Inspiring Lives of Purpose and Excellence

For more than 135 years, Latin School of Chicago has provided an educational experience that empowers students to tinker, make mistakes, ask questions, and change how they see the world around them. We put our students at the heart of everything we do, embrace their uniqueness, and encourage their curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and empathy. We also ensure that every Latin Learner has what they need to pursue their passions and lead lives of purpose and excellence.

Service is an important part of what it means to be a Latin Learner.

Recognition

This year, Latin School of Chicago received the Starlight Partner Award. Presented by Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and the Office of Family and Community Engagement (FACE), this award honors schools and community organizations that promote family learning and parent leadership.

At this event, the following individuals were also honored for their commitment to service: Chessie P., (9th) Peter P. (9th) and their families, for starting the nonprofit Teens for Migrants and Tim Cronister, Director of Student life, for his dedication, care and commitment  that "truly made a difference.”

We are proud to have a community that is committed to service, and who aspire to be changemakers.

Lower School

A service mindset begins in our Lower School, where our youngest students learn through buddy activities alongside older role models. They are also encouraged to participate in initiatives with their peers, such as the care kit project created by the fourth grade Changemakers Club. The project involved all students in JK through fourth grade creating items to include in handmade, custom bags. This club was very active this year, compiling snack bags for the homeless, making dog toys for PAWS, as well as hosting a beverage stand at the Spring Field Frenzy in support of the Anti-Cruelty Society.

Middle School

As students move into the Middle School, their awareness of the world around them grows, and they take a more active role in serving others.

Through Helping Hands, the Middle School service club, students made a significant impact during the school year. Homerooms also completed a variety of projects, ranging from creating cards for retirement home residents to assembling candy care packages for asylum-seeking children. Service also became a regular part of the athletics program, with 100% of spring sports teams participating in their own projects.

The Middle School Fall Day of Service provided opportunities for students to engage more deeply with community partners through off-campus experiences. Eighth- and sixth-grade students visited Bernie's Books, seventh-grade students volunteered at the Greater Chicago Food Depository, and fifth-grade students helped the Chicago Park District with mulching projects. This immersive experience continued during the Spring Day of Service, when students volunteered at retirement homes and organizations including Cradles to Crayons, Feed My Starving Children and Misericordia.

Upper School

In the Upper School, service becomes second nature as students choose where they want to help or launch their own initiatives and clubs. Grade-level, on-campus projects took place regularly throughout the year, while advisories, affinity groups and athletic teams also organized their own initiatives. The Student Service Learning Board oversaw numerous service drives, collecting books, clothing, canned goods and sports equipment. The group also helped organize a variety of other on- and off-campus service events. Collectively, Upper School students logged 5,760 hours of service during the 2025-26 school year.

The year's largest off-campus service projects took place during the MLK Commemoration Day and Project Week. One of the highlights of Project Week was a student trip to Los Angeles, where participants worked alongside Habitat for Humanity on rebuilding efforts.

In the spring, there was a Service Fair that provided the following community partners with the opportunity to visit campus and share more about their missions and ways to get involved:

Alliance for the Great Lakes Cornerstone Community Outreach (CCO) Lincoln Park Conservancy
Anti-Cruelty Cradles to Crayons Misericordia

Student Initiatives

Several of our students have started their own nonprofits and spearheaded service initiatives.

  • Carrying Hope, founded by Naomi H. and Myles A. to support people undergoing chemotherapy, assembled 3,500 tote bags filled with comfort items during one of its events.
  • Teens for Migrants, founded and supported by Latin students and families, continued to serve the Pilsen community by hosting celebrations for Christmas, Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day and partnering on book and clothing drives for those in need.
  • Knit Knot Knoop, founded by Latin student Kate E., earned the Daily Point of Light Award for educating young people about homelessness through knitting.

Other imaginative, student-driven projects included reading to young children at an under-resourced library; assisting with eye exams at clinics; rescuing injured animals on local beaches; cleaning and decorating homes for veterans; shopping with older adults; participating in Chicago River cleanups; tutoring asylum-seeking students; and teaching at a dance studio.

We are proud of the many ways our students embrace service and demonstrate what it means to be engaged, compassionate members of a broader community.

Alumna Makes Tony Awards History

Earlier this month, Latin alumna Whitney White ’04 became the first Black woman to receive two Tony Award nominations for Best Direction of a Play and was the only woman nominated in the category this year.

Her direction of
"Liberation," written by Bess Wohl, helped earn the production five Tony nominations. The play went on to win the Tony Award for Best Play and was also awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

White received her first Tony Award nomination in 2024 for her direction of "Jaja’s African Hair Braiding." Her successful Broadway debut in 2023 led to the show being extended twice before transferring to the Chicago Shakespeare Theater in 2025.

While at Latin, Whitney was deeply involved in the performing arts, participating in the theater ensemble and choirs during her four years in the Upper School. She was also a member of the Black Student Union, the basketball team, and the track and field team.

We congratulate Whitney on her achievements and look forward to celebrating her continued successes throughout her theater career.
