good luck with the project!

It would be nice to have a publicly accessible archive of this, if you're up to it.

Sounds like a fun project. Are you publishing these somewhere?
