Inspiration

Alcohol use affects millions of people worldwide and is one of the leading causes of preventable illness and death. Too often, people don’t fully realize the risks until it’s too late. We wanted to create a tool that raises awareness, educates users on the dangers, and provides resources for help and recovery — all in one place.

What it does

AlcoholAware is an app that highlights the hidden dangers of alcohol and empowers users with knowledge and support. It explains how alcohol affects the brain, liver, and heart, and how it impacts relationships and society. The app also provides global statistics, crisis hotlines, online support, and connections to recovery groups. Most importantly, it sends a clear health message: no amount of alcohol is safe.

How we built it

We built AlcoholAware as a web app with clear, accessible sections:

Learn the Facts → evidence-based information about health risks

Find Support → hotlines, online chats, and support groups

Statistics Dashboard → global numbers from WHO and CDC

Quick Links → emergency numbers and resources for immediate help

We used frontend tools for design and layout, integrated official health data, and structured the content for clarity and ease of navigation.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing tone → talking about alcohol dangers without sounding judgmental.

Data sourcing → making sure all statistics came from trusted organizations like WHO and CDC.

Scope → deciding what features to include for a hackathon prototype versus what to leave for future development.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Delivering a clean, easy-to-use app in a short hackathon timeline.

Presenting complex medical information in a way that’s clear and understandable.

Including real support links so this project can genuinely help someone in need.

What we learned

Health-focused projects require extra care in accuracy and sensitivity.

Even simple features, like a hotline button or stats page, can have a big real-world impact.

Collaboration around content and design is as important as the technical build.

What's next for AlcoholAware

We’d love to expand AlcoholAware by:

Adding a BAC calculator to give users personalized risk insights.

Building a “Safe Plan” feature with reminders to drink water, track drinks, and call a ride home.

Offering localized support resources so users outside the U.S. can also find help quickly.

Partnering with health organizations to keep the data and resources always up to date.
