NEW YORK - Dangerous heat is settling over the New York City area, with forecasters warning that it could feel as hot as 115 degrees during the worst of the heat wave.

An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for New York City until 9 p.m. Saturday.

Forecasters said afternoon heat index values could reach 105 to 115 degrees, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending time outside.

The heat is arriving ahead of the Fourth of July weekend, when many people are expected to travel, attend outdoor events or spend long stretches of time outside.

Highs in New York City could reach around 100 degrees Thursday and Friday, with temperatures staying hot and humid into Saturday.

Air quality concerns

The heat is also coming with air quality concerns.

An Air Quality Health Advisory is in effect Thursday for New York City because of elevated ozone levels. The alert runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Poor air quality can make it harder to breathe, especially for people with asthma, heart disease, lung disease or other respiratory conditions.

People with breathing issues are urged to limit strenuous outdoor activity when ozone levels are high.

Temperatures were already uncomfortable early Thursday.

Central Park was in the low 80s Thursday morning, but humidity made it feel closer to the low 90s. Newark was also in the mid-80s, with feels-like temperatures already in the 90s.

Forecasters said New York City could approach or break daily heat records during the heat wave.

Power outages

The heat also caused thousands of power outages on Thursday. At its peak, more than 19,000 customers across the region were without power at 8 p.m. Thursday.

By 10 p.m. Thursday, still more than 14,00 customers were without electricity including more than 13,000 in New York City, nearly 10,000 in New Jersey and hundreds on Long Island.

How to stay safe

People are urged to drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.

Anyone working or spending time outside should try to reschedule strenuous activity for early morning or evening.

Officials also urge residents to check on older adults, neighbors without air conditioning and anyone who may be more vulnerable to heat illness.

Signs of heat illness can include dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating, weakness, confusion or fainting. Heat stroke is an emergency, and anyone experiencing serious symptoms should call 911.

The dangerous heat is expected to continue through Saturday before easing slightly later in the weekend.

Thunderstorms may also develop Saturday afternoon, which could affect some Fourth of July weekend plans.

NEW JERSEY - Stifling temperatures in the region are causing massive delays and cancellations to NJ Transit service this week.

NJ Transit delays, cancellations 

Notices on the NJ Transit website on Thursday are reporting that trains are facing delays of up to one hour, and many trains could be canceled. 

Even trains that do run, NJ Transit said, may have to reduce their speeds, which could lead to more delays.

All of this is due to temperatures in the 100s throughout the region, creating issues with equipment.

In an effort to minimize the impacts, NJ Transit is diverting Midtown Direct service to Hoboken. Rail tickets and passes are also being cross honored by NJ Transit, PATH and private carrier buses at Newark Penn Station, 33rd Street and the N.Y. Waterway Ferry.

Earlier disruption

The update comes after NJ Transit service was suspended in both directions on the Morris and Essex, Gladstone Branch and Montclair-Boonton lines because of a disabled train near Newark Broad Street.

NJ Transit previously said rail tickets and passes were being cross-honored by NJ Transit buses, private carrier buses and PATH at Newark Penn Station, Hoboken and 33rd Street in New York.

Riders should allow extra travel time and check their line before heading out.

NEW YORK - The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is restricting access to Penn Station ahead of the Independence Day weekend.

The MTA announced the restrictions Thursday afternoon. The restrictions are in effect for Thursday, July 2, and Friday, July 3.

Passengers will not be allowed to enter the station from 33rd Street on Thursday and Friday, only the entrance at 34th Street and 7th Avenue.

SUGGESTED: NJ Transit diverts Midtown Direct trains to Hoboken due to extreme heat

Officials are asking Long Island Rail Road customers to travel through Grand Central Station or Atlantic Terminal for the next two days to alleviate some of the chaos that the restrictions will cause.

It's not clear why the 33rd Street entrance will be closed to incoming travelers. The MTA says the closures are "at the request of the NYPD," but did not explain further.

NEW YORK - Gov. Kathy Hochul is asking New Yorkers to voluntarily conserve electricity during a prolonged heat wave as the state monitors the electrical grid.

Hochul said New York State is in the middle of a prolonged heat wave and officials have been monitoring the electrical grid to make sure it can withstand increased energy use.

The governor said her team has been coordinating with Con Edison, NYISO and New York City leaders to reduce energy usage where possible.

According to Hochul, large consumers that can switch to other fuel sources have been asked to do so.

The governor said the voluntary conservation request comes amid increased energy demand and unexpected load challenges.

What Hochul said

"New York State is in the midst of a prolonged heat wave, and we've been carefully monitoring our electrical grid to ensure it is able to withstand the increase in energy usage and keep New Yorkers safe," Hochul said.

Hochul said New Yorkers who can safely reduce electricity use should do so by adjusting air conditioning and avoiding unnecessary appliance use.

"These small steps can go a long way," Hochul said.

How to conserve power

Hochul is asking New Yorkers to conserve electricity if it is safe to do so by:

• Setting air conditioning units between 75 and 78 degrees
• Avoiding unnecessary appliance use
• Reducing electricity use where possible during the heat wave

How to stay safe

Hochul emphasized that residents should not put themselves at risk while trying to conserve electricity.

She urged New Yorkers to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors and find a cooling center, especially older adults and people with health concerns.

"While we are asking for New Yorkers to voluntarily conserve power, it's critical to stay safe in this dangerous heat," Hochul said.

State officials will continue monitoring the grid as the heat wave continues, and energy demand remains high.

Hochul thanked New Yorkers for taking steps to reduce usage and "helping us keep the power on and protect the most vulnerable in our community."

NEW YORK - New York City recorded its fewest shooting incidents, shooting victims and murders for the first half of any year in recorded history, according to new NYPD data released Thursday.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the city recorded 322 shooting incidents from Jan. 1 through June 30. That beat the previous first-half record of 337, set in both 2018 and 2025.

The NYPD also reported 381 shooting victims, down from the previous record of 397 set in 2025.

Murders fell to 122 in the first half of 2026, down from 162 during the same period last year. The NYPD said that also marked the lowest first-half total in recorded history, beating the previous record of 136 set in 2017.

Overall, major crime was down 5.8% citywide, with 55,157 reported major crimes compared with 58,581 during the first half of 2025.

What officials said

"New York City’s public safety progress is the result of precision policing and the extraordinary work of the men and women of the NYPD," Tisch said. "They are going after the guns, taking down violent gangs, building the cases, making the arrests, and working foot posts that help keep neighborhoods safe."

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the numbers show New York City’s "whole-of-government approach to public safety is working."

"I thank Police Commissioner Tisch and the brave men and women of the NYPD for all they have done to make our city so safe, and look forward to building on this incredible progress," Mamdani said.

Major crime fell in several categories during the first half of the year, according to the NYPD:

• Murder: down 24.7%
• Robbery: down 11.9%
• Burglary: down 15.8%
• Grand larceny: down 4.2%
• Grand larceny auto: down 9.7%

Felony assault was virtually flat, with 14,757 reports compared with 14,752 during the same period last year.

Rape reports increased 5.8%, from 1,008 to 1,066. The NYPD said the increase was driven in part by reports of crimes that occurred in prior years and by cases that fall under New York’s expanded legal definition of rape.

Bronx sees largest crime drop

The Bronx led the city in major crime reductions, according to the NYPD.

Major crime in the borough fell 12% in the first half of the year, from 15,208 reported crimes to 13,434.

Auto theft in the Bronx was down 26.4%, grand larceny was down 13.6% and robbery was down 17.1%, police said.

Public housing and transit crime

The NYPD also reported historic lows in several public housing crime categories.

Police said public housing developments recorded the fewest murders, shooting incidents, shooting victims and robberies for the first six months of any year in recorded history.

Major crime in public housing was down 8.5% year to date, from 2,905 reported crimes to 2,659.

In the subway system, major crime was down 0.6% year to date and 1.9% during the second quarter.

Hate crimes

Confirmed hate crimes increased 7.7% year to date, with 322 confirmed incidents compared with 299 during the same period last year.

The NYPD said anti-Jewish hate crimes made up more than half of confirmed hate crimes during the first six months of the year. Anti-Jewish hate crimes increased 2.3%, from 174 to 178.

Confirmed hate crimes based on sexual orientation also increased, from 21 to 33.

The NYPD said the department’s crime statistics are preliminary and subject to further analysis, revision or change.

The department said it will continue using targeted deployments, violence reduction zones and enforcement initiatives focused on guns, gangs, retail theft, transit safety and traffic enforcement.

POINT LOOKOUT, N.Y. - Swimming was red-flagged at Point Lookout and nearby beaches after lifeguards spotted a 9-foot shark in the water, according to the Town of Hempstead.

Town officials said the shark was spotted by lifeguards at Town Park Point Lookout on Lido Boulevard.

As part of town policy, the beach and adjacent beaches were immediately red-flagged for swimming.

The town’s Shark Patrol was deployed to inspect local waters using a drone and jet ski.

Officials said the shark was spotted from the main lifeguard chair at Point Lookout, described as the most crowded area of the beach.

The sighting was confirmed by additional lifeguards and multiple beachgoers, according to the Town of Hempstead.

Supervisor Ferretti was expected to join the lifeguard who first spotted the shark to discuss the town’s response.

Swimmers should follow all posted beach warnings and instructions from lifeguards while the Shark Patrol checks the water.

NEW JERSEY - World Cup knockout soccer is coming to the New York City area Sunday as Brazil faces Norway in the Round of 16 at New York New Jersey Stadium.

Brazil advanced to the Round of 16 after a 2-1 win over Japan, setting up a high-profile matchup with a Norway team led by Erling Haaland.

Norway earned its spot with a 2-1 win over the Ivory Coast, with Haaland scoring the decisive goal late in the match.

The winner will move on to the quarterfinals and face the winner of Mexico vs. England.

The incident, which took place around noon, quickly caught the eyes of onlookers below and sparked a frenzy on social media as footage circulated online.

Once they reached the top, the duo raised a flag that read, "When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace."

The climbers began their descent around 12:30 p.m. before one of the climbers appeared to propose to the other on a spire platform. They continued climbing down just before 1 p.m.

The NYPD confirms that both individuals were taken into custody after helicopters swarmed the spire and officers climbed to the top themselves.

Starting Wednesday, NJ Transit bus and light rail fares have automatically increased by 3%.

This marks the second consecutive year that commuters have seen a bump in transit costs, following a larger 15% increase that took effect two years ago. This automatic 3% annual adjustment was built into the agency's long-term funding plan to ensure steady revenue.

Why are fares going up?

Passenger fares remain a critical financial lifeline for the transportation agency, keeping services running and helping to close budget gaps.

These fare collections are expected to generate approximately $980 million for NJ Transit’s proposed budget for the 2027 fiscal year. That $980 million makes up about 28% of the agency's total budget.

Commuters are advised to check their routes, as the new pricing takes effect immediately across all bus and light rail services.

QUEENS - An overnight crash involving a coach bus and multiple passenger vehicles on the Long Island Expressway (LIE) has left two people dead and nearly 20 others hospitalized.

A coach bus traveling westbound crashed into a vehicle around 11:45 p.m. Monday near Exit 16. That initial collision caused the bus to flip over the barrier, cross into oncoming traffic and crash into other vehicles, before flipping onto its side.

The fatal crash triggered a massive emergency response, with 79 fire and emergency personnel on the scene, alongside the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad.

Two people are dead, one is in critical condition and 17 others are stable. Police have confirmed that the deceased victims are the 35-year-old driver of the bus and one of the bus passengers.

On Wednesday, it was confirmed that the charter bus was an airport shuttle transporting the Royal Jordanian Airlines crews to a hotel.

The identities of the deceased victims have yet to be released.

The crash and investigation forced authorities to shut down all eastbound and westbound lanes overnight. The total closure resulted in massive gridlock, with some stranded motorists seen stepping out of their stationary vehicles during the delay.

As of Tuesday morning, the NYPD has cleared the primary wreckage from the roadway. Traffic is also flowing again on the westbound LIE.

New Jersey Family Leave Act expansion: Taking effect on July 17, the state is lowering the threshold of who qualifies for job-protected leave. This new rule expansion is expected to extend family leave protections to an estimated 400,000 additional workers across New Jersey.

Strict new e-bike regulations: New Jersey has officially reclassified all e-bikes as "motorized bicycles," and strict new rules will go into effect on July 19. To legally ride an e-bike, owners must now register the vehicle with the Motor Vehicle Commission, carry liability insurance, and hold a standard driver's license (or a special motorized bicycle license for 15- and 16-year-olds). Additionally, anyone under the age of 15 is strictly prohibited from riding an e-bike.

NEW YORK - As summer heats up, a slate of new regulations is set to make some changes across New York. 

Ranging from new surcharges on luxury secondary homes to employment protections for gig workers, new rules are taking effect this July that could impact your wallet, work and health coverage. Here is a breakdown of what New Yorkers need to know.

New York City "Pied-à-Terre" tax: Out-of-towners holding onto expensive secondary homes in the five boroughs will soon face a new state tax surcharge. Phase 1 of this new tax structure officially begins on July 1.

Health coverage terminations: Starting July 1, roughly 450,000 New Yorkers will lose their current health insurance coverage. This change is due to shifts in federal funding that are impacting the state's Essential Plan.

Mobile food vendor licenses: The NYC Health Department will begin issuing a mandated batch of new "supervisory licenses" for mobile street food vendors starting on July 1.

Protections for rideshare drivers: A new NYC Local Law designed to protect gig workers from "wrongful deactivation" by the rideshare apps they work for will officially take effect on July 28.

Compensation standards for security guards: Taking effect on July 28, this bill directs security guard employers in New York City to provide their employees with minimum wage, paid vacation time, and supplemental benefits.

NEW YORK CITY - July 1st is likely a happy day in the life of retired baseball star Bobby Bonilla and perhaps a frustrating one for the New York Mets payroll department. That is because every year on this date, the Mets pay Bonilla more than $1 million for a season he never actually played in Flushing.

NEW YORK CITY - New York City is officially gearing up for a stretch of extreme heat. 

With temperatures rapidly climbing, the combination of intense heat and heavy humidity is expected to create highly dangerous conditions across the five boroughs. Officials are preparing for what could be the most severe heatwave the city has seen in over a decade.

Emergency plans

To combat the dangerous temperatures, the city has activated its heat emergency plan to protect vulnerable New Yorkers and those without sufficient air conditioning.

• Cooling centers: Hundreds of cooling centers are opening across the city. You can locate your nearest center online.
• LinkNYC kiosks: Over 2,200 LinkNYC kiosks will display walking directions to the nearest cooling centers located within a 10-minute walk.
• Cool Vans: For the first time in history, the city is deploying 21 "Cool Vans." These vans will bring medical care, water and transportation to cooling centers for vulnerable populations, including the unhoused.

Pool and beaches

If you are looking to beat the heat by the water, the city has adjusted the hours for local beaches and pools.

City beaches are open for swimming and will remain open until 6 p.m. Olympic and intermediate-sized outdoor pools will stay open later, until 8:30 p.m.

Red Hook Pool, one of the city’s busiest pools, remains closed for repairs for the second year in a row.

Warning from mayor

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani released a PSA this week urging New Yorkers to take the impending weather seriously.

"We are entering what could be the most extreme heat wave this city has seen in over a decade. We’re ready. We want to make sure you are too."

The mayor stressed the importance of staying cool, whether residents are out celebrating the World Cup, Fourth of July, or—hypothetically speaking—renting out Madison Square Garden for a Taylor Swift wedding.

Experts strongly advise limiting your time outside during the peak heat of the afternoon. If you need to exercise or walk your pets, it is best to do so early in the morning before the worst of the heat sets in.

NEW YORK CITY - A stifling heat wave is settling over the New York City region, which will make the concrete jungle feel more like a steam bath for the next several days.

"Imagine you boil a pot of water, and you put the lid on top of it. That lid, that’s that heat dome building up. We’re underneath that lid, and the heat just kind of gathers up," FOX 5 Metrologist Mike Woods said to describe the oppressive weather pattern.

The humidity is already making its presence known. Early Wednesday morning, temperatures were sitting at a sticky 75 degrees in Central Park and 72 degrees in White Plains. South winds blowing at 5 to 15 mph are consistently pumping up the heat and humidity, which is building underneath a massive ridge of high pressure extending from the Atlantic waters down into the southeastern states.

There was a brief moment of respite for some as an isolated thunderstorm cluster developed over the central and eastern sections of Long Island before swinging south. While this system is helping to clear the area and bring temporarily drier conditions, the potential for more isolated pop-up storms remains as the atmosphere destabilizes under the intense heat.

Heat warnings

An excessive heat warning officially goes into effect at noon Wednesday and will last until about 9 p.m. Friday.

While actual temperatures will peak around 95 degrees on Wednesday, the humidity will make it feel even hotter. For the next three days, heat index values are expected to skyrocket to 110–115 degrees.

By Friday evening, the warning will transition into an excessive heat watch, but it won't offer much of a reprieve. Heat index values are still expected to hover around 105 degrees for the city Friday night and Saturday.

July 4th impacts

This extreme heat is part of a massive, life-threatening system baking over 230 million Americans leading up to America's 250th birthday this July 4th weekend.

FOX Weather reports that the last time NYC experienced back-to-back triple-digit days like the ones forecasted was over a decade ago, in 2011. While temperatures are expected to ease slightly by July 4th itself, the days leading up to the holiday will be brutal.

As New Yorkers prepare for the holiday weekend, extreme caution is advised. Health experts urge residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during peak heating hours, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and seek out air-conditioned spaces like malls or museums to escape the dangerous heat.

For 2026, the FIFA World Cup expanded to a 48-team tournament featuring 104 matches taking place from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada and Mexico. 

The 48 teams were divided into 12 groups of four with each team playing its group stage opponents for a total of three first-round games per side.

QUEENS - An investigation is underway after a disturbing discovery was made inside a school in Queens on Tuesday.

The NYPD responded to reports of possible human remains at PS 113/Anthony Pranzo School in the Glendale neighborhood around 9 a.m.

A source tells FOX 5 NY that an exterminator was brought in to inspect a foul smell coming from the chimney, which turned out to be possible human remains.

No students or faculty were inside the building at the time of the discovery.

Police have yet to release further details, including possible identification or how long the remains were inside the school.

The cause of death will be determined by the chief medical examiner.

NEW JERSEY - New Jersey Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr. is returning to Congress following a months-long absence, revealing that he had been away receiving treatment for depression.

Addressing the House floor on Tuesday, Kean opened up about the physical and emotional toll of the illness, declaring that he has returned "healthier, stronger and excited" to get back to work. 

Prior to his return, Kean had not voted in the House since March 5 and had missed over 100 votes, according to the Associated Press.

Despite his time away, Kean won an uncontested primary on June 2 and is continuing his campaign for reelection. In November, he will face Democratic nominee Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot, in what is expected to be one of New Jersey’s most closely watched and competitive races. 

Democrats view the district, which has flipped back and forth in recent election cycles, as a prime opportunity for a pickup. Trump has also endorsed Kean’s reelection.

As noted by the Associated Press, his extended absence created complications for House Republican leadership and Speaker Mike Johnson, who has been struggling to pass legislation with a razor-thin 218-212 majority.

Kean's political roots run deep in the state; his family's history in public service stretches back 250 years. His great-grandfather served as a U.S. senator, his grandfather was a congressman, and his father, Tom Kean Sr., was a two-term governor of New Jersey.
