Inspiration
The convenience of the internet has become essential to us in recent years. Despite this, billions of people still do not have access to the internet on-the-go. Our SMS client allows these users to access the current news, weather, stocks, as well as past encyclopedia knowledge and even perform google searches through only text messages.
What it does
Allows users without internet access to retrieve concise information on current news, weather, stocks, encyclopedia knowledge and more through text messages.
How we built it
The SMS client is fundamentally built upon Twilio, Node.Js, Express, RiveScript and MongoDB. This allowed us to set up a webhook that Twilio would interact with while having a dynamic chat using user sessions, allowing us to expand beyond a simple command interface and allowed for conversations with the bot.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest hurdles were a slow host server speed when inputting and outputting text messages, as well as unfamiliarity with the language and environment to some. Despite the learning curve, we worked hard to adapt to new and unknown challenges under a time restraint. In the end, we managed to learn how to deploy the client onto Google Cloud to speed up the server, and also gained more in-depth knowledge in javascript listeners.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
All team members were very fast to adapt to any problems and hurdles, and learnt and applied new material very quickly. Additionally, communication was very efficient and concise, resulting in no conflicts during teamwork.
