Yesterday, an elected official asked me if my cane was “for show.”
Years ago that comment - in the midst of a work event in front of others - would’ve embarrassed and upset me. Now it angers me beyond words at those we elect & knowing how many of us deal with this everyday.

- I’m waiting for the @MTA to stop pretending those cameras not working are an outlier. From my accident & other shitty moments on the subway following it, I learned the truth about our transit system: there are no working camera in a majority of stations
- This is an example of how ingrained ableism is in society & here it’s coupled w/ ageism. Mobility aids are used by millions of Americans everyday, myself included. Showing people using mobility aids as a negative thing that makes them “incapable” of doing the job harms us all.The New Yorker cover (And the cover story) newyorker.com/culture/cover-…
- Last night a Senator greeted me, looked down at my cane and joked, “Is that for self defense?” Just now another Senator - who has seen me with a cane for years now - started a meeting by pointing to my cane and asking how my recovery is going. You all are exhausting me.
- More personally, showing elected officials using mobility aids and/or being disabled as a way to illustrate that they cannot or should not be in that role is hurtful & keeps disabled people from not just running for office, but being a part of public life. Do better, @NewYorker.The New Yorker cover (And the cover story) newyorker.com/culture/cover-…
- Can we please get a @NGPVAN system update so buildings are tagged #ADA-accessible? I’m asking for myself & every other disabled candidate/volunteer that sees a flight of stairs & either can’t do them or sacrifices their well-being to get up them to talk to voters. #CripTheVote
- Sorry not sorry - I’m happy with this decision on #CongestionPricing. There was little to no care for the impact this policy will have on disabled NYers. We need more accessible subways & buses before we start forcing NYers to use the largely inaccessible public transit system.Hochul considering congestion pricing delay amid concerns from Democratic leaders ow.ly/qnTW105vB4EReaders added context they thought people might want to knowReaders added contextCongestion charge revenue was planned to be used to improve the transit system, including accessibility upgrades. - THREAD: Today is the 7th anniversary of my subway accident. It's a day that forever changed my life and made me want to fight not just for myself, but for all of us. (1/3) #AccessibilityForAll #ADA #MidtownEast #UpperEastSide #EastHarlem #RooseveltIsland #NYC #RebeccaForNewYork
00:00 - 🧵Today there was an unnerving moment while campaigning. A man followed me around the community & I didn’t notice I was being followed until 74th St. when he popped out in front of me asking if my cane was a weapon I’d use on him if he “got close" to me. (1/6)
- Being a #disabled candidate is an exercise in patience & preparation. The patience is for the intrusive & disrespectful questions & jokes. Example from tonight: “What’s that for (my cane)? If you can’t walk, should you run?” It was a joke to them but not to me. #CripTheVote
- When your ableism makes you feel entitled to verbally abuse a person legally operating a vehicle for those who cannot rely on our public transit system - or ride a bicycle for that matter.Episode 16: This is the mentality that TransAlt and others have enabled, a cyclist screaming at an ACCESS A RIDE van out of all things to move. This needs to stop.

- I just walked by a group of 5 police officers, 2 of which were smoking cigars hanging out on a Saturday night *while working*. One of the officers smoking sees me w/ my cane and asked, “Are you a pimp with that cane?” Ask me again why we need to #DefundThePolice...
