So to recap…
Bus fare cap ⬆️ 50%
Rail fares ⬆️ 4.6%
Rail cards ⬆️ by £5
Fuel duty… still frozen.
Gov talks of delivering on the environment yet undermines itself by failing to adequately tax our most polluting forms of transport & support the most sustainable. #Budget2024

- This is not long-term transport planning; it's short-term expediency. Ripping up 25 yrs of transport policies - many enacted under previous Conservative Governments - in a desperate attempt to win votes is deeply retrograde and will damage communities, the country and the planet.Today we’ve launched our Plan for Drivers – 30 new actions we are taking to help put motorists back in the driving seat. Read the full plan 👉 gov.uk/government/new… #PlanForDrivers
- There was once a much bigger vision for our international rail link, that saw sleeper services from across the UK connect directly with HS1 at London for seamless train travel into Europe. For train to compete with plane, there's challenges to overcome👇
- Cutting Air Passenger Duty on domestic flights in the #Budget is utterly wrong-headed in the shadow of the climate emergency. Most of these journeys can be made in just a few hours by train with just one-seventh the carbon impact. #trainNOTplane
- They've arrived! @Paultuohy on the plane and Norman Baker on the train got to George Square just TWO MINS apart. Paul *just* beat Norman, but his journey emitted around 7x more carbon emissions. With Norman's journey more pleasant too, the case for #trainNOTplane is clear.
00:00 - In 1963, the Beeching Report led to the closure of almost 2,500 stations and a third of Britain's railway lines. In 2023, road traffic is blighting communities and transport emits more greenhouse gases than any other sector. It's time to #ReverseBeeching.
- Thousands of stations and up to 1/3 of Britain's railway lines were closed in the 1960s under the Beeching cuts. We think many of these should be reopened, to connect communities and enable low-carbon travel:
- Fuel duty has been frozen for 14 yrs. 2022 it was cut, costing the Treasury £2.4 billion. @SMFthinktank found the freeze has benefitted the top fifth of earners twice as much as the bottom fifth. Yet rail fares continue to rise; Gov needs to reprioritise & end the freeze.
- Imagine if the England ⚽ team took the 🚆 rather than a ✈ to next year's Euros in Germany - what an amazing boost that would be for green travel! We've written to ask them to do just that, as reported in the media today: dailymail.co.uk/wires/pa/artic… #trainNOTplane
- Get in the bin! How about instead of a phantom meat tax, seven recycling bins and compulsory car-sharing, the Government scraps these rubbish transport policies instead 👇
- Taking the train from London-Norwich takes a little over 90 minutes. The PM's decision to take a private helicopter instead was a terrible one, for the planet and for taxpayers. #TrainNotPlane #TrainNotHelicopter
- Let’s dissect this… £1bn bus investment as part of Network North only equates to what was already promised as part of the National Bus Strategy when HS2 was STILL going to Manchester. Bus funding shouldn’t come from lost rail investment; it should come from the roads budget. We’re using savings from HS2 to improve local bus services👇 🚍 £150m boost for buses in the North and Midlands in 2024/25 🚍 Capping £2 single bus fares across England to 31 Dec 2024 We’re also👇 🚍 Supporting community transport services for older and vulnerable people
00:00 - Private jets are up to 14 times more polluting than commercial flights. We want to see: 🛫 A new tax levied on private jet passengers 🛫 All flights by private jets subject to VAT The money raised should be invested in public transport. bettertransport.org.uk/media/private_…
- Between 1980 and 2016, the cost of bus and coach travel rose by 64% and rail travel by 63%, whilst the cost of motoring dropped 20% - no wonder our roads are clogged and our air is unbreathable!
