Hard Hats. Strong Women. Building the Future.
About us
Hard Hats. Strong Women. Building the Future. Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) prepares, trains, and places women in careers in the skilled construction, utility, and maintenance trades, helping women achieve economic independence and a secure future. Founded in 1978, NEW is a sector-based workforce development program that prepares women for careers in the construction, transportation, energy, and facilities maintenance industries. NEW focuses on skilled, unionized jobs in the trades with starting wages averaging $15 per hour, benefits, and a path to higher-wage employment. NEW primarily serves low-income minority women from all five boroughs in New York City. These careers enable NEW graduates to provide a secure future for themselves and their families. Since 2005, NEW has placed over 725 graduates with 32 different regional unions, including 28 in New York City. NEW’s relationships with apprentice directors are strengthened further as NEW continues to refer qualified and successful candidates to each trade. As a result, the Carpenters, Laborers, and Operating Engineers apprenticeship programs each have over 15 percent tradeswomen. In addition, NEW graduates have been placed in over 700 positions in the construction, energy, transportation, green, and facilities maintenance industries.

There are moments that stay with you - and yesterday’s NEW luncheon was one of them. I’m proud to have led DEWALT’s participation at this event and our continued partnership with Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW), an organization creating real pathways into the skilled trades through training, support, and opportunity. The highlight of the day was hearing directly from the tradeswomen themselves. Their stories reflected meaningful career transformation and were a powerful reminder of the human impact behind workforce development. Congratulations to NEW’s Tradeswoman of the Year, Olivia Walsh from UA Plumbers & Gas-fitters Local Union No. 1 - a standout trailblazer leading with impact and purpose. A special thank you to the NEW team for their partnership - especially President Leah Rambo and Michiko Simanjuntak Grasso - for making this experience possible. Thank you to John Finazzo and the DEWALT team members who showed up to support this important moment. And thank you to Maria Ford for her leadership and for championing this partnership. Grateful for this experience - and proud to be part of a partnership driving real impact in the skilled trades. 📸 Diane Bondareff Jennifer Walker John Finazzo Albert Fitzgerald Lynn Manzella Decker Brian Frederick Chris Cannon Beth Pointer Adam Schair Lisa Castro Will Ortiz Stefanie Fina Michael Fina Anthony Busani Brandon Camposano Kate Ledingham
