first proper kit arrived. time to stop researching and actually pick some locks.

my first proper kit has just arrived, so naturally I thought i’d share a photo rather than actually use it!

i’ve only really dabbled in the past with one of those cheap aliexpress kits, but i’ve now spent an entirely unreasonable amount of time reading, watching videos, comparing profiles, debating thicknesses and convincing myself that every tiny variation might be the one thing standing between me and competence.

I went for a fairly focused custom multipick set rather than a huge all-purpose kit (probably wo:

0.6 mm picks

  • curve / spoon

  • half diamond

  • medium round hook

  • tall thin hook

  • straight probe

0.6 mm cycloid rakes

  • large double

  • large quad

  • small double

  • small quint

0.4 mm picks

  • curve / spoon

  • medium round hook

tension tools

  • double-ended tok/bok wrenches: 0.8 mm, 1.0 mm and 1.3 mm

  • tapered bent bok, 0.8 to 1.4 mm

  • double-ended flat tok, 1.0 mm

dimple

  • flat flag

plus a leather case.

it probably would have been better value to buy one of the larger ready-made sets, but I rather enjoyed the process of being fussy about every individual profile and thickness. whether it will cost me more in the long run remains to be seen.

how did I do?

very pleased with it. now to pick some locks and go for some belts.

PSA from the mods - stop reporting posts for Rule 2 that are not Rule 2.

Dear person who is very angry we removed one of your posts,

We get it. You disagreed about the removal of one of your posts under Rule 2 - lock in use. Your lock was attached to or securing something, and it was taken down. As a result, you have decided to report every single post where a lock shackle has something on it, including the keys to the lock, as rule 2.

Just be aware that every time you do this, we report you for report abuse. Eventually reddit will close your account. Stop being pedantic, you are not changing anyone's mind about how we enforce the rule. It only takes us a second to clear your report, and then report you. Own your mistake and just move on with your life.
