Benjamin Gleitzman

Co-Founder & CTO of Replicant

As one of the world's foremost artificial intelligence engineers, Ben was recruited to Atomic to build the technology behind Replicant, a virtual AI call center to handle customer calls for businesses.

Previously Ben had invented the technology behind eBay's personalized feed which is where he met Atomic founder Jack Abraham. Jack and Ben both believed that machines were ready to have useful, complex conversations, and together with fellow co-founder Gadi Shamia, Replicant was born. The company has since gone on to raise $110 million to help solve the customer service crisis, and landed customers that include Spirit Airlines and DoorDash.

Tell me a little bit about your background.

For many years, I worked in the world of art and aesthetics in the art galleries of New York. I thought this was where I was going to spend the rest of my life because it was such an interesting space where I got to interact with interesting people on a daily basis. I also previously worked as a senior software engineer at Hunch, a collective intelligence decision making system that got acquired by eBay.

What sparked your interest in entrepreneurship?

I've always been interested in creating and building. It doesn't matter whether that's building an algorithm, a large scale art project, or a company that will last for decades. In the past I built an App Inventor for Android that’s currently being used at the MIT Center for Mobile Learning, and NextStep Tech, an organization teaching software engineering, creative thinking, and entrepreneurship to junior and high school students.

Why did you decide to co-found with Atomic?

Atomic removes the worry from being a founder. Founder journeys are always going to be like the peaks of Everest and the depths of the Mariana Trench, but there are many things you don’t have to worry about as an Atomic founder. You can try an idea, and it can fail. Then you can get up and try another idea. Atomic’s ability to build a dream team is next level. They just do such a good job. At Replicant we were able to build a fantastic core founding team of engineers, product managers, and later on bring in a phenomenal CEO and co-founder.

What would you say to someone thinking about taking the leap into entrepreneurship?

Being a manager and someone who's on the founding team, you get to see exactly how the sausage is made. There's so much that you don't pick up in school, that you can really only learn on the job. It’s an amazing gift to see all of the ins and outs of fundraising, developing a sales and marketing team, and setting up a go to market strategy.

What have you learned from your journey?

I've learned so much from building Replicant at Atomic. I think it's made me a better engineer. It's made me a better creator. Replicant has taught me a lot about ethical best practices too. It's been great to be given the opportunity to lead but I also love that part of my job still involves coding.

Vijay Menon

CEO of Butter

Vijay Menon joined Atomic to solve a $443 billion problem no one knew about, accidental payment churn.

While working at Xbox he discovered a huge number of people trying to pay for the service that weren't able to sign up for it. Subscriptions were failing to renew because credit cards were accidentally declined. When Vijay dug into the problem he ended up recovering over ten million Xbox Live subscriptions worth more than $100 million in recovered revenue. In subsequent roles at Dropbox and Scribd, Vijay confirmed that the problem of accidental payment failures wasn’t exclusive to Microsoft. He later joined Atomic to build a payments intelligence platform that solves this problem which has resulted in helping subscription companies immediately boost revenues by over 5%.

Tell me a bit about your background.

Travel has always been a big part of my identity, and in 2018 I wrote a book about one of my trips called A Brown Man in Russia: Lessons Learned on the Trans-Siberian. It’s a story about the importance of cross-cultural connections, which is ultimately what motivated me to start Butter. Many accidental payment failures happen internationally and it’s usually traced back to old antiquated payments rails that lead to false declines.

When did you realize that accidental churn was a universal problem?

After joining Dropbox, I quickly noticed that more than half of their users were churning because of payment failure. A minority of churned users were asking to leave; but there was another segment of users who were being systematically churned from the service if the company couldn't successfully collect payment from them... I built a product to solve the issue we were having with accidental payment failure and within a year, we reduced the customers getting churned out due to accidental payment failure by 75%. That’s when it started clicking for me: if Microsoft and Dropbox can’t solve this, then all B2C subscription organizations probably deal with this — and they’re not thinking about it. Let's fix that.

How did you end up co-founding a company with Atomic?

To be honest, I didn't dream of being a founder — in fact, I thought I'd continue my journey in product across the Valley. But then a mutual friend introduced me to Atomic — and after a two hour whiteboard jam in their Presidio office, they asked if I had ever thought about starting a company. Two months later, I decided, "why not take a shot at this?" The founder-market fit was there, the problem space was clear, and I wanted the chance to solve it at scale. So I took the leap — and I've never looked back!

What was it like to be a first-time founder at Atomic?

I was learning to apply several new skills for the first time. While I didn't quite know how to do everything that encompasses building a successful business, I did know the payments space really well. I had built our MVP product internally three times in the past — but productizing it, pricing it, and selling it as a market solution was a new challenge. The combination of Atomic's warm intros and credibility were very meaningful in closing our first couple of accounts. I was able to lean into my domain expertise to know what to build — meanwhile, I leaned into Atomic's expertise in helping to bootstrap the business and augmenting our initial exposure to customers. We've validated our business in sprinting from 0 to 1, and Butter is now moving rapidly towards our goal of unlocking access to payments and products for all.

Andrew Collins

Co-Founder of Bungalow

In 2016, Andrew had just moved to San Francisco and was experiencing the competitive and expensive housing market firsthand. There he found an underserved market of young professionals who wanted the flexibility to move to a new city without a long-term lease while having a local community and friend network. Six years later, Bungalow was the largest co-living company in the U.S., with over 6,000 residents in over 20 markets in the U.S.

Why did you decide to build at Atomic?

The opportunity for mentorship from seasoned entrepreneurs that drew me in. It let me take a bet on myself and helped me fast forward Bungalow into becoming a high functioning organization much more quickly. It was beneficial to get perspective on the things to get early clarity on versus some things that should wait and great to work with other operators that truly understand the challenges of building a company in its early days.

What advice would you give to others on finding the right cofounder?

Entrepreneurship really has its highs and lows, so it’s important to know how you and your co-founder will deal with adversity. Will you run towards the fire or away from it? Trust is the biggest component and it helps to have a common viewpoint on the world. Your roles in the company can evolve over time, in fact that’s the sign of a great co-founder relationship. Find out if your working style is different, and how so? In our case, we might have different opinions on how to approach a problem but we share the vision of what we want to achieve which lets us talk through it and realize we’re aligned. Plus we’re both deeply analytical so we like to bring data into our discussions.

What is your advice to an entrepreneur starting a company today?

Have enormous conviction on why you’re doing this, you’ll need that to help you through adversity. Keep going back to that as life gives you curveballs and use the hard times as an opportunity to grow.

What keeps you motivated?

Housing is fundamentally broken and I’m excited about the opportunity that Bungalow has to change that. I get a lot of joy around solving really hard problems with friends and teammates and helping colleagues develop.

Hilary Coles

Co-Founder of Hims & Hers

Hilary didn’t think of herself as an entrepreneur when she was first approached to join the founding team at Hims & Hers. Although she shared the team’s passion for de-stigmatizing under-looked health issues, her background was untraditional.

Before business school, Hilary led marketing and business development at a Canadian nonprofit focused on de-stigmatizing challenges facing military families, especially around mental health. This experience gave Hilary first hand insights into the importance of getting people access to the right healthcare resources, and the positive impact this has on people’s lives. It also taught her the power of building a thoughtful product and brand strategy to galvanize a movement and a community. It turned out that Hilary’s background made her exactly the right co-founder to help make Hims & Hers the breakout success it is today.

What was it like founding a company with Atomic?

When I first joined Atomic I actually started working on solving a different problem, I was managing marketing for one of the top iOS productivity apps. I met Hims & Hers co-founder and CEO Andrew Dudum just as the idea for the company was starting to take shape and we began exploring problems that no one had dared to address in men’s healthcare. We talked about brands we were excited about, beliefs we had about consumers, and where we thought culture was going. It felt like a natural fit. Building at Atomic gave us the resources to learn, grow, and experiment. It made becoming a founder a lot less intimidating because it was about solving problems in a research environment with data to help drive decisions. I've always been grateful to Atomic for being open to non-traditional backgrounds.

How did you land on the right problem to solve?

When I moved to the U.S. from Canada, I couldn’t believe how complicated it was to navigate the healthcare system here. I’ve always believed that consumers should be in control of their own healthcare. We did a lot of research and learned that there weren't many people trying to improve men’s healthcare at that time. And no one was thinking about healthcare consumers as customers. We knew there had to be a better way to make the experience of booking a doctor’s visit more accessible as telemedicine was starting to become accepted. Getting started wasn’t easy. At the beginning, manufacturers told us, “if you want to pay us you can, but this is going to fail terribly. No one's interested in these products you’re trying to make.” They said they felt bad for taking our money because this is an industry that hadn’t shifted in decades and this is just the way things are. After we finally convinced them to take a chance on us, we blew through what we had ordered from them in days, not months.

What was the secret to building Hims & Hers into a successful D2C brand?

In the early days of Hims & Hers, no one wanted to talk about the conditions we were solving because it was so stigmatized. People would avoid us at cocktail parties and investors would turn us down. We realized we had to approach the problem with humor. The problem is so emotional for people that the brand needed to be built in a very human way. Our aim was to make our customers laugh about it. Core to our success was listening to our customers and what they need and want. Staying in touch with customer needs is critical. Once you start scaling an idea, you become pretty far removed from that customer. It’s really to continue those feedback loops with consumers to get up-to-date information.

Nikki teamed up with Atomic to start Homebound in 2017 to rebuild the communities impacted by the devastating Sonoma wildfires.

Homebound has raised $130 million in venture capital from investors that include Thrive Capital, Google Ventures, Khosla Ventures and Fifth Wall, and expanded Homebound to serve markets with low housing supply, making building the perfect home possible for anyone, anywhere. 

Previously, Nikki was an early executive at Thumbtack, where she made it easier to get home projects done and was instrumental in scaling the platform into the industry's fastest-growing home services marketplace and a $3 billion business. Her professional journey began at Pepsi, where she built consumer brands that people love in highly competitive markets. This was followed by Bain & Company, where she led innovation strategy projects, helping companies transform into the digital age. Her entrepreneurial mindset also led her to Related Companies, the global real estate powerhouse, where she led forward-thinking strategies in property development.

Nikki is deeply engaged in the broader business and technology communities. She serves on the Board of Directors for Thrivent Financial, a Fortune 500 financial services organization, and is an active angel investor. Nikki graduated from the University of Michigan and earned her M.B.A. at Harvard.

In 2023, Keith ranked #25 on the Forbes U.S. Midas list and #33 globally.

He started his technology career with leadership roles at PayPal, as their EVP of Business Development, Public Affairs & Policy, before joining LinkedIn as VP of Business & Corporate Development, and finally, Block (formerly known as Square), as Chief Operating Officer.

Keith Rabois served as a litigator at Sullivan and Cromwell, a prominent law firm, following his clerkship for the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Stanford University and earned a juris doctor degree with honors from Harvard University.

Sean Roberts is CEO of Villa, the largest ADU builder in California.

Prior to Villa, he served as both COO and CFO at Orchard, a proptech company with vertically-integrated real estate brokerage, title/escrow, and mortgage offerings and innovative capital-enabled consumer offerings. Before Orchard, Sean was an investor at TPG, a leading global private equity firm, where he focused primarily on investments in operationally-intensive real estate oriented businesses. He began his career as an investment banker in the Financial Institutions Group at Goldman Sachs.

He has served on corporate boards in the past. Sean holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Commerce from Queen’s University in Canada.

Co-Founder of Hims & Hers

Andrew Dudum is the Chief Executive Officer of Hims and member of their board of directors. He co-founded Hims and has been the Chief Executive Officer and a director since September 2016.

Before Hims, he helped co-found Atomic. He has since played an integral role in developing a dozen of our innovative companies including Bungalow, Homebound, TalkIQ, and Terminal.

A serial founder at his core, he continues to grow as an active angel investor and valued advisor to various startup companies, such as Cherubic Ventures, a China and U.S. based early-stage venture capital firm. 2020 saw Dudum appear on Fortune’s 40 Under 40 list. He received a B.A. in Management and Economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
