Our Sun is waking up! Region 4473 has been popping off some low level flares over the last 24 hours, but finally it's gotten some teeth with an M6.9-flare! We peaked at an R2-level Radio Blackout, which is calming slowly. Radio operators on the sunlit side of Earth expect HF/VHF

Direct Hit! A snake-like filament launched as a big #solarstorm while in the Earth-strike zone. NASA predicts impact early July 19. Strong #aurora shows possible with this one, deep into mid-latitudes. Amateur #radio & #GPS users expect signal disruptions on Earth's nightside.

Talk about Polar Vortex! Material from a northern prominence just broke away from the main filament & is now circulating in a massive polar vortex around the north pole of our Star. Implications for understanding the Sun's atmospheric dynamics above 55° here cannot be overstated!

A Direct Hit! The impressive #solarstorm launched in the Earth-strike zone has been modeled by NASA. The storm is predicted to hit Earth by midday December 1. Along with two earlier storms already en route means we have a 1,2,3-punch. If the magnetic field is oriented correctly,

Incredibly bright red & magenta #aurora graces the skies over New Zealand now due to the impact of the first #solrstorm in this series. Expect views to sporadically brighten & dim as we travel through the "turbulent" outer envelope of this fast-moving storm. Thanks for reporting!

According to Hp30 (this is an index like Kp, but it averages over 30 minutes instead of 3 hours), we are in a G5 storm. Anything over "9.0" is G5-- we are at "11". Time will tell if this #solarstorm has the punch to cause Kp to reach G5 as well. #SpinalTap references duly noted.

The long snake-like filament cartwheeled its way off the #Sun in a stunning ballet. The magnetic orientation of this Earth-directed #solarstorm is going to tough to predict. G2-level (possibly G3) conditions may occur if the magnetic field of this storm is oriented southward!
