What's D4 in short ?

Built by Infomaniak in Geneva, D4 is a fully underground data centre that recovers 100% of the heat its servers produce and redirects it to warm up to 6,000 homes through the city's district heating network. No traditional cooling. No wasted energy.

Powered entirely by renewable electricity, D4 proves that a data centre doesn't have to be an environmental liability. It can be a net contributor to the communities it operates in.

The full project, including architecture, technology and lessons learned, is documented open source on this website so any organisation or policymaker can replicate it.

Who's behind the construction ?

Infomaniak is a Swiss-based cloud provider founded in 1994. Long before sustainability became an industry talking point, it was already running its data centres without air conditioning, using filtered outdoor air since 2013. D4 is not a one-off experiment. It is the result of over a decade of engineering choices made with environmental impact in mind.
