Inspiration
We were inspired to create Advoca-World to ensure that youth activists today feel inspired and encouraged to create real change in the world. Youth activism has the amazing potential to reshape communities, and it provides significant advantages for individuals who engage, particularly low-income youth, youth of color, and other young people who have historically been sidelined from civic life. Many of the features of Advoca-World were inspired by the tools necessary for youth to set foot into the world of activism. It is our goal to make advocacy and civic engagement easily accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or identity!
What it does
Advoca-World is a one-stop hub for aspiring and established youth activists to connect and create tangible impacts in their communities. Currently, there isn’t a centralized space to actively find and join organizations for various activism, community organization, and social movement efforts, and to find contact information for state representatives of all states. Our website centralizes this data and makes it easily and readily accessible to youth leaders looking to turn their aspirations into action and real world impact.
How we built it
We built Advoca-World using HTML, CSS, and lots of love! 💖 We used Replit to host our website.
Challenges we ran into
When designing and developing Advoca-World, we were very ambitious with our plans which made it difficult to implement all of the features that we wanted to add. We learned about various HTML and CSS tools and worked hard to apply them to our final project. Another challenge we faced was finding information from accurate and reliable sources that we could add to our website. We ended up spending a lot of time researching social issues in various states across the nation, however, this only further motivated us to complete our project since we could centralize all of this information for our users. We also only formed our team in the middle of the hackathon, which made time constraints especially difficult. Despite this, we were still able to partner well together, discuss our ideas, and decide how to delegate tasks based on our strengths! This helped facilitate our completion of the project on time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re extremely proud of building this website and providing this resource for youth around the world. We believe that having resources and information of all 50 states centralized onto one site is useful, and promotes advocacy. We hope that youth activists continue to reach out and be motivated to make positive changes in our community, we’re proud that our website allows them to do exactly that.
What we learned
Through researching and developing the project, we learned about prominent issues affecting our society, and the many non-profit organizations around the nation aiming to tackle these issues. It’s empowering to learn about and immerse ourselves into the various groups hoping to bridge inequality, fight for racial justice, equal treatment, etc. Additionally, we learned about many cool HTML features including animating buttons and more. Most importantly, we learned to communicate and work efficiently with each other. Though we live on opposite sides of the country, we’re both connected with our shared passion for activism, advocacy, and social justice.
What's next for Advoca-World
We plan to frequently update the site to include the latest social justice news, issues, and current events by state so everyone can be up to date about the issues around the nation. We will also be adding more and more organizations and more categories such as school violence, income inequality, police brutality, and more. Additionally, we will continue to build a wide user base and network of youth activists ready to make their dreams into tangible impacts. Our website is important as it allows youth to easily access different activism organizations, as well as contact information so they can reach out to senators and join organizations from the same site. We hope to inspire the future generation of youth activists to become tomorrow’s leaders.
