Supun Sanjaya Katugampala is a Sri Lankan scientist and entrepreneur, holding a B.Sc. Special Degree (Honours) in Chemistry from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, awarded in 2014. As part of his undergraduate research, he presented a speech titled “Synthesis, Characterization, and Biological Studies of Novel Copper-Triazine Complexes” at the 41st Annual Conference of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) in New Orleans, USA. His work, supervised by Prof. Theshini Perera, was later published as a full-length research article in Bioinorganic Chemistry and Applications in 2018.
A proud alumnus of D. S. Senanayake College, Supun began his scientific career as a research intern at the Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology (SLINTEC) in 2013. During his time there, he presented an abstract on “Red Rain in Sri Lanka” at the SPIE Astrobiology Conference.
Currently, Supun serves as a Scientific/Research Officer at the National Research Council (NRC) of Sri Lanka, where he is responsible for initiating, managing, and administering Target-Oriented Multidisciplinary Research Grants. Since 2017, he has served as the Chief Organizer of the President’s Awards for Scientific Publications, the NRC’s flagship annual event. He is also a longstanding member of the Department Procurement Committee of the NRC.
His prior roles include serving as an Inorganic Chemist at Bureau Veritas CPS Lanka (Pvt) Ltd and as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
In 2019, Supun founded the Orleans Institute, where he continues to serve as Managing Director, further establishing himself as a committed educator and entrepreneur in Sri Lanka’s academic landscape.
