Delighted that following my freight crime campaign the government are trialling a new tagging system to help the police tackle this organised criminality.
Thank you @LabourSJ for your ongoing support for this vital industry.
The Labour government has returned 9,400 people with no right to be in the UK - including 2,590 enforced returns, an increase of 19% on the same period in 2023.
This is a Government that takes illegal immigration seriously, if there is no right to be here, they will be deported.
I'm delighted the government has accepted my amendment to make hate crimes against LGBT+ and disabled people aggravated offences, and will now table an amendment in the House of Lords to make it happen. Here's a bit of my speech on why this change is so important:
1/ Today’s @CommonsWEC session with the @EHRC will not have satisfied trans people that the EHRC understands their concerns, let alone wants to address them. It’s astonishing in this answer that the Chair said trans people have no reason to be worried and haven’t lost rights. 🧵
Inspired by today's @Keir_Starmer speech, just as when I heard him speak @SarahEdwardsTam byelection win. Today he recognised the hard work, service, volunteers and community groups that hold our country together. Proud to be part of @UKLabour doing our bit #GeneralElectionN0W
My letter in the Guardian about why the @EHRC's guidance on sex and gender is unworkable and goes far beyond what the Supreme Court judgement actually said.
4/ Some of the interim guidance that has been issued is obviously absurd. Just look at the muddle the Chair got herself into trying to avoid answering my question about whether it’s the @EHRC’s view that it’s illegal to start a trans-inclusive women’s walking group.
In my maiden speech this week I flew the flag for LGBT equality, the progress we have already made, and the progress this Labour government has pledged to deliver. 1/4 🧵
5/ These are deeply complex and sensitive issues, but the answers I heard today were far from satisfactory. Trans people deserve better than to have their concerns ignored by our National Human Rights organisation.
Fantastic to meet the Prime Minister today to discuss the challenges facing North Warwickshire and Bedworth, and how we can deliver Labour’s plan for a decade of national renewal.
I’ve tabled NC122 to the Crime and Policing Bill to make hate crimes against people because of their sexual orientation, transgender identity or disability an aggravated offence. We must treat these offences with the seriousness they deserve. Please ask your MP to sign NC122.
1/ The recent Supreme Court ruling and the @EHRC’s interim Code of Practice has caused real concern for trans and non-binary people, including for constituents who have reached out to me. A quick🧵:
