💡 Inspiration
After learning about the benefits of reading, the team was surprised to find that reading stats for children are still very low. Especially with software apps such as Duolingo and PokemonGo, the team wanted to leverage similar motivational and innovative technologies to increase the reading engagement for young children.
💻 What it does
Augmented reality (AR) is used to gamify the reading experience. Numerous rewards are used to encourage and motivate readers to continue their progress. Our app allows them to see the world transform around them the more they read! Accumulating objects from the fantastical world where the story takes place, all with a bonus to unlock their favorite character, a new virtual friend that they can interact with!
⚙️ How we built it
The frontend was built using React and TailwindCSS. The backend is a combination of CockroachDB, EchoAR, Node.js and Google Drive. The app is deployed using Heroku. Mockups of the design was made using Figma.
🧠 Challenges we ran into
The first challenge was creating a cluster using CockroachDB and integrating the database with the frontend. The second challenge was implementing an epub reader to display the classic books.
🏅 Accomplishments that we're proud of
Finishing the design and integrating the frontend with the backend code.
📖 What we learned
We learned about the challenges of using epub files and how to use new technologies such as CockroachDB and EchoAR in app development.
🚀 What's next for AReading
For now, our book selection is only limited to public domain ones. A natural next step would be to contract with various book authors and publishers in order to integrate their stories within our app and to expand our offerings to various literary genres and age groups. This would allow us to monetize the app by providing subscriptions for unlimited access to copyrighted books after paying for their royalty fees.
