The old cadence of one critical Linux kernel CVE per year or two is gone. For actively exploited vulnerabilities, the median time from disclosure to mass exploitation is now zero days. The defender's median time to patch is 32 days. Exploitation of edge-device CVEs increased roughly eightfold in a single year according to Verizon's 2025 Data Breach Investigations Report. A key factor driving the vulnerability discovery side is AI. Large language models can now do work that until recently belonged to a small group of security specialists: reading large code bases for patterns, reconstructing stripped binaries, identifying candidate vulnerabilities. The pool of researchers capable of producing a Copy Fail-class flaw is widening, and the time each of them needs is shrinking.
