The Liquidators [U.K.] - Prepare to be Ska'd (2002)

Image
This is not The Liquidators that you know of. Not the California band or the French band. This band was from the U.K. - probably from Devon or the surrounding area.

They performed with Neville Staples and The Selecter and had offers to open for Bad Manners, The Beat, and The Skatalites. They might have actually opened for those bands but there's little to go on to know for sure.

The band played a mix of covers and originals. This 4-track recording demonstrates a bit of both.

The band was (in order on the photo):

Lee Shepherd - guitar

Steve Thorne - vocals

Giles Isaac - bass

Mark Robinson - drums

and the band even played with trumpet player Major Chris Willis from the band Too Hot but this recording has no horns.

This incredible post is thanks to Rikard who recently sent this to me. I haven't posted anything in the last couple of weeks due to an excessive work schedule but this was so good I had to find time to get back to the blog for a few minutes.

Thank you Rikard!

Crucial DBC - Haunted World (1988)

Image

1 Spy Version#

2 Hold On

3 Oppression

4 I Don't Understand

5 Who's Lovin You?

6 King Darry's Rude Boy Rap*

7 Wicked*

8 Right for My Heart

9 Ipso Es Victium

10 Haunted World

# I'm guessing these tracks are not in order of how they were played. At the end of the first track Spy Version he says "Thank you! Good night!" like it was the end of the show. I didn't re-arrange anything, I left it as it is on the tape.

*The song King Darry's Rude Boy Rap flows directly into the song Wicked. I tried separating them but without any real line of demarcation it sounded terrible so I left it as one single track. There are ten songs on this tape but you'll see only nine in the download.

Rudeness Empire - demo tape (1995)

Image
 All three songs on this tape were on the CD but all three are different mixes. The vocals are the exact same but there are variations in the placement of the vocals. Some "chickitup-pickitup" are moved to different bars and in the song "Vampire" the scream isn't there and, instead, there is simply the word "vampire". I don't know which version I like best.

Some sound effects that are on the CD are absent on this recording so, even though the recordings are the same for all three songs these are unique versions not found anywhere else.

The Flys - State of Mine 7" (1985)

Image
 The Medflys was a power pop band from California who released a self-titled tape and then changed their name to The Flys and put out one 7".

 Their song "State of Mine" was kind of their big hit. It was a pseudo-funk new wave tune. It was on the KSJO "Best of the Bay" compilation in 1985 and it was the A-side to their only record.

I haven't heard their tape so I don't know how much they dabbled in the ska sound but the B-side to their only record was a great ska song called "Should've Stayed Home".

 I have heard their demo tape and, surprisingly, they had a full-on ska version of "Wild Thing" which I included in this download.

A - State of Mine

B - Should've Stayed Home

The Lidds - A Ska Outfit (1995)

Image
 The Lidds was a ska band from Philadelphia who were known for not rehearsing in private but every rehearsal they had was open to an audience. Every show they performed was basically a band rehearsal. More bands need to do this.

When I was younger some of the best shows I have ever seen were band rehearsals when the band invited people to watch them rehearse and it always started out for the first hour or so as a serious band rehearsal but morphed into a party a couple hours later.

Ah...the good ol' days.

 This tape is a live recording. I don't think they ever recorded in a studio. This recording is available on Bandcamp but it's not complete. This download here is for the complete tape including "Rudi, a Message to You" and "Rat Race" which are not on the Bandcamp version. "Rudi..." is a cover song but, surprisingly, "Rat Race" is not.

EDIT: I mentioned the EP because I do not have it. I should have mentioned that they had another album called "2". I have a copy of "2" that I downloaded from the intertubes back in the days but I never had a physical copy so I didn't post it. I posted this because I have it and the rips and scans are my own. If anybody wants me to post the files I have from the second album just leave a comment and I'll post it.

Comarec - With a Girl Like You 7" (1977)

Image
 Comarec -or- The Comarec Band was a band from the Netherlands who released this one single. The A-side is an original song and the B-side is a cover of the Box Tops' classic song

Both A and B sides were done in quasi 2-Tone style ska which is more impressive when you realize that this record predates the 1979 ska revival by two years.

B - The Letter

Last Orders - Who Do You Turn To? (1993)

  One of the great lost ska albums. Last Orders were from Norfolk U.K. (Great Yarmouth region) and were a driving force in the mod/scooter movement in the early 90s.

 This album has been lost to the sands of time but it needs to be heard. If you have a YouTube channel or any other social media site please share this album with everybody. Put it put there. Let them get the attention that they deserve.

Allniters - Still in Love (1988)

Image
 There was a time when this song was the "long lost" Allniters song that nobody had. It was released on a compilation of Australian bands called "Export Music Australia Presents Crocodile CD" and the compilation was nearly impossible to find. Especially outside of Australia. Thankfully we live in the future and the internet, and specifically Discogs, turns what was once 'nearly impossible' into a minor pain-in-the-ass.

The song is also readily available on YouTube but the sound quality isn't great. So this download is taken directly from the Crocodile CD.

Here's the version on YouTube that was uploaded by the band.

If you're interested in the whole compilation you can find it HERE.

Big Noise - I Love My Job (1984)

Image
 This was Buford O'Sullivan's band before he was in The New Bohemians which later became The Scofflaws. This is their only ska song. It was on a 4-track 12" from 1984 which, allegedly, only had 10 copies made so it's nearly impossible to find. Thankfully the band released all of their recordings on a compilation called Falling Underground

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I HAVE ALLOWED COMMENTS AGAIN
There is a YouTube channel called Skaville City that posts a lot of rare ska songs.  It's a good channel and I have actually gained a lot of knowledge from that channel. There have been several songs posted on that channel that I didn't know about. I am a subscriber.
But the truth is that channel posts very little original content. The bulk of that channel is things that were taken from other sources. Mostly from other YouTube channels but also from blogs and other online sources.  The arrogant creator of that channel rarely gives credit for the sources for the things that they post. They want you to believe it's all their own doing.
A significant number of things posted on that channel are from Tone and Wave. I think fans of this blog have already seen that. I like that the music is being shared and I don't need any sort of credit for spending my own money on these recordings, spending hours ripping and editing these recordings, or scanning the images and spending time editing these scans. I don't ask for credit for any of these things. It's the bands that deserve the credit.
But for somebody else to come along - sometimes within an hour of a post that I spent many hours on - posting it on their channel and wanting credit for it, it sucks.
Here's some context. The guy who does the Skaville City channel asked if I had anything in his wantlist. I mentioned that I had this record but I had not ripped it yet. On December 6th I told him I'll rip it and post it on the blog in a week or so. Because I have a job and a family and because it is the holiday season and this blog is not the most important thing in my life I didn't quite get around to ripping the record.
So I get these messages. Look at the date and times. This is strange behavior:
Image
Image
Image
Image
I don't quite get all of the references but I have made the joke many times in the past that "I've never been wrong about anything in my life!". That's obviously a joke. Why somebody doesn't recognize that as a joke says more about them than about me.
Anyway, this is not the first time I have had interactions with this weirdo in the past. In fact I get lots of messages like this. This is why I stopped comments on the blog. This is why I stopped Facebook.
I am not a ska expert and I never claimed to be one. I'm just some guy who collects and shares ska music. I've been told plenty of times that I need to correct something wrong that I posted on the blog. The shit I post comes from what I can find on the internet. If it's been on the internet for 22 years and I post it on the blog why the hell would I correct it because one single nobody says that the thing I posted is wrong? They could be right but I don't know and I don't care. I just like the music. That's it. I don't give a shit about the band members and what other thing they did. Most of the time I have interacted with ska musicians they say "Hey, you like that ska I did in the 80s? We'll here's the acoustic guitar singer songwriter horseshit I'm working on now! You should love it!" I don't love it and I don't care.
So here you go Skaville City. I spent the money on this record. I did the rips, the editing, and the scans. So go ahead and post it on your YouTube channel.
I told you before, you idiot, that if you ever start fucking with me again I will publicly post your comments and I will shut Tone and Wave down giving you full credit for the end of this blog.
This is the end. This is the last Tone and Wave post.
12/27/2022 is the 15th anniversary of this blog. I have lots more rarities that I haven't posted yet. Skaville City has made a conscious decision to end this blog. The only way I will continue is if I get a public apology from the asshole who runs Skaville City.
It's been fun. Thank you all for keeping ska music alive!
7 Seconds of Love - Danger is Dangerous (2008)
Image
 This was a British ska band that composed some really mature intelligent ska tunes and mixed those songs equally with some silly stuff.
From what Google is showing I think this is their only release. They did have one song that was on Skannibal Party 9 in 2009 called "Miss U". I have included that track in this download.
This is not my own rip. Either it was sent to me or I got it off a blog many years ago. I'm pretty sure I know who to thank for this but there is a possibility I might name the wrong person so I'll just say thank you to the person who originally ripped this record and was gracious enough to share it!
