Tiny Sith Apprentice

Came across this really cool mock-up of a Darth Yoda and thought that it would be fun to make a generic Sith Apprentice in this vein. I had left over Even Piell and Yoda miniatures to create this piece…basically just swapped his head.

New Knight Models 70mm Han Solo is coming out…cannot say I’m crazy about the pose, but the model is very well done.

Well another miniature created from parts of the not so fortunate. He is basically the Sith Apprentice, a Muun Tactics Broker’s left arm and the Chagrian Mercenary Commander’s right arm. I created his hat out of a fantasy miniature’s shield.

Vader & His 501st Legion

Posted in Sci-Fi on February 13, 2011 by botwt

Image

Finished off Darth Vader and a small sample of his 501st Legion. With the outstanding Knight Models version of Vader being poised on a rock I decided to base his stormtroopers on simple sand/ballast bases.

For the 501st troops I wanted them to look as if they were transitioning from the clone trooper armor to the newer stormtrooper version. My captain (Appo?) has a clone helmet while the others just get a bit of blue on their shoulder pads for accent. I used these photos as the basis for my idea.

For the captain’s helmet I picked up a cheap clone trooper and pinched it.

For the rank and file troops I used a myriad stormtroopers, sand troopers and scout troopers, gave them some blue accents and they were ready to go.

Finally Darth Vader. I used several shades of black and grey to get the look I needed for the different materials in his armor. Photograph does nothing for my paint job, but you can still get the idea of what he looks like.

Oácyning: Lord of the Oak-Enta

Posted in Lord of the Rings / Fantasy on February 13, 2011 by botwt

Image

With a bit of conversion work I am sure I can make Oácyning into another Lord of the Rings Ent. Before long I’m going to have the whole damned forest of Fangorn…the trick is getting all these boys painted! At £59.99 he is a bit pricey, but there doesn’t need to be one than one of these purchased so I think I can deal with the cost. God, this hobby is expensive and addicting, but at least it isn’t detrimental to my health unless the wife gets a sniff of what I spent on this one. Might have to call it a Valentine’s Day present, hehe.

Games Workshop + Hobbit Gaming Licence?

It appears that Games Workshop has acquired the gaming licence to The Hobbit based on the upcoming film by Peter Jackson. That will be just awesome for me…I cannot get enough of their hobbits or dwarves.

Knight Models Darth Vader & Darth Maul Review

Posted in Reviews / Uncategorized / Misc. on February 5, 2011 by botwt

Today I got the two Knight Models miniatures in the mail, took a bit longer due to the first package being lost over Christmas, but the wait was well worth it! New cooler looking packaging from the earlier 30mm releases but still gives the painted model reference photo on the back which I am glad they have done. Now on to the miniatures.

Image

Darth Vader is simply awesome, the scale is spot on perfect for 30mm and will work great with the WotC miniatures. He comes separate from his rocky base so you can choose to mount him to it or not. Also has a separate head, arm and lightsaber so you can monkey around a bit with positioning or converting. I am very happy with this purchase! 10+

Image

Darth Maul is also a very well sculpted and detailed piece. A bit smaller than Vader (as he should be) probably on scale with their Anakin Skywalker miniature…probably more in the 28mm scale than 30mm, but that is fine. I always assumed he was a smaller dude anyway when looking at the actor that played him in the film. This Maul model comes with both arms unattached so again you can mess around with the positioning. 9 outta a possible 10 due to the smaller scale, but still nowhere near as tiny as Chewie, which has been my only let down thus far from Knight Models.

These are two must haves for any Star Wars fan, or any of us miniatures painters regardless of what you collect (just wish they would choose a different style base to package with their models other than the boring 25mm round base)…I cannot wait to get crackin’ on these new additions!

Chagrian Jedi Knight

Posted in Sci-Fi on February 3, 2011 by botwt

Image

I had this extra Chagrian Mercenary Commander lying about so I decided to put him to some use and convert him into a Chagrian Jedi Knight. I did consider making Darth Wyyrlok from this piece, but he isn’t really in the era of Star Wars I am working on…so stayed with the Jedi idea. For his body I used my Knight Models Anakin…didn’t need to keep him as Anakin/Vader any longer seeing how I think my WotC version came out pretty nice.

Star Wars Miniatures Battles

Posted in Sci-Fi on February 1, 2011 by botwt

Image

Just picked up this OOP Star Wars Miniatures Battles rulebook from West End Games published in 1993. It’s the second edition and might be worth mucking about in a skirmish game here and there seeing how I have quite the collection going with these WotC and Knight Models miniatures. I am really not a gamer, but for $12 I figure that it cannot hurt to own this once praised set of rules that won the Origins International Game Expo award for Best New Miniatures Rules of 1991…not sure what the hell that’s worth, but if these rules suck I am only out a few dollars and no harm done.
