The lens features Moisture-Resistant Construction, Fluorine Coating and a Ø67mm filter size – the same as the Tamron series of lenses for full-frame mirrorless cameras. Compatible with many of the features that Sony builds into its cameras, including Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF, the lens is the ideal everyday zoom lens for a multitude of situations. It is a highly practical lens that enables photographers to attain high image quality while enjoying the benefits of the large F2.8 aperture.
From the manufacturer
Expand your photo experience with an advanced standard zoom lens
The 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A* VC RXD (Model B070) is a large aperture everyday zoom lens for Sony E-mount APS-C mirrorless cameras. Fast, sharp, quiet, and small—this new APS-C zoom lens is extraordinarily versatile and perfect for everyday photography. The lens was created to achieve a broad zoom range and excellent image quality with a focal length range of 17-70mm (a full-frame equivalent of 25.5-105mm). The 17-70mm F2.8 standard zoom lens with a 4.1x zoom ratio is ideal for APS-C cameras. The 17-70mm F2.8 includes Tamron's proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation). When shooting video, by utilizing AI technology, image stabilization performance improves compared to conventional models. Designed specifically for use with APS-C mirrorless cameras, the lens is light weight and compact, even with VC. Its small size and versatility make it a great choice for outdoor, travel and vacation photography, where compact camera bags are preferred, and of course for daily use. Additionally, photographers / users can take advantage of a close working distance. It features an MOD (Minimum Object Distance) of 0.19m (7.5 in) at the wide-angle end and 0.39m (15.4 in) at the telephoto end. The lens is equipped with Tamron’s RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) AF drive system, a high-speed, precision stepping motor unit. It also incorporates a wide variety of other features, including Moisture-Resistant Construction and Fluorine Coating for added durability. In your everyday life and on your trips to distant places, this lens captures all the excitement and discoveries with the finest possible detail. *Di III-A is the new designation for Tamron's line of lenses exclusively for APS-C mirrorless cameras.
Tamron 17-70mm F2.8, large aperture standard zoom lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras
Fast F2.8 aperture available throughout the entire zoom range
The 17-70mm F2.8 maintains its large F2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range (unlike variable aperture lenses that darken as you zoom). Thanks to F2.8 and high optical performance, 17-70mm F2.8 allows you to capture your subjects with clear details from wide angle to telephoto. The three main advantages of a large F2.8 aperture are: A) ability to shoot successfully in lower light levels, B) beautiful and dreamy bokeh, and C) better control of depth-of-field which is particularly useful when intentionally limiting depth-of-field to improve portraits by blurring the area behind the main subject. Structurally, the optical formula includes 16 elements in 12 groups. It was created in pursuit of superior optical performance, utilizing an effective allocation of two GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lens elements and one aspherical hybrid lens element. The optical design ensures high resolution and high contrast not just in the center of the frame but also in corners and at the edges.
This versatile zoom lens lets you enjoy shooting in a multitude of genres, from wide-angle scenes to telephoto moments. With a focal length range of 17mm to 70mm (a full-frame equivalent of 25.5-105mm), this large aperture F2.8 standard zoom lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras achieves a 4.1x zoom ratio. It’s ideal for a variety of scenarios, from portraits and street snapshots, to landscapes and even close-ups
The 17-70mm F2.8 is a standard zoom lens that's ideal for not only still photography but also for video shooting. The 17-70mm F2.8 has minimal focus breathing, an undesirable phenomenon in which the angle of view changes depending on the focusing distance during videography. By counteracting focus breathing, the 17-70mm F2.8 empowers users' expression of their creative intentions to the fullest degree. In addition, the quiet RXD AF drive motor and the VC image stabilization mechanism facilitate hand-held video shooting.
The AF drive on the 17-70mm F2.8 includes an RXD motor unit to help you stay focused on the action. RXD uses an actuator to precisely control the rotational angle of the motor, allowing it to directly drive the focusing lens without passing through a reduction gear. A sensor that precisely detects the position of the lens enables high-speed and accurate AF, which is ideal when shooting continually moving subjects or recording video. And with a focusing system that is both smooth and quiet, the 17-70mm F2.8 lets you shoot free from stress not worrying about the drive sound in a quiet environment.
This advanced lens focuses extremely close for a standard zoom lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras. The MOD is just 0.19m (7.5 in) at the wide-angle end and 0.39m (15.4 in) at the telephoto end. When shooting very close to the subject, the lens enables expressive imagery with highly blurred backgrounds, a feature unique to fast-aperture lenses. This allows you to create one-of-a-kind photos of a variety of subjects, from snapshots to portraits, landscapes, and even architectural photography. Close-up shots of your main subjects taken at the 17mm end maximize the unique perspective only true wide-angle lenses can deliver.

Highly recommended for anyone serious about photography or filmmaking.
Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2026This was the very first item on my teenage son’s Christmas list. At first, the price was a bit shocking to me, but after seeing what this lens can do for both photos and video, especially compared to the cameras and lenses his peers use while competing in national film competitions, it was absolutely the right choice.
The clarity and focus instantly elevate even ordinary shots. His very first photo was of our cat, taken in poor lighting, under a table, with shadows from dining chairs. Despite the challenging conditions, the image looked like a professionally captured, high-end portrait worthy of framing. The colors are rich and beautifully enhanced, and the overall quality looks edited straight out of the camera.
He read the manual to understand the functionality and proper focusing techniques. While the lens feels heavy to me, it balances perfectly on his Sony camera, and with a neck strap, it’s no issue for him at all. He was very clear that this was the exact lens he wanted and explained why bundle deals are not ideal, something he thoroughly researched and discussed with his film teacher.
This lens is expensive, but it’s not just a gift; it’s an investment. It’s a tool he will continue to develop his skills with as he works toward a career in film. His Sony camera and this lens were both recommended by his high school broadcast journalism teacher, and I now understand why.
No photos are included because the product looks exactly as pictured. I truly had no idea how much a quality lens could make a difference, and after seeing the results, the value is undeniable.
Highly recommended for anyone serious about photography or filmmaking.
I hinted to my son that he might want to use this to capture senior pictures of his peers, since it has the quality of a professional lens.

Great all around photography lens.
Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2026Price is affordable. The lens is easy to operate, it’s not heavy, it’s very clean looking. It foucuses quickly, it’s easy to transition different zoom levels on the move. This is definitely a great all around photography lens. I keep it on my Sony A7iii as my primary shooting lens. And takes crisp sharp photos!

Great lens with excellent sharpness and fast autofocus
Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2026I’m really happy with this lens. It’s exactly what I expected when I bought it. The image quality is excellent, with very good sharpness across the frame. The autofocus is fast and accurate, which makes it great for both photos and video.
The build quality also feels solid and well made. The focal length range is very practical and covers about 90% of what I usually shoot, so it has quickly become one of my most used lenses.
The only small downside for me is that it’s a bit heavier than I expected. However, the performance easily makes up for that.
Overall, I’m very satisfied with this lens and would definitely recommend it.

Superb wide angle to short tele zoom lens. BIG.
Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2025This Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD lens is a fantastic lens from a performance standpoint. But size-wise it's a bit of a beast, feeling like it's probably double the size, length and girth of the Sony SEL1670Z 16-70mm F4 lens it is likely to replace for use on my Sony a6400 camera. Compared to the very diminutive Sony E PZ 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS kit lens it's like an oil tanker next to a jet ski. Fit, finish and focus are all first rate. The edge to edge sharpness is exemplary for a wide to short tele lens, nothing less than very good wide open and very impressive stopped down even one. The f/2.8 speed is of course very useful and in the you get what you pay for department the lens has Sony compatible stabilization. So all in all this is a winner. But it does make a bit of a mockery of the idea of using camera bodies that are prized for their small and very compact dimensions. It's a bit like attaching a cannon to matchbox. In any case, well worth the price from an image quality standpoint.

This is THE BEST Zoom lens for the Price!
Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2025This Lens has been incredible! It looks and feels so premium, and the quality has been outstanding! I am just getting started into my photography journey but I can tell you this lens has been a game changer over my kit lenses. the f2.8 make the low light environments so much more workable and the background blur is next level. The images looks super sharp and the autofocus works very fast. the only very slightly negative thing I would say is the lens does have a bit of weight to it, but for the wide range of zoom you get paired with the constant f2.8 it more than worth its weight in gold! I've seriously never been more happy with such a purchase and I cannot wait to get my next Tamron lens!

The perfect "do a lot very well" lens
Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2026Fantastic lens. The best value for the money with this set of features and range. Good for the price
Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2025Great lens, nice and sharp, not heavy and build pretty tough considering the price. Smooth turns on the rings - it doesn't have the same weight and build of some of the older Canon or Nikon glass - but that doesn't show up on the images it produces.

Upgraded my camera
Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2025Fantastic lens! The 17-70mm range is so versatile, making it perfect for everything from landscapes to portraits. The constant f/2.8 aperture delivers great low-light performance and beautiful background blur. The image stabilization works really well, and the lens feels solid without being too heavy. Sharp images, fast autofocus, and excellent value compared to other options—highly recommend for anyone looking to upgrade their kit lens.

R. P.5 out of 5 starsSuper Alltagsobjektiv für APS-C – scharf, lichtstark und vielseitig

Giacomo5 out of 5 starsTamron 17-70mm f/2.8
Reviewed in Italy on June 4, 2025Versatilità e qualità ottica in un solo obiettivo
• Stabilizzazione VC integrata: molto utile nelle riprese video e negli scatti a mano libera.
• Leggerissima distorsione a 17mm, correggibile via software o direttamente in macchina.
