Are you feeling lucky?

Friday the 13th. Unlucky for some, but not for you as it means you get an evening of fun with us at the bar Convent! Come along from 5pm for a good time, perhaps roll a few dice 🎲 and get lucky.

And lucky for me I got to attend the BM! AGM last night with the other club organisers and members. We discussed how the club’s going and some things we want to do over the year ahead. As always we’ll have the minutes available to share soon for anyone who wasn’t able to attend yesterday and we look forward to bringing some of the details to life for you all in the coming weeks and months. Watch this space…

But for now, one action I took was to remind you all that as part of our WhatsApp community we have a dedicated message channel for weekly reminders. I post once each week (usually on a Monday) to remind you of the next session. The messages are short and sweet (unlike the blog), and it’s kept separate from the regular club chatter. If you’d like to get the reminders but aren’t sure how, just ask an organiser at one of our sessions and we’ll help you out!

February Fun! (And AGM Reminder)

Hey everyone, it’s Games Officer Paul here, taking on blog duties for the month of February. I’ve got some great news for you: BM!’s on this weekend and you’re invited. The Bar Convent’s the place to be from 10am ’til 9pm Saturday 7th. See you there!

And a reminder that we have our AGM (which I believe stands for Awesome Gamers Meeting) next week, Tuesday 10th at 6:45pm. All club members are welcome to join us as we discuss the running of the club. If you have an idea, feedback, want to get involved in organising things, or just interested to hear what we have to say, get in touch with an organiser or drop the club an email to [email protected] and we’ll be happy to share the meeting invite.

BM! This Saturday!

Hi everyone, apologies for the late post, but wanted to let everyone know BM is on this Saturday, 31st January, for our 5th Saturday special. Loads of great games as always so please come along. Also, there is an author signing and q&a in the Bedingfield room until 13:00, so we will ask for the usual whooping and hollering that comes with certain games to be in the Aspinal room, and the quiet, more sedate games to take place in the Gascoigne.

Additionally, just a reminder that we have our AGM on the 10th Feb. If you are interested in attending please get in touch.

Looking forward to seeing you all this Saturday, Mark

Meeting this Friday and BM AGM (people needed)

Hi everyone, just a reminder we meet again this Friday afternoon/ evening for more boardgames goodness. Just a reminder we have new games for 2026, including perennial favourite “The Gang” and new hit “Civolution”.

AGM news! If you’ve ever wondered how BM manages to run so smoothly*, wonder no more! It’s all down to the fantastic efforts of our volunteers who run the various parts of the club, and make curious decisions about what games to buy. If you’d like to get involved, either by telling us what’s working and what’s not, or by offering to help out in any way, our AGM is on Tuesday 10th February at 6:45pm. It’s online, so if you want to attend please just email us, or reach out on Whatsapp or anywhere else for a link to join.

BM this Saturday from 10

Hi everyone, we are meeting again this Saturday from 10, for our first Saturday BM of 2026. I know some people will be bringing new games along (I’ve got a small gift of the Norwegians Expansion for the club I’ll be teaching) so come along and maybe try some new games!

Also, for those who like old classics, Andrew Brown and John McCullough are running some Friedrich games at BM on 17 January. Everyone, including new players, are welcome to play a game or try part of a game. Friedrich is an elegant game about the 7 years war and usually takes 3-5 hours to play. The Rules can be mastered in 15 minutes. The tactics and strategies take a lifetime to master. York is hosting an international tournament (Friedrich UK26) in June. It would help if those interested e-mail John ([email protected]) to book a place on the 17th but walk-ins also welcome (although places cannot be guaranteed to walk-ins).

Hope to see you all there!

First BM of 2026!

Happy new year everyone, hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and New Year, and got plenty of new games. Our first BM of 2026 is this Friday from 5pm until 9pm, in our usual place at the Bar Convent on Blossom Street. If you’re interested but have never been before than consider making a visit a resolution for 2026, if your interested at all in modern gaming then we’d love to have you visit.

See you soon! Mark

Last BM session before xmas! Saturday 20th December!

Also the last session of 2025! How the year has flown by! Join us 10am till 9pm in the Bar Convent for fun and games.

With it being so close to xmas I had to do a lil google search for a board gamed themed xmas tree or similar; and look! A tree made from board games! Do you spot a favourite of yours?

The first session of 2026 isn’t until Friday 9th January – almost three weeks away!!! But don’t worry, there is the whatsapp you might already be a part of! Suggest a pub or other public venue to meet up and play with your fellow gamers. Don’t be shy, others might also be free and wishing to play!

Friday 12th, only Friday meet this month!

Only two BM sessions left till Christmas! Will you be joining us this Friday at the Bar Convent 5pm till 9pm?

Any winter or festive games on your mind to play? Any you wish to borrow to play with the family? Speak to one of our organisers about that!

Hope to see you there! And for those I don’t see: Merry Christmas!!

December is here, so is our 1st session of the month: Saturday

We will be in our usual rooms at the Bar Convent from 10am till 9pm tomorrow, Saturday 6th December. Perhaps you could also enjoy lunch at the bar convent cafe – I wonder if they might have a special menu that day going into the season…

To get us in the Christmas spirit, why not play a game of Gift Trap? Its a fun party game in our cupboard that can take up to 8 people and it is all about giving and receiving gifts.

Or eye up one of the other 480 games (plus others people bring in themselves) and send hints to others of what games you might want… It sometimes works!

BONUS BEYOND MONOPOLY! – SATURDAY 29th NOVEMBER

Hi folks

Beyond Monopoly! Session Friday 21st November 2025

Hi folks

This is just your friendly reminder that after last weekend’s sojourn to Up A Level (where at one point everyone was playing current BGG hottie The Old King’s Crown – more than one copy was brought in) we will back at the Bar Convent tonight for our regular Friday-night gaming fun – we hope to see you there!

I may even bring The Old King’s Crown again tonight…

BM! at Up A Level Saturday November 15th 2025

Hey folks,

Today’s key message is that this Saturday’s BM! session (November 15th) will be at Up A Level at 12 Feasegate First and Second floor, York YO1 8SQ. NB they also have an entrance around the corner on Market Street (between Divine Coffee and Costa Coffee) which is the one I usually use.

PLEASE don’t go to the Bar Convent as while you’ll get a nice cup of coffee in the café you won’t find anyone playing games! (Coffee seems to be an emerging theme as I type this, maybe I should go make myself a cup…)

We’ll be there from 10 as normal.

A couple of related points:

  • Unlike our previous sessions at Up A Level, the club has paid for the room hire and members pay the club – usual Saturday rates apply. However, to avoid having to take the cash-box out of the Convent, payment will be by card / contactless only – apologies to cash lovers.
  • As we won’t have access to the club collection this will be a great opportunity to bring along a game or two that you’ve been wanting to play!

See you on Saturday,

Jim
