For many parents, affording child care is a well-known struggle. In a new brief, we quantify the extent of the problem—and the extent to which some groups are disproportionately impacted. We estimate child care affordability for center- and home-based care for full-time working parents by income, race/ethnicity and immigrant status, nationally and by state.

Latest COI

All children deserve quality schools, clean air, parks and playgrounds, access to health care and economic security. These features have positive impacts on a child’s life, and they are measured and mapped in the new Child Opportunity Index (COI) 3.0.

Dataset

COI 3.0-2023, published in July 2025, is the most recent release of the Child Opportunity Index. With annual data for all U.S. neighborhoods from 2012 to 2023, COI 3.0-2023 is available at the census tract, ZIP code and county level.

Report

First findings from the Child Opportunity Index 3.0 find wide inequities in neighborhood opportunity between metro areas, within metros areas and for children of different races/ethnicities.
