"Old Ben Butler is dead!. . . so wrote an obituary in the 'Nashville Daily American'. The obituary continues to state he must be so deep down in the pit of everlasting doom that "he couldn't get the most powerful ear trumpet conceivable to scientists and hear the echoes of old Gabriel's trumpet, or fly 1,000,000 kites and get a message to St. Peter, who stands guard at heaven's gate" {1}.

As an attorney, Benjamin Butler was in Washington, D.C., in January of 1893 arguing a case before the United States Supreme Court. It seems fitting that the last days of his life would be associated...
Strategic Hex Game The Warwick line in On To Richmond

This is a look at the Warwick line in On To Richmond, and how the portrayal compares with the actual historical layout of the line.

For the purposes of this analysis I have removed from the visual aid everything that doesn't in-game start under a FORT marker - that is, already fully fortified.

Going from south to north:

The lower reaches of the Warwick are impassable. This is, I think, correct - south of Lee's Mill the Warwick is permanently of an unfordable depth, and was patrolled by the CS gunboat Teaser. Any attempt to bridge this river would be shelled to bits by the Teaser.

Lee's Mill is correctly represented as a bridge, and the pre-existing fortifications there are...

Mission Statement

CivilWarTalk is a forum for students and fans of the American Civil War. Our online community of Historians, Skirmishers, Re-enactors, Educators, and Enthusiasts is dedicated to the exchange of ideas and information related to the War Between the States. Our goal is to become the leading resource for every researcher seeking historical information and opinions relating to the American Civil War.

The American Civil War

The American Civil War, arguably the most traumatic event in the history of the United States, was fought from 1861 to 1865, and was the culmination of sectional issues which deeply divided the country between a pro-Federal government North and a pro-states rights, in the pro-slavery South, whose eleven states formed a breakaway government called the Confederate States of America. The costliest war in terms of human lives, the American Civil War claimed in excess of 620,000 battle or disease-related deaths - roughly two percent of the country's total population, and nearly more deaths than all other American wars combined.
