Hey there!

I want to talk about something I've been working on this weekend that you may find helpful, especially if you're into WordPress. It's called WP CLI Dev, and my little (another) side project is about to get better, easy-to-navigate WP CLI docs.

If you've ever used WP CLI, you know it's a powerhouse for managing WordPress sites through the command line. It's significantly improved how I manage everything from client projects to my own personal sites. But, as much as I love WP CLI, I hit a snag—finding the info I needed in the official documentation was a bit of a hassle. It's packed with great info, but digging through it to find exactly what you need can be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

That's precisely why WP CLI Dev was born. I envisioned a more accessible, easy-to-navigate companion to the official WP CLI documentation. It's designed to be straightforward, helping us find what we need without the runaround.

WP CLI Dev pulls in the most recent WP CLI Official documentation. But here's the kicker: I'm using the Syntax template from TailwindUI to display the information. In my opinion, it's a highly efficient way to present the commands and documentation. This setup not only makes the content look clean and readable but also makes it super easy to find exactly what you're looking for, whether you're troubleshooting or trying out new commands.

I focused on a few key areas with WP CLI Dev: smarter search features to find commands and solutions instantly and an enhanced design for a better overall experience. It's about reducing the time you spend looking for the right info.

I'm really excited about WP CLI Dev, and I think it can make a difference in how we all use WP CLI, at least for me. I'd love for you to check it out and let me know what you think.

What is Laravel Herd?

In the dynamic landscape of Laravel development, Laravel Herd emerges as a pivotal tool designed to streamline the setup process for developers. This native macOS application, introduced at Laracon US in July 2023, is a collaborative effort between Beyond Code and Laravel LLC. It stands as a comprehensive solution, incorporating PHP, Nginx, and Dnsmasq to facilitate a seamless local development environment. Compared to Laravel Valet, Laravel Herd promises an even more straightforward setup, aiming to be an indispensable asset for developers in the Laravel ecosystem.

How to Install PHP on Your Mac Using Laravel Herd

Embarking on your Laravel Herd installation journey is a straightforward process. Here we delineate the steps to ensure a hassle-free setup:

Step 1: Visit the official website to download Herd.

Step 2: Open the downloaded file.

Step 3: Drag the Laravel Herd application into your /Applications folder, initiating the installation process.

Option: At this juncture, you have the flexibility to set up from scratch or import your existing Laravel Valet configuration, a feature designed to facilitate a smooth transition for Valet users.

Verification: Post installation, it is prudent to verify the setup. Execute commands to check the versions of PHP, Laravel, and Composer, confirming the environment is primed for use.

By following this structured pathway, developers can swiftly set up Laravel Herd, paving the way for an efficient development environment.

What PHP Versions Does Laravel Herd Support?

Laravel Herd extends support for a range of PHP versions, accommodating developments in PHP 7.4 to PHP 8.3. This wide array of compatibility ensures that developers can work with a versatile set of tools and features, enhancing the development process significantly.

Which PHP Extensions are Included?

Herd includes the following extensions:
bcmath, bz2, calendar, ctype, curl, dba, dom, exif, ffi, fileinfo, filter, ftp, gd, gmp, iconv, imagick, intl, mbstring, mysqli, opcache, openssl, pcntl, pdo, pdo_mysql, pdo_pgsql, pdo_sqlite, pgsql, phar, posix, readline, redis, session, shmop, simplexml, soap, sockets, sodium, sqlite3, sysvmsg, sysvsem, sysvshm, tokenizer, xml, xmlreader, xmlwriter, zip and zlib.

Xdebug can be installed manually via PECL and Homebrew.

The Strengths of Laravel Herd Compared to Valet

Laravel Herd stands a notch above Valet, offering an all-encompassing package where everything is bundled together, promising faster and more efficient performance, especially on Apple silicon Mac. This attribute translates to a significant boost in performance, presenting developers with a tool that is not just simple but also optimized for speed.

The Limitations of Laravel Herd Compared to Valet

Despite its strengths, Laravel Herd comes with its set of limitations. It restricts the installation of PHP versions before PHP 7.4 and does not allow the addition of new PHP extensions. In scenarios where these features are requisite, developers might find it more beneficial to switch to Laravel Valet

Will There be a Windows or Linux Version?

As of the current development roadmap, there are no plans to extend Laravel Herd support to Windows or Linux platforms. The focus remains steadfast on providing an optimized solution for macOS users, with no foreseeable expansion to other operating systems.

Conclusion: A WordPress Developer’s Perspective

As a WordPress developer venturing into the Laravel ecosystem, the introduction of Laravel Herd comes as a breath of fresh air. The native macOS application promises to streamline the local development process, offering a range of PHP versions and extensions that can potentially enhance the development workflow that we are accustomed to in the WordPress environment.

The straightforward installation process, coupled with the option to import Laravel Valet configurations, can significantly reduce the setup time, allowing us to dive into new development setups with familiar ease. Moreover, the performance optimization specifically for Apple silicon Mac holds the promise of a swift and efficient development experience.

While the tool currently limits itself to the macOS environment and restricts certain functionalities compared to Valet, it opens up a realm of possibilities for WordPress developers looking to expand their horizons.

As we anticipate potential expansions and updates to Laravel Herd, it holds a promising future in becoming a staple tool for developers, not just from the Laravel community but also for WordPress developers keen on diversifying their skill set and exploring new technological landscapes.

We all know that WordPress is a powerhouse in website creation. Its flexibility and robustness have made it a favorite among novices and seasoned web developers. However, like any popular platform, WordPress sites are often targeted by spammers who litter the comment sections with unwanted messages; this is annoying as a site owner or maintainer and deleting these span comments is a tedious process if we do it inside the WordPress Admin UI.

But WP CLI (Command Line Interface) is here to save the day. With WP CLI, managing spam comments becomes a breeze. This post will delve into using WP CLI to eliminate those pesky spam comments, ensuring your website is clean.

A Dive into WP CLI

If you are unaware, WP CLI is the command-line tool for WordPress. It allows you to interact with your site from the terminal, a haven for many developers. This tool simplifies various WordPress tasks, making managing your site less of a chore, and this will be the first post of a series about WP CLI.

Installation

Before you can command your site to obedience, you must install WP CLI. Most reputable WordPress hosting already provides SSH access and WP CLI by default, but if you need to install it on your local environment or in a hosting that is not installed, This is the official way to do it.

To be sure that everything is working, type on your terminal:

$ wp --info

You should see a similar output similar to the one below.

OS: Darwin 23.0.0 Darwin Kernel Version 23.0.0: Fri Sep 15 14:41:43 PDT 2023; root:xnu-10002.1.13~1/RELEASE_ARM64_T6000 arm64

WP-CLI cache dir: /Users/tmeister/.wp-cli/cache
WP-CLI global config:
WP-CLI project config:
WP-CLI version: 2.8.1

Preparing the Ground

Before you unleash WP CLI, ensure you have a recent site backup. It's a safety net, just in case things go south.

You can create a full database backup using:

$ wp db export

Yeah!! That's it; that command will create an SQL file with all the database information. I'll write more deeply about this command in future posts.

The Execution

Now, it's time to show those spam comments the door. Open your terminal, navigate to your WordPress directory, and type the following command:

$ wp comment delete $(wp comment list --status=spam --format=ids)

This command tells WP CLI to list all spam comments then delete them. Simple, yet powerful but let's break down this command into its two main components for better understanding:

Inner Command
(wp comment list --status=spam --format=ids)
:

wp comment list: This is the WP CLI command to list comments on your WordPress site.

--status=spam: This flag filters the list to only include comments marked as spam.

--format=ids: This flag formats the output to only show the IDs of the spam comments, instead of the full details.

Outer Command
wp comment delete
:

wp comment delete: This is the WP CLI command to delete comments.

$(...): This syntax is used to execute the inner command and pass its output (the IDs of spam comments) as arguments to the outer command.

So, in essence, this command operates in two steps:

It first fetches the IDs of all comments marked as spam.

It then passes these IDs to the wp comment delete command, which deletes all these spam comments from your WordPress site.

WP CLI is a robust tool that empowers you to manage your WordPress site efficiently. Deleting spam comments is just one of the many tasks WP CLI simplifies. It's time-saving, effective, and a must-have for every WordPress administrator.

WordPress Plugin Boilerplate CLI: The WPPB Generator on Your Terminal

WordPress developers often face the challenge of setting up new plugin projects quickly while adhering to best practices. That's why the WPPB generator site was created in the first place: to speed up this process.

Over time, terminal tooling has developed, expanded, and been widely adopted. The WordPress Plugin Boilerplate CLI addresses this need by providing a command-line tool that automates the creation of WordPress plugins based on the WordPress Plugin Boilerplate structure from our old friend wppb.me.

This CLI tool accelerates the process even more. With it, there's no need to download, unzip, and move the folder to the plugins directory. Just a single command, and you'll have your plugin ready to go.

What WordPress Plugin Boilerplate CLI Does

This CLI tool generates new WordPress plugins using a standardized structure. It allows developers to:

Create plugins based on the WordPress Plugin Boilerplate

Customize plugin details (name, description, author information)

Adhere to WordPress coding standards

Reduce initial plugin setup time

How to Use WordPress Plugin Boilerplate CLI

To start using the tool:

Install via Composer:

composer global require tmeister/wppb-cli

Ideally, from your
wp-content/plugins
directory, run the following command:

wppb new

Follow the prompts to input your plugin details

Benefits of Using WordPress Plugin Boilerplate CLI

Consistency: All plugins follow the same structure

Time-Saving: Reduces setup time for each new plugin project

Standards Compliance: Starts with a foundation that follows WordPress development standards

Customization: Allows tailoring of the generated plugin to specific needs

Technical Details

Requires Composer for installation

Compatible with PHP 8.1 and above

Uses Symfony Console and Laravel Prompts

Current Status and Future Development

I've currently tested the tool on Mac systems. I'm in the process of testing it on Linux and Windows. I welcome contributions and feedback from users on all platforms to help improve the tool's compatibility and functionality across different operating systems.

How to Contribute

Developers interested in improving WordPress Plugin Boilerplate CLI can submit Pull Requests for enhancements or bug fixes. The project is open-source and licensed under GPL v2 or later, as always.

Origins and Acknowledgments

This project builds upon the work of Enrique Chavez (@Tmeister), who created the original WordPress Plugin Boilerplate Generator. It aims to bring the convenience of that web-based tool to the command line.

By streamlining the initial setup process, I've designed WordPress Plugin Boilerplate CLI to allow developers like myself to focus more on creating plugin functionality and less on boilerplate code. Whether you're an experienced WordPress developer like me or just starting out, I believe this tool can help make your plugin development process more efficient.

Hey there 🙌

First off, a massive shoutout to every one of you. Your support and trust in wppb.me over the years have been nothing short of incredible. It's been a fantastic journey, and guess what? We're about to add another exciting chapter to that story.

At the moment of writing this post, more than 300,000 plugins have been built, and I hope many more to come.

Why a New Blog?

I can almost hear the cogs turning in your head: "Another blog? With so much content already out there, why add to the noise?" It's a question I've asked myself, too. Everyone seems to have a platform; what makes one more voice stand out? But here's my take: every voice, every story, every perspective is unique.
