The topic of emulation, in the context of the arts and of new digital media, is particularly relevant nowadays in an ongoing AI discourse in flux. All artists, within their unique voices, channel out emulations of their environments but it is painfully reductive to say it's done anything close to how an AI tool generates art.
When generating art with mainstream AI tools, every output is within set parameters decided by whoever built the tools. If software is dictating the musical boundaries of a sound, the artist is then borrowing rules as to how it sounds. If an artist builds their own tools, or configures a tool, they must at least source their own materials for it to be truly original. Except rarely anyone ever does this yet.
The most painful bit is how images, video, and sound, generated by emulating previous artists is done without consent. This is problematic and deeply disturbing to the art world sphere. Misappropriations will be a familiar obstacle in the new climate, it's a cold and stark reality.
This record is a cry against the cold machine that is overtaking our human emulations of the environment.
Creating by hand will never die. I included a live studio recording I made in October '24. I recorded a piece with virtual instruments and field recordings on a 64 key keyboard while scrolling through a chaotic twitter feed with the end result being a collaging of different motions resulting in an 11 minute and 32 second recording.
This album is still unmixed. I'm looking for volunteers interested in mixing + mastering.
