Mental Health, Caregiver Stress, and Anticipatory Grief in the Sandwich Generation

There is a moment in adulthood that few people feel prepared for.

It is not graduating from college.

It is not getting married.

It is not becoming a parent.

Instead, it is the moment you realize your parents may not always be able to care for themselves in the way they once did.

For example, you may help your dad access a patient portal because he cannot remember his password.

Perhaps you notice your mom repeating the same story several times during dinner.

You may also find yourself picking up medication for your child and your aging parent on the same afternoon.

Or, you may receive the phone call you have quietly feared for years.

For many older Millennials and Gen X adults, this stage of life arrives while they are already managing many responsibilities.

They may be:

Raising children

Building careers

Maintaining relationships

Managing finances

Caring for their homes

Supporting friendships

Scheduling appointments

Keeping up with school events

Meanwhile, their parents begin needing more help.

As a result, these adults often find themselves caught between two generations that both need their care.

Researchers commonly refer to this group as the sandwich generation.

And, understandably, this season can feel overwhelming.

What Is the Sandwich Generation?

The sandwich generation includes adults who care for aging parents while also supporting children, managing careers, maintaining relationships, and handling daily responsibilities.1

Often, these adults are members of Generation X or older Millennials.

Families throughout Southeast Michigan and across the state experience this challenge every day.

For instance, you may be coordinating care for aging parents in Grand Blanc. At the same time, you may be driving between medical appointments in Birmingham. Meanwhile, you may also be raising children and managing a household in Oxford.

Because of these overlapping responsibilities, the emotional and physical effects can be significant.

Even so, many people feel that they should simply handle everything on their own.

However, caregiver stress and anticipatory grief are both common. More importantly, both deserve attention and support.

Anticipatory Grief: Grieving Before the Goodbye

One of the most difficult parts of caring for an aging parent is realizing that grief may begin before death.2

You may grieve:

The parent who once had all the answers

The loss of family traditions

Their declining independence

Changes in their memory or personality

The gradual reversal of family roles

A future that may no longer be possible

This experience is known as anticipatory grief. In other words, it is the grief that occurs before an expected loss.3

Anticipatory grief may bring sadness, anger, guilt, fear, exhaustion, and even relief.

Although these emotions can feel confusing, they are common responses to a painful and uncertain situation.

For example, you can miss someone who is still sitting across the table from you.

Likewise, you can love your parent deeply while also feeling frustrated by the demands of caregiving.

At the same time, you can feel grateful and overwhelmed.

Both feelings can be true.

The Hidden Mental Load of Caregiving

Caregiving is not only physical.

It is also emotional, logistical, and often invisible.

For example, caregiving may involve:

Knowing which specialist to contact

Tracking medications

Researching assisted living options

Coordinating care with siblings

Completing insurance paperwork

Checking in on your children

Responding to work emails

Remembering birthdays and appointments

Supporting your partner after a difficult day

Individually, these tasks may seem manageable.

However, together, they can quickly become exhausting.

Research shows that family caregivers often experience more stress, anxiety, sleep problems, and symptoms of depression than people who are not caregivers.4

Even so, many caregivers continue telling themselves:

“Other people have it harder.”

“I should be able to handle this.”

“I do not have time to fall apart.”

However, admitting that caregiving is difficult does not mean you are ungrateful.

Instead, it means you are being honest about what this role requires.

Why Caregiver Guilt Is So Common

Guilt often becomes part of the caregiving experience.

For example, you may feel guilty because:

You do not call often enough

You become frustrated

You live far away

You want a break

You disagree with your siblings

You need to set boundaries

You wonder whether you did enough

The truth is that no one handles caregiving perfectly.

There is no perfect script for helping a parent move into assisted living.

Likewise, there is no reward for saying every right thing during hospice care.

There is also no simple handbook for explaining dementia to your children while trying to understand it yourself.

Ultimately, there is simply love doing its best under difficult circumstances.

Parenting Children While Caring for Aging Parents

Many Gen X and Millennial adults are parenting children while also supporting aging parents.5

For example, one generation may need a ride to soccer practice.

Meanwhile, the other may need transportation to a medical appointment.

One child may need help with algebra.

At the same time, a parent may need help accessing an online bank account.

Both generations need support.

As a result, it can become easy to disappear from your own life.

Millions of Americans provide unpaid care to aging family members while also balancing work and family responsibilities.

Therefore, feeling stretched thin does not mean you are failing.

Instead, it may simply mean that you are carrying too much.

Signs of Caregiver Stress and Burnout

The emotional demands of caregiving can affect your mental health.

For instance, caregivers may experience:

Anxiety

Depression

Chronic stress

Sleep disruption

Irritability

Emotional exhaustion

Social withdrawal

Loss of interest in enjoyable activities

Over time, the effort required to support aging parents while maintaining a career, relationships, and parenting responsibilities may lead to caregiver burnout.

You may need additional support if you feel:

Constantly exhausted

Overwhelmed by daily responsibilities

More emotionally reactive

Disconnected from other people

Unable to enjoy activities

Unable to rest without feeling guilty

Unfortunately, there is no way to remove all the pain that can come with watching someone you love age.

However, there are ways to carry that pain more gently.

Let Other People Help

First, allow others to support you.

Accept the meal.

Say yes when someone offers to sit with your parent.

Ask a sibling to make a phone call.

Delegate tasks whenever possible.

Although asking for help may feel uncomfortable, you do not have to manage every responsibility alone.

Name What You Are Feeling

Next, try to identify your emotions.

You may feel:

Grief

Fear

Anger

Sadness

Relief

Love

Naming your emotions can make them feel less overwhelming.

In addition, it may reduce the shame that often surrounds difficult feelings.

Protect Your Own Health

Caregivers often place their own health at the bottom of the list.

However, your well-being matters too.

Therefore, try to:

Attend your medical appointments

Move your body regularly

Sleep when possible

Eat complete meals

Take short breaks

Make time for quiet

These actions may seem small.

Even so, they can help protect your physical and emotional health.

Stay Connected to Other People

Isolation can make caregiver stress feel worse.

For that reason, stay connected whenever possible.

You may benefit from:

Calling a trusted friend

Joining a caregiver support group

Talking with a therapist

Asking relatives for practical help

Spending time with people who understand

Connection may not change the situation.

However, it can make the situation feel less lonely.

Let Go of Perfection

You will forget things.

You may lose patience.

You will probably second-guess some decisions.

Even so, you can only make choices based on the information you have at the time.

Therefore, you do not have to perform caregiving perfectly.

Sometimes, doing your best is enough.

River’s Bend Resources That May Help

You may also find these River’s Bend resources helpful:

After all, caregiving does not happen in isolation.

Your mental health matters too.

Grief After the Loss of a Parent

When a parent dies, grief may feel immediate and overwhelming.

However, it may also feel quiet or delayed.

In some cases, a caregiver may first feel relief after years of stress.

Then, guilt may follow that relief.

There is no single correct way to grieve.6

Grief does not move through a neat series of stages.

Instead, it may return unexpectedly.

At times, it may soften.

At other times, it may become sharp again.

For example, you may still reach for the phone.

You may still hear your parent’s voice in your mind.

You may still want to tell them something funny.

These moments are also expressions of love.

Mental Health Support for Caregivers in Michigan

If you are dealing with caregiver stress, anticipatory grief, anxiety, depression, or a major life transition, support is available.

River’s Bend provides compassionate, evidence-based behavioral healthcare for individuals and families throughout Southeast Michigan.

In addition, virtual appointments are available across the state of Michigan.

You may be looking for support while caring for an aging parent.

You may be grieving the loss of someone you love.

Or, you may be trying to balance the many demands of this stage of life.

Whatever you are facing, you do not have to face it alone.

Healing does not require having every answer.

Sometimes, it begins with having support when you need it most.

Contact Our Care Team

For Anyone Walking This Road Right Now

Several members of the River’s Bend team have recently lost parents.

Others are caring for aging loved ones while also raising children and managing careers.

Therefore, we understand that this season can feel especially heavy.

Please remember:

You are not alone.

There is no perfect way to love someone through aging and loss.

Sometimes, love looks like:

Making the phone call

Asking the difficult question

Sitting beside the hospital bed

Listening to the same story again

Holding a hand

Remembering a recipe

Packing a dorm room

Attending the meeting

Trying again tomorrow

Ultimately, love is often found in the ordinary and extraordinary moments that make up a life.

If caregiver stress, grief, anxiety, or life changes have become difficult to carry, support is available.

Our therapists understand that mental health is not separate from the realities of life.

Instead, it is woven into them.

Sometimes, strength does not mean carrying everything alone.

Rather, strength may mean allowing someone else to help carry it with you.

Because even the people everyone depends on deserve support.

As our nation marks its 250th anniversary, we can reflect on what truly makes America strong. Our strength lies in our communities, our families, and the people who care for others every day.

Fireworks, parades, and backyard barbecues are beloved traditions. However, this historic milestone also invites us to celebrate differently. Specifically, we can focus on ways that nurture our well-being and strengthen our connections with the people who matter most.

At River’s Bend, we believe that meaningful moments of togetherness support emotional wellness. Furthermore, these moments create lasting memories. Therefore, consider adding a few intentional practices to your family’s celebration this year.

Healthy and Fun Ways to Celebrate Together

Create opportunities for connection. First, put away devices for part of the day. Instead, engage in activities that encourage conversation and laughter. For example, you can share stories about family traditions. You can also ask older relatives about the history they have witnessed, or discuss what community means to each generation.

Get outside and move. For instance, you can attend a local parade or take a family walk. Organizing a neighborhood game or enjoying a picnic before the fireworks are also great options. Ultimately, physical activity supports both physical and mental health while helping families bond.

Volunteer as a family. In fact, service is one of the most meaningful ways to celebrate our nation’s spirit. You can deliver meals, participate in a community clean-up, or collect supplies for local organizations. Alternatively, you can simply write thank-you notes to local heroes.

Practice mindful celebration. Holidays bring joy, but they can also cause stress or overstimulation. Consequently, it helps to schedule quiet moments throughout the day. Remember to encourage healthy sleep routines, stay hydrated, and check in with family members who need extra support.

Honoring Those Who Serve

As we commemorate this historic anniversary, we want to extend our deepest gratitude to our frontline workers.

Healthcare professionals, first responders, and educators show extraordinary courage every day. Similarly, military personnel and public safety officers show immense dedication. These individuals have cared for our communities during times of crisis, even while managing high stress themselves.

At River’s Bend, we recognize that resilience requires proper support. True resilience means having the tools, relationships, and resources needed to navigate life’s challenges in healthy ways.

Because of this understanding, we developed specialized Frontline Resilience Programs. These programs support those who spend their careers caring for others. Through these services, we provide evidence-based education and practical coping strategies. As a result, individuals can recognize the signs of burnout, improve stress management, and prioritize their own well-being.

In addition, we created accessible resources specifically for frontline professionals. These assets include practical guides focused on recognizing burnout and building sustainable habits. These resources reinforce an important truth: seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Check out our Resource Page

A Celebration of Hope

As America enters its next chapter, we must honor the past by investing in our future.

Therefore, celebrate with joy and make room for gratitude. Check in on those you love and those you don’t know. Most importantly, thank those who serve. Remember that caring for our mental health is a powerful act of community.

From all of us at River’s Bend, thank you to the families, neighbors, and frontline workers who make our communities stronger every day. Here’s to 250 years of resilience, compassion, and hope. Together, we can build a healthier future.

When Your Kids Are Growing Up and You Are Asking, “What Comes Next?”

By July, the year may feel very different than it did in January.

At the start of the year, you may have set goals with energy and optimism. However, daily responsibilities may have slowly taken over. College orientations, graduation parties, and back-to-school shopping can all signal that change is coming.

For many parents across Southeast Michigan and throughout the state, this season can feel emotional.

For example, you may be helping your teen prepare for college. They may be heading to Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, Oakland University, Grand Valley State University, or another campus.

At the same time, you may be adjusting to a quieter home after years of carpools, sports practices, and school events.

As a result, these changes can bring many emotions at once. You may feel proud, sad, anxious, and hopeful.

Maybe you are trying not to cry while shopping for dorm supplies.

Perhaps your youngest just earned a driver’s license. On one hand, you feel proud. On the other hand, you may also feel nervous.

Or maybe your home is already quieter. After years of caring for everyone else, you may finally have time to ask:

Who am I when my family does not need me in the same way?

If this question feels familiar, this may be the right time for a mid-year mental health check.

Life Changes Can Bring Strong Emotions

Graduations, college acceptance letters, and new beginnings are worth celebrating.

Even so, positive changes can still cause stress.

For instance, parents may experience:

More worry about their child

Sadness about changing family roles

Feelings of loneliness or loss

Trouble sleeping

A reduced sense of purpose

Worry about aging or the future

Questions about relationships or career goals

These feelings are common.

In addition, many adults are managing several changes at the same time. Their children may be becoming more independent. Meanwhile, their parents may need more care. Work may still feel demanding, and finances may also change.

Because of this, many people realize that they have spent years caring for others while putting their own needs aside.

Research shows that major life changes can increase emotional distress. Furthermore, several stressors at once may raise the risk of anxiety and depression.¹

Still, you do not need to be in crisis to admit that something feels different.1

When Staying Busy Is No Longer Helping

Many adults become skilled at caring for everyone around them.

You attend soccer games in Rochester Hills, graduations in Troy, medical visits in Novi, and family events across Metro Detroit.

You solve problems. You manage schedules. You keep everyone moving.

Meanwhile, your own emotional needs may move to the bottom of the list.

Over time, emotional fatigue can become harder to ignore.

For example, you may notice:

Feeling tired even after rest

Becoming more irritable

Having trouble focusing

Losing interest in activities

Feeling emotionally numb

Using alcohol or other habits to cope

Feeling like you are going through the motions

At first, you may dismiss these signs as “just stress.”

However, they may be your mind and body’s way of asking you to slow down.

This can be especially important in today’s fast-paced digital world.2

Five Questions for a Mid-Year Mental Health Check

To begin, take a few minutes to ask yourself:

What has given me energy this year?

What has drained me?

How have I handled stress?

Who can I turn to for support?

What small change could help my mental health?

There are no right or wrong answers.

Instead, the goal is awareness.

Once you understand what you need, you can begin making changes.

What Can Recentering Look Like?

Recentering does not always require a major life change.

In fact, it may involve simple steps, such as:

Scheduling your own medical appointments

Meeting a friend for coffee

Taking a walk after dinner

Returning to a favorite hobby

Setting clearer boundaries

Starting therapy again

Asking for support

Allowing yourself to grieve a season that is ending

In other words, recentering is not always about becoming a new person.

More often, it means reconnecting with the parts of yourself that have been overlooked.

Support Is Available Across Michigan

This season may feel heavier than you expected.

If so, support is available.

River’s Bend works with adults throughout Southeast Michigan and across the state. In particular, we support people experiencing:

Anxiety

Depression

Burnout

Emotional fatigue

Life changes

Changing family roles

For example, you may be adjusting to an empty nest in Rochester Hills. You may be supporting aging parents in Traverse City. Or you may be balancing a demanding career in Grand Rapids.

Likewise, you may be preparing to send your youngest child to college from the Upper Peninsula.

No matter where you live, you do not have to manage these changes alone.

River’s Bend offers both in-person and virtual treatment options. Therefore, compassionate, evidence-based care is available to people across Michigan.

Most importantly, you do not have to wait for a crisis.

Reaching out early can be a healthy and important step.

Download the Mid-Year Mental Wellness Reset Workbook

You may know that you need to check in with yourself.

However, you may not know where to begin.

That is why River’s Bend created the Mid-Year Mental Wellness Reset Workbook.

This free resource can help you pause, reflect, and reconnect with what matters most.

Inside, the workbook includes:

Reflection prompts

A burnout self-assessment

Values exercises

Goal reset worksheets

Self-care planning tools

Guidance on when support may help

The goal is not to fix your entire life at once.

Instead, the workbook can help you take one thoughtful step forward.

After all, growth often begins with small moments of honesty and reflection.

More River’s Bend Resources

You may also find these resources helpful:

Emotional Fatigue vs. Burnout: When Summer Stress Signals a Need for Support

Ultimately, you can care for yourself while also supporting your family.

Both matter.

You Matter, Too

If you have spent years being the person everyone depends on, focusing on yourself may feel unfamiliar.

Even so, caring for yourself is not selfish.

It is necessary.

As your children grow, your role may change. However, this transition is not only about what you are losing.

It may also be about what you are reclaiming.

Your interests.

Your relationships.

Your health.

Your dreams.

The second half of the year does not have to be about doing more.

Instead, it may be about using your time and energy with more purpose.

So, take the walk.

Schedule the appointment.

Download the workbook.

Start the conversation.

Ask for help when you need it.

Above all, remember:

You do not have to earn rest.

You do not have to wait for a crisis to seek support.

You are allowed to recenter.

Fortunately, the everyday habits that improve mental wellness are often simple, manageable, and grounded in consistency.

Tiny Changes, Meaningful Impact, and Support When You Need It

Have you ever promised yourself that this would be the week you finally changed everything?

You planned to wake up at 5 a.m., meditate for 45 minutes, prepare every meal, run five miles, journal each day, and drink a gallon of water.

Then Wednesday arrived, and you found yourself eating crackers over the kitchen sink.

Welcome. You are human.

The good news is that mental wellness does not depend on perfection. Instead, it grows through small and consistent actions.

Research suggests that repeatable behaviors can strengthen emotional resilience, improve mood, and help people manage stress over time.1

Fortunately, the habits that support mental wellness are often simple.

With that in mind, let’s begin there.

1. Keep a Consistent Sleep Routine

Sleep affects almost every part of your well-being.

For example, it can influence:

Mood

Concentration

Stress tolerance

Decision-making

Relationships

However, sleep is often the first thing people sacrifice when life becomes busy.

You do not need to completely change your routine overnight. Instead, begin with a few manageable steps:

Go to bed and wake up at about the same time each day

Reduce screen time before bed

Create a calming bedtime routine

Limit caffeine later in the day

Sleep problems are common among people experiencing depression, anxiety, ADHD, substance use concerns, or emotional distress.2

At River’s Bend, our Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Psychiatric Services, and Adult Counseling Services often help individuals rebuild healthy daily routines.

In many cases, improving sleep becomes an important part of that process.

2. Move Your Body, Even for a Few Minutes

In addition to better sleep, regular movement can also support mental wellness.

However, that does not mean you need to train for a marathon.

Physical activity may help regulate stress hormones, improve sleep, and support a more stable mood.

For example, movement can include:

Walking the dog

Gardening

Dancing in the kitchen

Stretching between meetings

Parking farther from the entrance

Taking a short walk during lunch

Every small amount of movement counts.

Furthermore, movement may become a helpful coping strategy for people participating in Early Recovery Groups (ERG), Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Programs, or Health Professional Recovery Program services.

Over time, regular movement may support both emotional wellness and long-term recovery.

3. Practice the “One Person” Rule

Along with sleep and movement, connection also matters.

Social support can protect emotional well-being and help people cope with difficult situations.

Therefore, try to connect with at least one person each day.

For instance, you might:

Text a friend

Call a sibling

Spend time with your spouse without multitasking

Ask your teenager a thoughtful question

Check in with a trusted coworker

Connection does not need to be complicated.

Instead, it simply needs to be intentional.

For many people participating in Adult Mental Health Counseling, IOP, PHP, ERG, or specialized recovery programs, reconnecting with others becomes an important part of healing.

4. Notice What You Are Putting Into Your Mind

Just as physical habits matter, emotional input matters too.

Many people pay attention to what they eat. However, fewer people notice what they consume emotionally.

Take a moment to ask yourself:

How much time am I spending doom-scrolling?

Do certain social media accounts leave me feeling worse?

Am I consuming content that increases my anxiety?

Have I made enough room for humor, joy, or inspiration?

Mental wellness does not require you to ignore difficult events.

Rather, it involves balancing awareness with emotional protection.

For example, you may decide to limit news alerts, unfollow stressful accounts, or take regular breaks from social media.

As a result, these small choices can help create more emotional space.

5. Make One Decision Tomorrow Easier

In addition to emotional overload, stress often builds through small moments of decision fatigue.

Fortunately, simple preparation can reduce that pressure.

Try helping your future self by:

Laying out your clothes

Preparing lunch in advance

Putting your keys in the same place

Setting reminders

Writing a short list

Organizing important items the night before

These small actions can create a greater sense of calm.

Moreover, they may be especially helpful for people with attention or executive functioning challenges.

River’s Bend offers Adult ADHD/ADD Assessments to help individuals better understand their strengths, challenges, and treatment options.

Sometimes, the thought “I just cannot get organized” may deserve a closer look.

6. Pay Attention to Your Coping Strategies

As you build healthier routines, it is also important to notice how you respond to stress.

Everyone uses coping strategies.

The important question is whether those strategies help you move through stress or simply avoid it.

Helpful coping strategies may include:

Exercise

Journaling

Therapy

Creative activities

Prayer or spiritual practices

Talking with trusted people

On the other hand, less helpful coping strategies may include:

Avoidance

Excessive screen time

Isolation

Increased alcohol use

Misusing substances

Overworking

If alcohol or other substances have become your main way of managing stress, it may be time to seek additional support.

River’s Bend offers:

Substance Abuse Evaluations

Ambulatory Detoxification

Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Programs

SAP-DOT Evaluations

Lawyers and Judges Assistance Program services

Health Professional Recovery Program services

These programs help individuals address substance use concerns in a safe and compassionate setting.

Most importantly, seeking help early can make a meaningful difference.

7. Ask for Help Before You Reach a Breaking Point

Finally, one of the most important habits is learning to ask for help before things become unbearable.

One of the most harmful myths about mental health is that you must wait until life becomes unbearable before asking for help.

You do not.

Support is not only for a crisis.

Sometimes, asking for support begins with a simple statement:

“I have been feeling anxious lately.”

“I am not coping as well as I used to.”

“I think I need someone to talk to.”

“I am worried about my drinking.”

“My teenager seems different.”

“I do not know exactly what I need, but something has to change.”

At River’s Bend, our services are designed to meet people where they are.

For example, you may be looking for Adult Mental Health and Substance Abuse Counseling Services.

You may need Psychiatric Services.

You may also need a higher level of care through Mental Health IOP or PHP.

In addition, River’s Bend offers specialized evaluations and an Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program for teens experiencing both mental health and substance use concerns.

You do not need to have every answer before reaching out.

You only need to take the first step.

Habits That Improve Mental Wellness Do Not Require Perfection

Ultimately, mental wellness is not about becoming the most productive version of yourself.

It is not about checking every box.

It is also not about getting everything right.

Instead, it is about paying attention to what supports you.

That may mean returning to helpful routines.

It may also mean giving yourself grace when life becomes difficult.

Likewise, it may mean recognizing when additional support could help you move forward.

One extra glass of water.

One walk around the block.

One earlier bedtime.

One honest conversation.

One therapy appointment.

One recovery meeting.

Each small action can matter.

Meaningful change rarely happens all at once.

More often, it develops through small moments that are easy to overlook.

When Small Habits No Longer Feel Manageable

Even so, there may be times when simple habits feel difficult.

If that happens, it does not mean you have failed.

Instead, it may mean you need more support.

River’s Bend serves individuals and families throughout Southeast Michigan. In addition, virtual appointments are available across the entire state of Michigan.

Our team supports people navigating:

Anxiety

Depression

Substance use concerns

ADHD

Recovery

Life transitions

Emotional distress

Healing does not require perfection.

Rather, it begins with one manageable step.

Sometimes, that step is asking for help.

Contact Our Care Team to Get Started

River’s Bend offers compassionate, evidence-based behavioral healthcare for individuals and families throughout Michigan.

Whether you need counseling, psychiatric support, substance use treatment, an evaluation, or a higher level of care, our team can help you explore your options.

Ah, summer.

While summer is often seen as a carefree season of sunshine, teen mental health can actually face unexpected challenges during these unstructured months.

At least, that’s what the brochure promised.

In reality, many parents find themselves wondering things like:

“How is my teenager sleeping until noon and still exhausted?”

“Have they always eaten this many snacks?”

“Is ‘I’m fine’ actually a complete sentence now?”

“If I hear ‘There’s nothing to do’ one more time after spending hundreds of dollars on camps and activities, I may lose my own coping skills.”

If this sounds familiar, take comfort in knowing you’re not alone and neither is your teen.

Families throughout Southeast Michigan and across the state often describe summer as a season of contradictions. It’s supposed to be relaxing, yet many parents find themselves juggling work schedules, transportation logistics, increased screen time, shifting routines, and concerns about their teen’s emotional well-being.

Whether you’re navigating summer in Rochester Hills, Troy, Novi, Clarkston, Birmingham, Royal Oak, Grand Rapids, Traverse City, Lansing, Marquette, or anywhere in between, the loss of routine that comes with summer break can present unexpected mental health challenges for adolescents.

The good news? Understanding why summer can be difficult is one of the best ways to help your teen navigate it successfully.

The Surprising Power of Routine

During the school year, teens have built-in structure.

Wake up.

Go to school.

See friends.

Participate in activities.

Complete assignments.

Go to bed.

Summer changes all of that.

Without realizing it, many teens lose the routines that support emotional regulation.

Research consistently demonstrates that predictable schedules contribute to a sense of safety and stability for children and adolescents. Consistent sleep patterns, regular meals, social interaction, and meaningful activities support both physical and emotional well-being.1

When those anchors disappear, some teens struggle more than parents expect.

That doesn’t mean every teen needs a color-coded itinerary worthy of a NASA launch schedule.

But some structure matters.

“But They Were Looking Forward to Summer…”

Absolutely.

Many teens genuinely love summer break.

Yet excitement and stress can coexist.

Without school, teens may experience:

Increased loneliness and social isolation

Changes in sleep schedules

Excessive screen time

More opportunities for social comparison

Less physical activity

Heightened anxiety about friendships and fitting in

Increased exposure to peer pressure

Greater opportunities for substance experimentation

In other words, paying attention matters.

Even when your teenager insists that absolutely nothing is wrong while simultaneously sighing dramatically from the couch.

The “I’m Bored” Dilemma

Let’s talk about boredom.

Boredom itself isn’t the enemy.

In fact, unstructured time can foster creativity, independence, and problem-solving.2

But chronic boredom paired with isolation, impulsivity, or poor coping skills can become problematic.

Summer can increase opportunities for experimentation, especially when teens have:

Greater independence

Less supervision

Increased access to peers

Fewer structured commitments

This doesn’t mean parents should panic every time their teen asks to hang out with friends.

It does mean staying engaged, curious, and connected.

Think less FBI interrogation.

More coffee-shop conversation.

Signs Your Teen May Be Struggling

Adolescence naturally comes with mood swings, eye rolls, and occasional declarations that you’re ruining their life by asking them to unload the dishwasher.

But some changes deserve closer attention.

Watch for:

Withdrawal from family or friends

Increased irritability or anger

Persistent sadness

Significant changes in sleep habits

Loss of interest in activities they previously enjoyed

Changes in appetite

Declining motivation

Increased secrecy

Substance use concerns

Expressions of hopelessness

Trust your instincts.

You know your child better than anyone else.

If something feels different, it’s worth exploring.

Introducing: The Parent’s Summer Survival Guide

Think of it as the parenting equivalent of sunscreen.

It’s much easier to apply before you’re dealing with the burn.

Parents: Don’t Forget to Check In With Yourself, Too

Here’s something we don’t talk about enough:

While parents are busy managing changing routines, monitoring technology use, coordinating schedules, and supporting their teens through summer challenges, many are quietly running on empty themselves.

The truth is, caring for your own mental health isn’t separate from supporting your child’s well-being.

It’s part of it.

That’s why River’s Bend also created the Mid-Year Mental Wellness Reset Workbook, a free resource designed specifically for adults who may be experiencing emotional fatigue, burnout, changing family roles, or the complicated emotions that often accompany raising older children and preparing for new seasons of life.

If you’re preparing to send a teen off to college, adjusting to an empty nest, or simply realizing that you’ve spent years prioritizing everyone else’s needs before your own, this workbook offers practical tools to help you pause, reflect, and recenter.

Inside you’ll find:

Reflection prompts

A burnout self-check

Goal reset exercises

Self-care planning tools

Guidance on recognizing when additional support may be helpful

Because the adults in the family deserve support, too.

If You’re Supporting Everyone Else, Read This Next

Many parents discover that summer isn’t only difficult for teens.

It can be challenging for adults, too.

Especially those navigating milestones such as:

Sending a child to college

Becoming an empty nester

Caring for aging parents

Managing changing family roles

Balancing career demands while supporting growing children

If this season has you wondering, “Who am I now that my kids don’t need me in the same way?” you’re not alone.

Be sure to read:

Mid-Year Mental Health Check: Signs It’s Time to Recenter

This companion article explores emotional fatigue, identity shifts, and practical ways adults throughout Michigan can prioritize their own mental wellness during seasons of transition.

Because healthy families begin with healthy individuals.

When Additional Support Is Needed

Seeking help doesn’t mean you’ve failed as a parent.

It means you’re paying attention.

Many families benefit from professional support during transitional periods like summer, especially when concerns about anxiety, depression, emotional regulation, or substance use arise.

At River’s Bend, our team understands the unique challenges adolescents and families face.

Through our Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), we provide integrated treatment for teens experiencing co-occurring mental health and substance use concerns through a developmentally appropriate, evidence-based approach.

We also offer Mental Health IOP, Substance Use Disorder IOP, Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), and flexible treatment options designed to support adults and families wherever they are in their journey.

You Don’t Have to Navigate Summer Alone

Summer doesn’t have to be perfect.

Your teen doesn’t need to be busy every minute.

And you don’t have to have all the answers.

Sometimes, the most important thing we can offer our children is consistency, connection, and the willingness to ask for help when it’s needed.

So here’s your permission slip for this summer:

Lower the pressure.

Celebrate the small wins.

Keep the lines of communication open.

And remember that healing, growth, and resilience rarely happen in picture-perfect moments.

Sometimes they happen somewhere between the snack wrappers, late-night conversations, and reminders to please, for the love of all things holy, put your wet towel in the hamper.

Download the free Parent’s Summer Survival Guide for practical tools, conversation starters, and strategies designed to help families navigate this season with confidence.

And while you’re at it, take a few minutes for yourself with our Mid-Year Mental Wellness Reset Workbook, a brief reflection tool created for adults who may need permission to pause, recenter, and prioritize their own well-being.

Because supporting your children and supporting yourself aren’t competing priorities.

They’re both investments in your family’s health.

A Partnership Built on Continuity of Care

At River’s Bend, one of our most important responsibilities is helping clients find the right care, which is why we partner with trusted programs like Liberty House Recovery Center.

While we specialize in outpatient behavioral healthcare, we also recognize that recovery is rarely a straight line. Sometimes an individual needs a higher level of care than we provide. Other times, someone is transitioning back into the community after residential treatment and needs continued support to maintain momentum in recovery.

That’s why we invest heavily in building relationships with trusted providers throughout Michigan. We don’t simply hand someone a referral list and wish them well. We spend time getting to know the people behind the programs, understanding their clinical philosophy, touring facilities, and developing the kind of professional relationships that allow for meaningful collaboration on behalf of our clients.

Inside Our Recent Visit

Recently, members of the River’s Bend team spent several hours at Liberty House Recovery Center, touring the facility, meeting staff, and engaging in an in-depth discussion about addiction treatment, recovery, and the importance of continuity of care. During our visit, we were welcomed by Daniel Casey, Co-Founder and Director of Admissions, Adam Jaenicke, Director of Business Development, and many members of the Liberty House team. We also sat down for an extended conversation with Dr. Ashley Casey, LLMSW, CAADC-DP, Co-Founder and Program Director, whose passion for improving addiction treatment was evident throughout our discussion. Along the way, we met professionals from across the organization, including Executive Chef Lauren Cheyne and Director of Housekeeping Falon Cleary, an experience that reinforced how every role contributes to the healing environment Liberty House strives to create.

What emerged from our visit was not simply a description of a treatment facility, but a philosophy of care centered on individualized treatment, clinical excellence, and the belief that recovery should never feel transactional.

A Different Kind of Treatment Environment

Liberty House Recovery Center provides inpatient addiction treatment in a fully licensed medical setting, offering detoxification services, therapy, psychiatric support, and around-the-clock medical care. But what stood out most during our visit was not simply the clinical programming, it was the intentionality behind it.

Dr. Ashley described how nearly every aspect of the environment was designed with patient experience in mind.

“Our goal is helping people become healthy and stable long-term,” she explained. “Everything—from the treatment philosophy to the environment itself—is built around improving outcomes and helping people actually sustain recovery.”

The setting reflects that philosophy. Thoughtfully designed and welcoming without feeling institutional, Liberty House Recovery Center intentionally moves away from the sterile atmosphere many people associate with inpatient addiction treatment.

That matters more than many realize.

Addiction treatment often begins during one of the most vulnerable moments in a person’s life. Fear, shame, uncertainty, and exhaustion frequently accompany the clinical symptoms themselves. A supportive environment cannot solve addiction on its own, but it can help people feel safe enough to begin the work.

A Personal Journey That Shaped a Mission

Part of what makes Liberty House Recovery Center feel so personal may stem from Dr. Ashley’s own path into behavioral healthcare.

Before entering the field of psychology and addiction treatment, Dr. Ashley was practicing as a physician when a life-altering health emergency led to an extended hospitalization and her own experience in therapy. That journey ultimately sparked a passion for understanding mental health and the deeper issues that often underlie substance use disorders.

As Dr. Ashley continued to research and further her understanding of mental health, she became increasingly aware of how difficult it could be to find treatment programs that addressed the whole person rather than simply managing symptoms.

“Addiction touches everybody in some way,” Dr. Ashley told us. “What we kept seeing was that people needed more individualized care and more meaningful support—not just another revolving door experience.”

That perspective helped shape the vision behind Liberty House Recovery Center and continues to influence its clinical approach today.

Treating the Whole Person

One of the strongest themes throughout our conversation was the importance of looking beyond substance use itself.

Liberty House Recovery Center incorporates a variety of evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, and trauma-focused therapies such as EMDR.

But treatment extends well beyond traditional therapy sessions.

Patients are encouraged to develop practical life skills, improve emotional regulation, explore wellness practices, and build healthier daily routines. Nutrition, exercise, mindfulness, yoga, acupuncture, and other supportive therapies are integrated into the treatment experience.

Dr. Ashley spoke candidly about the reality that addiction often develops alongside unresolved emotional pain, chronic stress, trauma, or unhealthy coping patterns.

“A lot of people already know coping skills,” she explained. “What’s often harder is understanding the emotional barriers, the unresolved trauma, or the patterns that continue pulling them back into substance use.”

This comprehensive approach reflects what addiction specialists increasingly recognize: sustainable recovery often requires addressing mental health, trauma, relationships, identity, and lifestyle, not simply stopping the substance itself.

Family Involvement Matters

Another aspect of Liberty House Recovery Center that stood out during our visit was its emphasis on family involvement.

Addiction rarely affects only one person. Family members often arrive carrying their own frustration, fear, confusion, and exhaustion. Ashley emphasized that education plays a critical role in helping loved ones become effective sources of support.

“A lot of family members don’t understand addiction,” she said. “Part of treatment is helping families learn communication strategies, boundaries, and what support actually looks like.”

Rather than waiting until discharge to reconnect families, Liberty House encourages ongoing involvement throughout treatment. This allows loved ones to witness progress gradually and gain a better understanding of the recovery process.

More Than a Referral: A Commitment to Finding the Right Care

One theme that emerged repeatedly during our visit was the importance of matching people with the care that best fits their needs.

At River’s Bend, we view ourselves as more than an outpatient treatment provider. We strive to be a trusted resource for clients and families navigating a behavioral healthcare system that can often feel confusing and fragmented.

Sometimes that means recommending a River’s Bend program. Other times it means helping someone access detoxification, residential treatment, inpatient psychiatric care, or specialized services elsewhere.

Our goal is always the same: helping individuals access the care that gives them the greatest opportunity for success.

That philosophy is one reason partnerships like the one we have developed with Liberty House Recovery Center are so valuable. Because our teams know each other well, communication happens directly and efficiently. Clinical information can be shared appropriately, treatment recommendations can be discussed, and transitions can be coordinated in ways that help reduce stress for both clients and families.

When a River’s Bend client needs residential addiction treatment, we want to know exactly who will be caring for them. Likewise, when someone completes treatment at Liberty House Recovery Center and is ready for outpatient support, their team wants confidence that the next provider will continue building on the progress already achieved.

Recovery is challenging enough without forcing patients to navigate disconnected systems of care. Strong professional partnerships help create a smoother path forward.

Why Liberty House Recovery Center Continues to Refer to River’s Bend

Like many high-quality residential programs, Liberty House Recovery Center recognizes that discharge is not the finish line.

Recovery continues long after inpatient treatment ends, which is why continuity of care plays such an important role in patient outcomes. For many individuals leaving Liberty House Recovery Center, that next phase includes outpatient treatment through River’s Bend.

Dr. Ashley spoke candidly about why Liberty House Recovery Center continues referring patients to River’s Bend after discharge.

“One of the biggest things we look at is client feedback after treatment,” she explained. “When clients consistently tell us they feel engaged, supported, connected to their therapist, and like they’re building a real support system, that tells us we’re sending them to the right place.”

She noted that River’s Bend has consistently stood out because patients report feeling genuinely connected to their care after transitioning from inpatient treatment.

That level of trust matters.

Transitions between levels of care can often feel destabilizing for patients. Entering a new environment, retelling painful experiences, and rebuilding therapeutic relationships all take emotional energy. Strong partnerships between providers help reduce those barriers and create a more seamless recovery experience.

Recovery With Humanity at the Center

Perhaps the most striking part of our visit to Liberty House Recovery Center was not any single therapy model or treatment philosophy, it was the consistency of purpose behind the program.

Throughout our conversation, Dr. Ashley returned repeatedly to one central idea: people deserve thoughtful, individualized care.

She spoke about helping patients who may be struggling professionally, emotionally, or privately behind the scenes. She spoke about wanting treatment to feel human rather than transactional. And she spoke about measuring success not by volume, but by whether people are actually doing better months after treatment ends.

That philosophy aligns closely with River’s Bend’s own belief that recovery works best when people feel seen, respected, and genuinely supported.

A Connected Path Forward

No single provider can meet every need across the recovery journey. The strongest behavioral healthcare systems are built through collaboration; through organizations willing to communicate, coordinate, and put patient outcomes ahead of organizational boundaries.

That commitment is one of the reasons River’s Bend invests so much time in relationships with providers like Liberty House Recovery Center. By visiting facilities, understanding treatment philosophies, building relationships with leadership teams, and maintaining open lines of communication, we can help ensure that clients receive the right care at the right time.

Our visit to Liberty House Recovery Center left us impressed not only by the facility itself, but by the people behind it. From leadership to clinical staff to support personnel, we encountered a team focused on creating an environment where recovery can take root and grow.

For individuals and families facing substance use challenges, that’s what effective care should look like: thoughtful, coordinated, compassionate, and connected.

And for River’s Bend, helping clients find and access that level of care—whether it’s with us or one of our trusted partners—will always remain part of our mission.

One of the phrases I use often is “at River’s Bend, we treat the whole person.” It’s more than a tagline. It is the foundation of how we have approached mental health and substance use treatment since opening our doors in 1995.

As a clinician and co-owner, I spent much of April and May speaking with community groups, hospital teams, therapists, school counselors, and healthcare professionals throughout Metro Detroit. In every conversation, one truth continued to emerge: lasting recovery rarely happens in isolation.

Whole person healing happens in community.

When someone reaches out for help, they are not simply dealing with a diagnosis. They are often carrying emotional pain, family stress, relationship challenges, work pressures, and, in many cases, the stigma that still surrounds mental health and addiction treatment. To truly support recovery, we must address the full context of a person’s life, not just their symptoms.

That is what whole-person care means at River’s Bend.

Whole-person behavioral healthcare recognizes that mental health, substance use, physical health, family dynamics, and social support are deeply interconnected.

For example, someone struggling with anxiety may also be coping with alcohol misuse, unresolved trauma, and strained relationships. Treating only one issue in isolation can leave important needs unmet.

Our personalized and evidence-based programs—including mental health and substance use disorder Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), and specialized services for adolescents—are designed to address these overlapping concerns in an integrated, compassionate way.

We don’t ask, “What’s wrong with you?”

We ask, “What has happened to you, and what support do you need to heal?”

Reducing the Stigma Around Getting Help

One of the biggest barriers to recovery is the belief that asking for help is a sign of weakness.

I have spent nearly three decades working with individuals and families in crisis, and I can tell you with certainty that seeking treatment is an act of courage. It reflects hope, insight, and a willingness to move toward something better.

Our staff and clinicians work every day to normalize conversations about depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction because many of us have suffered personally or stood next to family members. We want people to know they are not alone and that healing is possible.

Why Healing Happens in Community

Recovery is strengthened when people feel connected and supported.

That support may come from therapists, psychiatrists, physicians, family members, peer groups, school counselors, interventionists, or discharge planners. Each plays a vital role in helping someone stay engaged in treatment and continue progressing.

This is why River’s Bend invests significant time and energy into building relationships with trusted professionals and organizations (Link to on the road professional partners tour). We believe the strongest outcomes occur when providers collaborate rather than operate in silos.

Over the past two months, I’ve had the privilege of meeting with many of these partners. These conversations reaffirmed our shared commitment to creating a continuum of care that catches people before they fall through the cracks.

Building a Web of Support

Mental health recovery is not linear. People may need different levels of care at different times.

Our role is to provide a dependable bridge, whether someone is stepping down from inpatient treatment, transitioning from detox, or realizing that weekly therapy alone is not enough.

By coordinating closely with referral partners and families, we help clients access the right care at the right time.

That is what treating the whole person looks like in practice.

You Don’t Have to Heal Alone

At River’s Bend, we believe every individual deserves dignified, evidence-based care that addresses their unique story and surrounds them with meaningful support.

When people lean into help, they discover something powerful: healing does not happen alone.

It happens in community.

Each June, during PTSD Awareness Month, we recognize that trauma does not simply fade with time. For many people, recovery is an ongoing process of learning to feel safe again, rebuilding trust, and finding ways to move forward without being controlled by the past.

This year, public attention around the recent hantavirus cases has renewed conversations about infectious disease and uncertainty. 1While the risk to the general public remains low, headlines about emerging health threats can stir intense emotional reactions, especially for those who lived through traumatic experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic.2

For frontline healthcare workers, first responders, and others who endured the relentless stress of COVID-19, these news stories can reopen wounds that never fully healed.

At River’s Bend, we want people to know that these reactions are understandable, and recovery is possible with the right support.

How Current Events Can Reactivate Trauma

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) develops after exposure to traumatic events involving serious threat, injury, or death. Symptoms can include intrusive memories, nightmares, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, avoidance, and changes in mood and concentration.3

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, PTSD can occur after a single traumatic event or prolonged exposure to repeated stress. Healthcare professionals who worked through the pandemic often faced both: witnessing death, fearing infection, coping with staffing shortages, and making emotionally exhausting decisions day after day.

When new health scares dominate the news cycle, they can trigger:

Racing thoughts and catastrophic thinking

Difficulty sleeping

Increased irritability or emotional numbness

Physical symptoms such as a rapid heartbeat or muscle tension

Urges to withdraw or avoid reminders of past experiences

PTSD symptoms may intensify when individuals encounter reminders that resemble the original trauma.

The Hidden Impact on Frontline Workers

Throughout COVID-19, physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, emergency personnel, and behavioral health clinicians were repeatedly exposed to loss and moral distress. Multiple researchers have documented elevated rates of PTSD, depression, anxiety, and burnout among healthcare workers.4

Many professionals continued functioning at a high level despite carrying unresolved trauma. Years later, a breaking news alert, a patient with respiratory symptoms, or even the smell of disinfectant may evoke memories of those experiences.

These reactions are not signs of weakness. They are evidence that the nervous system is still working to protect against perceived danger.

What PTSD Recovery Looks Like

Recovery does not mean erasing difficult memories. It means reducing the power those memories have over your daily life.

Evidence-based treatments shown to be effective include:

Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) – LINK TO EMDR blog

Medication management when clinically appropriate

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs National Center for PTSD emphasizes that most people with PTSD can experience significant improvement with professional treatment.

At River’s Bend, our Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides structured, evidence-based care for individuals coping with PTSD, anxiety, depression, and co-occurring conditions. IOP offers a higher level of support than traditional weekly therapy while allowing clients to continue living at home and maintaining responsibilities.

Practical Strategies for Managing Triggers

When current events reactivate trauma, these coping strategies can help:

Limit News Exposure

Stay informed through reliable sources, but avoid constant monitoring of headlines and social media updates.

Reconnect With the Present

Grounding exercises, deep breathing, and mindfulness can help remind your brain and body that you are safe now.

Maintain Daily Structure

Consistent sleep, movement, meals, and routines support emotional regulation.

Talk About What You’re Experiencing

Sharing reactions with a therapist or trusted support person can reduce isolation and help process emotions.

Seek Professional Help Early

If symptoms interfere with sleep, relationships, work, or overall functioning, specialized treatment can make a substantial difference.

These approaches align with our June focus on practical coping strategies and the role of structured treatment in long-term recovery.

Contact Our Care Team for Help

Healing Is Not Linear

You will often hear our therapists say “trauma recovery rarely follows a straight path.” It is true! Periods of progress may be interrupted by setbacks, especially when external events stir old fears.

That does not mean treatment is failing.

Recovery often involves learning to recognize triggers sooner, respond more effectively, and rebuild confidence over time. Small improvements—sleeping better, feeling less on edge, or engaging more fully with loved ones—can be meaningful signs of healing.

You Do Not Have to Navigate PTSD Alone

Whether you are a nurse haunted by memories of the pandemic, a first responder struggling with recurring anxiety, or someone whose trauma is resurfacing amid unsettling headlines, support is available.

River’s Bend has provided compassionate, evidence-based behavioral healthcare since 1995. Our outpatient programs are designed to help individuals move from surviving to living more fully.

If this topic resonates with you, explore our resource page or contact our care team for help.

PTSD is treatable. Recovery is real. And even when the world feels uncertain, healing remains possible.

Every June, Pride Month honors the history, resilience, and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other LGBTQ+ individuals. It is a time to celebrate authenticity, raise awareness about ongoing challenges, and reaffirm the importance of acceptance and belonging.

Pride Month began in remembrance of the 1969 Stonewall Riots, a pivotal moment in the movement for LGBTQ+ rights.1 Today, Pride is both a celebration and a reminder that many LGBTQ+ individuals continue to face stigma, discrimination, and barriers to mental health care.

Why Pride Month Matters for Mental Health

Research consistently shows that LGBTQ+ individuals experience higher rates of anxiety, depression, substance use disorders, and suicidal thoughts compared to the general population. According to The Trevor Project, LGBTQ+ young people are significantly more likely to consider suicide, especially when they lack supportive environments.2

These disparities are not caused by sexual orientation or gender identity themselves. Rather, they are linked to experiences such as rejection, bullying, social isolation, and discrimination.3

The good news is that support makes a profound difference.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that acceptance from family, peers, schools, and communities can greatly reduce suicide risk and improve overall well-being.4

Why Pride Is Especially Important for Young People

Adolescence and young adulthood are periods of identity development, social comparison, and emotional growth. LGBTQ+ youth may face additional stress when they fear rejection or feel pressured to hide important parts of themselves.

Pride Month sends a powerful message: You belong. You are valued. Your identity deserves respect.

Even small gestures of support can help young people feel safer and less alone.

Small Ways to Show Support This June

Bruce Goldberg, River’s Bend President and co-owner, is a firm believer that healing from mental health and substance use disorders happens in community. Whether you identify as LGBTQ+ or not, there are meaningful ways to help lift others up.

Use a person’s chosen name and pronouns.

Listen without judgment.

Display a Pride flag or supportive message.

Speak up against hurtful comments.

Learn more about LGBTQ+ experiences.

Check in with a young person who may be struggling.

Share mental health resources and affirming support options.

These actions may seem simple, but they communicate acceptance and belonging.

When Community Supports Healing

Whether someone is managing anxiety, depression, trauma, or substance use, feeling connected to others is a powerful protective factor. Recovery is more sustainable when individuals know they are accepted and supported.

Pride Month reminds us that everyone deserves to be seen, respected, and encouraged.

Find Compassionate Support at River’s Bend

River’s Bend provides evidence-based outpatient treatment for mental health and substance use disorders in Troy and West Bloomfield, Michigan, with virtual options available throughout Michigan.

This June, let’s celebrate the strength of the LGBTQ+ community and remember that healing is possible when people feel safe, supported, and connected.

As Michigan began to shake off the final chill of winter, members of the River’s Bend leadership team set out on a meaningful journey across southeast Michigan. The day before the April P4P Day Conference, Bruce Goldberg, President and Co-Owner; Amy Fresch, Troy Clinical Director; Cheryl Narduzzi, Business Development Liaison; and Erica Brown, Marketing Director, traveled together to visit three exceptional treatment providers: Metropolitan Behavioral Health, Liberty House Recovery Center, and Henry Ford Maplegrove Center.

The purpose of the trip was simple but important: to better understand and help demystify the continuum of care for mental health and substance use disorder treatment in Michigan. By seeing these facilities firsthand, our leadership team gained valuable insight into the services patients may need before transitioning to outpatient programs like those offered at River’s Bend.

More importantly, the experience reinforced the power of strong professional partnerships in ensuring that individuals and families receive the right care at the right time.

Springtime on the Road in Michigan

There is something uniquely hopeful about Michigan in Springtime. As our leadership team traveled from one facility to the next, the landscape reflected the same sense of renewal that recovery often brings.

The roads wound through vibrant Detroit suburbs and tree-lined neighborhoods just beginning to turn green. Flowering trees were budding, daffodils brightened residential lawns, and sunlight filtered through soft spring rain clouds. After a long Midwestern winter, the season offered a visible reminder that growth and healing are always possible.

First Stop: Metropolitan Behavioral Health

Our first destination was Metropolitan Behavioral Health, a specialized inpatient psychiatric hospital that provides acute stabilization for adolescents, adults, and older adults.

For individuals experiencing severe depression, suicidal thoughts, psychosis, or other mental health crises, Metropolitan offers 24/7 psychiatric care in a structured and supportive environment. Patients receive medication management, individual therapy, and group treatment, with typical stays lasting seven to fourteen days.

What impressed our team most was Metropolitan’s commitment to continuity of care. Every patient leaves with follow-up appointments scheduled and a clear discharge plan in place. Their staff works closely with community providers like River’s Bend to ensure that treatment continues seamlessly after hospitalization.

For Bruce, Amy, Cheryl, and Erica, touring the facility with Susan Thomas, Chief Operating Officer, helped remove uncertainty around inpatient psychiatric treatment and provided a clearer picture of what patients experience when they need this level of care.

Second Stop: Liberty House Recovery Center

Our next stop was Liberty House Recovery Center, where we met with Dr. Ashley Casey, Co-Founder and Program Director.

Liberty House is a family-owned residential addiction treatment center built on a mission to improve clinical outcomes and break the cycle of repeated treatment episodes that many individuals experience.

The program combines medical detox and psychiatric care with evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, EMDR, and trauma-focused treatment. Clients also benefit from holistic services including yoga, acupuncture, massage therapy, cooking classes, and life skills training.

One aspect that stood out to our team was Liberty House’s ability to support working professionals, allowing clients to maintain critical responsibilities while engaging in intensive treatment. The facility’s thoughtfully designed environment balances clinical excellence with warmth and comfort.

The visit highlighted how individualized and innovative treatment can help people build a stronger foundation for lifelong recovery.

Final Stop: Henry Ford Maplegrove Center

The final destination on our journey was Henry Ford Maplegrove Center. Indeed, this is one of the most respected names in addiction treatment in the Midwest.

For more than 40 years, Maplegrove has offered a full continuum of substance use disorder treatment. This includes medical detoxification, residential care, and medication-assisted treatment. In addition, they provide therapy and family support services.

During our visit, Christine Reeves, LMSW, shared how Maplegrove tailors treatment to each patient’s needs. Notably, she places great importance on collaboration with trusted referral partners. Her message resonated deeply. In her experience, patients feel more confident moving to the next level of care when they know their providers trust one another.

That philosophy aligns perfectly with River’s Bend’s approach. By all means, building strong relationships with organizations like Maplegrove helps everyone. We can confidently guide patients into the next phase of treatment. As a consequence, we can continue supporting them as they transition back into daily life.

Why These Partnerships Matter

River’s Bend clinicians and staff understand that recovery rarely follows a straight line. Some individuals begin with outpatient therapy, while others may require inpatient psychiatric stabilization, medical detox, or residential addiction treatment before moving to Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) or Mental Health or Substance Use Disorder Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP).

The challenge is not a lack of resources. As Bruce Goldberg often says, the real issue is that many people simply do not know what resources exist or how they fit together.

This field trip helped our leadership team see that continuum of care more clearly. By visiting these facilities, meeting their staff, and learning about their treatment philosophies, we strengthened the relationships that make coordinated care possible.

When providers know and trust one another, patients experience smoother transitions, reduced stress, and greater confidence that they are receiving the right level of care.

A Day of Learning, Collaboration, and Connection

For Bruce, Amy, Cheryl, and Erica, the trip was both educational and energizing. In addition to touring impressive facilities and meeting passionate professionals, the day offered an opportunity to connect as a team and share ideas about how River’s Bend can continue improving the patient experience.

It reinforced the knowledge that our clients and their families are never navigating treatment alone. Through strong partnerships with Metropolitan Behavioral Health, Liberty House Recovery Center, and Henry Ford Maplegrove Center, we are proud to help illuminate the path forward, one relationship, one referral, and one recovery journey at a time.
