AMS believes the criticism of the Birmingham forecast office is unwarranted; rather they should have been commended for their quick action based on science in clearly communicating the lack of threat to the citizens of Alabama.

A #BulletinAMS paper suggests the 10-year “drought” of the strongest (EF5) tornadoes is likely due to stricter use of ratings, not changes in tornadoes. Compared w/the older Fujita scale, the Enhanced Fujita (EF) scale makes it harder to qualify as an EF5: bit.ly/43aIIYr
