Congrats Alex (a brag)!
Alex scored in the 96th percentile on the PSATs, which qualifies him for the National Merit competition. Way to go, Alex!
SATs are this Saturday - please send him your good thoughts!

Kate has joined the computer world
Kate's interest in the computer has really taken off this year, and she now has her own email address (let me know if you want it and I'll send it to you - she loves to get email!). She's at Grammy and Grandpa's today for the holiday, and just sent me this note. I thought I should keep it since it will remind me how often she begins talking with "I need to tell you something."
I need to tell you something. I made a book called "The Power Puffs and the New Girl."
Love,
Kate

Kate turns 6
Kate had a great birthday yesterday, especially celebrating with her friends at Nittany Gymnastics last night. It's good to be 6!
Here are some pictures of all the excitement.

Virginia Trip
I just got back from Roanoke, VA, where I attended my aunt's funeral. As funerals often do, they brought many cousins together who don't normally get to see each other and we enjoyed getting reacquainted. We also got to enjoy a bit of the Blue Mountain Parkway and see Mountain Lake, where Dirty Dancing was filmed. It was great to have the time to celebrate Aunt Glad's life and our family.

First day of 11th grade and kindergarten
What a spread!
Today was Kate's first full day of kindergarten, and she had a great day. Yesterday was just a 1 hour orientation, which in my opinion was a waste of time, if not more harmful than helpful. Kate mostly felt overwhelmed and because parents were there and it was so short, didn't really get a chance to make friends. But today she made 3, 4, 5, 6...new friends (she keeps thinking of more) and told me that while she loves me more than school, she likes school more than me. Guess that's good! She also went to the before/after school program for the first time today. Before school is at the school; after school is at the YMCA. The best part of her day was riding the bus to the Y.
Alex has had an OK start to 11th grade, but not the best. They forgot to schedule a lunch for him - gave him a study hall instead. You'd think that since the study hall is at the same time as lunch that wouldn't be much of a problem, but the study hall teacher is refusing to let the kids go down to the cafeteria. So he's had 2 days of school with no lunch. Tomorrow he actually does not have a lunch because it's his chemistry lab! So, he's going to pack stuff to eat tomorrow and Friday, and has written his guidance counselor to try to get his schedule changed. Crazy!

Last day of Preschool
Today was Kate's last day at Children's House. She seemed to be heading into it pretty well, mostly just excited about starting Kindergarten. But when we picked her up, she was sad (partly because of an issue with one of her friends), but I think the day was a bit overwhelming, too. Especially with visiting the new school last night and seeing how big it is (all of the families were invited to an ice cream social on the playground). Tonight was the YMCA orientation, too, which was a bit boring. She's feeling better now and is in bed, and I'm sure will fall asleep quickly.

Quick update
I've gotten the facebook bug and am spending most of my time over there these days, so sorry for not much of an update here.
Summer seems to be winding down and we're all looking to the fall. Alex has his 11th grade schedule (yikes, can he really be that old??), and is enjoying learning how to drive. He's expanded to major roads, and has even driven on the by-pass. Kate had her kindergarten assessment and that went well - I had no doubt she was ready for kindergarten. There are many things to do to get her ready for kindergarten - we still have an ice cream social at the school later in August, an orientation at the YMCA for the before/after school program, and the first day of school is only an hour long and parents are expected to attend. I still need to make sure the school district knows she'll be riding the bus to the Y (I emailed but with no response). And we need to schedule the fall activities - guitar for Alex, piano/voice for Kate, pilates for me. Gymnastics for Kate is already scheduled. Life will be speeding up, soon!
