Beauvoir's notion of authentic love is cumming at the same time.

I think one of the biggest problems with carceral approaches to sexual violence -- which subjects survivors to a grueling process described colloquially as "the second rape" with the goal of warehousing humans in rape factories -- is that it doesn't address rape culture.

The victim blaming this is going to give rise to is making ill. We only like the idea of vengeance when the "right" people get it -- the white husbands and fathers of "credible" victims -- everyone else is going to be accused of bloodlust and further vilified.

Let's not pretend that law & order approaches don't also make survivors caretake for others given the lengths that they have to go through in order to make their trauma legible in court. Not to mention the common refrain "if you don't report for yourself then do it for others".

The argumentative tactics of Carceral feminists are strickingly similar to those of prolife feminists in the ways that they prod at the trauma of vulnerable people while also failing to address the underlying structural problems, which in some cases they intensify.

Feminism has always challenged the line between public and private in order to make experiences of harm legible. Sharing experiences publicly is why we now have concepts like "date rape", "stealthing", and "emotional abuse". Not talking about problems doesn't make them go away.

It’s gross to post your ex’s private texts unless you have a really solid reason to do so—& this holds true even if your ex was a thin-skinned, manipulative weasel. That used to be a given, but it clearly isn’t anymore

If someone wanted to pay me to write a long form article about the relationship between carceral feminism and the pro life movement that could be very cool...

Transphobia has always been rampant in philosophy. But it's frankly horrifying how comfortable people have become airing these views. Much of this confidence is due to the fact they can count on the discipline itself to protect them. There is a bystander issue at play here.

It shouldn't come as a shock that a majority of abuse occurs within the "safety" of the family. Peddling the narrative that it's unknown or suprising undermines and ignores decades of advocacy. It doesn't take DNA to make abuse visible. It takes bothering to listen to survivors.

I have a story in @TheAtlantic today that I have been thinking about for years. I've written a lot about shocking discoveries from 23andMe and AncestryDNA tests, but several years ago, I heard about a support group for what might be the most shocking discovery of all.

This is transphobic drivel but instead of its usual conservative trappings it’s being re-framed as leftist harm reduction. I wonder if the creator anticipated the potential triggering or contagion effects for those that pass by?

I think that if you run a popular philosophy podcast that not only platforms terfs but that also features women in less than 40% of your episodes that you ought not congratulate yourself for the representational gains that women have been making in the field.
