Glasgow Film Theatre screening.

I knew literally nothing about this film the first time I saw it outside of the Amano and Oshii names, so had no expectations for it. And even though I never fully understood it back then (because who does) I was immensely mesmerised by it.

And while it's been many years since that first viewing... it never really left my mind. It's always just been there, lingering in the background like an unsolved puzzle.

The art...

The mood...

The symbolism...

The final shot...

As an art piece it's got masterpiece vibes tbh.

UK Premiere at the Glasgow Film Theatre, and with Takeshi Koike in attendance to boot!

I definitely would have enjoyed this movie more if I had the full context (and might revisit later) but as it stands, this was me watching the final of five films and catching the tail end of a particular narrative arc without the earlier context.

The conversations afterwards were interesting and it was a cool experience overall though.

First time seeing a 'Cartoon Saloon' movie. Loved the artistry, the Celtic folklore, the story, the music, and all the other bits. A wonderful film that could easily stand shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Disney, Pixar and Ghibli.

Will definitely be watching the other Saloon movies. Sooner rather than later.

The art and style is unlike any other animated film I've seen; the closest thing to it that I can think of is like, a series of Salvador Dali paintings; and I'm a big Dali fan. The music is really great too - a wild yet familiar sort of psychedelic jazz sound - and the first thing I actually did after watching was check online to see if there was…
