Inspiration

We didn't want people to die.

What it does

Users can take pictures of their food and check if it may contain some of the foods they are allergic to.

How I built it

We used an Express server deployed onto Heroku for the back-end. In our server, we utilized the Clarifai Food API, to implement Machine Learning and retrieve a list of possible ingredients to make the food of the picture taken. We also used the Spoonacular API to expand on these ingredients and find more ingredients used in popular recipes.

Challenges I ran into

Installing React Native. We had a lot of trouble building React Native apps to our phone, and only got it working through Expo. However, by using Expo, we were limited to using a lot of the community external libraries that would help style and design our app.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

This was our first time building a mobile app and we're proud that it turned out pretty well.

What I learned

We were all inexperienced with React Native, and learning its different Components and styling was not easy.

What's next for Allergize

Implement recommendations for similar foods that do not match the allergies, and possibly showing recipes for these foods.
