Weekly Project: Lace Scarf September 19, 2010

My project this week is a free pattern from Michaels for a lace scarf.  Now that fall is nearing, I am thinking of knitted scarves, hat and gloves. Their recommendation is Fisherman’s wool yarn.  I chose a beautiful, golden, acrylic yarn that was given to me by a friend.  So far this pattern looks fantastic in this golden color.

Reminds me of the pattern of life.

Here is the pattern:

Size 9 knitting needles

Size: about 9 x 69 inches

Pattern Stitch

Row 1:  K3, *yo, K2tog, rep from * to last 3 stitches, K3.

Rows 2 and 4:  K3, P to last 3 sts, K3

Rows 5 and 8:  K3, * K3tog, K4, yo, K1, yo, K4, rep from * to last 3 sts, K3

Rows: 6,7 and 9:  K3, *P3tog, P4, yo, P2, to, P4, rep from * to last 3 sts, K3

Rows: 10-18:  Rep rows 1-9.

You may choose to change colors with q 18 rows or remain with one color.

As I have worked on my scarf this week, I  thought of the phrase art imitates life.  In my mind, the pattern represented the ebb and flow of life. .    The yo is such an integral part of the pattern, but basically creates a beautiful hole in the pattern.  This reminds me  of our experiences with disappointment, loss and grief which comes and goes in our lives. They create holes in our hearts and souls, but are an integral part of who we are.  But these holes do not stop us, we keep going.  The knit rows and purl rows represent the continuity in our lives, when we feel happy and content. Of course, the knit 3 together and purl 3 together makes me think of the relationships we develop.  At times, I struggled with the k3 and p3 together.  I am more comfortable with the k2 tog.  Yes, we all know as much as we need and love our relationships, they can be difficult at times.  But we work on them and continue to knit our relationships together with the knowledge that we know the pattern of life will change and we will have periods o  and know periods of those holes with disappointments and grief.

But the entire pattern of our life is absolutely beautiful, because our life pattern is ours unlike anyone else and makes us who we are.

Blessings,

B.K.

Back to my Net10 Story September 11, 2010

Approximately three weeks ago, I purchased a new Net10 phone.  My current cell phone was starting to have difficulty maintaining the charge.  Since I am not an avid cell phone user,  my phone was five years old, so it was time for a change.  Following the purchase, we had difficulty with the activation on their designated web site.  My daughter who is “tech savvy” had difficulty also.  So I chose the activation by phone, how painful could this be right?  The customer service individual was very courteous, but I had some difficulty understanding her at times. I asked her three times where she was located and I never was able to understand her response.  One of my requests was to maintain my current Net10 phone number, which I assume would be a daily request with purchases of new phones.  All the codes were entered, but now they have to mail me a new SIM card in order to maintain my number.  OK, this could take 3-7 days.  Seven days seemed excessive to me, since this would be mailed from Florida, but there are no alternatives.  The customer service lady provided me with instructions on the method to activate the phone on the website, once the SIM card arrived.

Yes, the SIM card arrived in three days.  I noticed on my phone that the days were being deducted on the prepaid plan, even though my phone was not working.  Interesting?  I attempted to follow her directions for activation on the website.  Her directions did not correlate with the options.  Once again, I chose the telephone option.  As before, the customer service representative was very courteous, but I had difficulty understanding him at times.  He was located in Guyana.  We worked on activation of the phone for a total of 75 minutes.  This seemed lengthy to me, all I wanted was to maintain my number.  The last twenty minutes of the call, I was on intermittent  hold.  He would return periodically to apologize for the wait and my activation was in process.  At the conclusion, the last code was not accepted.  The customer service rep blew this off as the phone was in the process of activation.  I started to question why this was taking so long and requested that they contact me when the phone was activation.  Not a feasible request, they don’t contact customers.  He assured me the phone would be activated within four hours and they would send text when activated.

The next morning, the phone was still not activated, but another day was deducted from my service.  With hesitancy, I contacted the customer service number again.  My initial request was if there was customer service available in the United States.  Not a reasonable request, this service was not available.  But, after entering one more code, the phone was activated five days after purchase.

No complaints with the phone or the service following activation.  My advice is: if you have to activate over the phone have plenty of time and patience.

Enjoy!!

Stay Away from Net 10 Mobile Phone Service August 18, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — bkknits @ 10:47 pm

Their customer service does not even rate a 0.  I will write more tomorrow.  Right now I am exhausted from being on the phone with their customer service attempting to activate a new phone.  The length of the call was only eighty minutes.  On top of that, I still don’t have service and the last code was not even valid.  Of course, today was my second call to them this week.

I’m exhausted, I must go to bed.  Details of this debacle to follow tomorrow.  Just don’t buy a net 10 phone.

Let me know your own customer service story with Net 10.

Embellishing With Iron-On Transfers August 10, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — bkknits @ 7:49 am

Embellishing on a budget can be a constant struggle.  One consideration is utilizing iron-on transfers.  I started using this simple method a few years ago, when I overheard a conversation at a boutique sale, regarding using iron-on transfers for children’s tee-shirts.  So I decided to give it a try.  You can purchase packages of iron-on transfers at fabric and craft stores.  There are transfers for both dark and light fabrics.  To date, I have only used the light fabric transfers.

Be sure and read the specific directions on the package.  You will need a computer printer, iron and a firm, flat surface such as a table.  I have a digital scrapbook program which gives me the ability to enhance and add text to my planned design.  There are also some on-line designs at some webs

I have embellished bags, tee shirts, pillow cases and wall hangings with iron-on transfers.  A simple method to bring out your creativity and complete some fine embellishments for your home and wardrobe.
