I'm currently working as a substitute teacher to help fund my way through college, and as someone who is deeply involved in the school system, I'm always thinking about how we can bridge the gap between education and innovation. When I was a kid, there were always educational websites that made learning fun. Now, as media and technology continue to grow, I’ve noticed that many students either aren’t aware of educational websites, or the ones they do find are too focused on being educational, and not as fun. I want to change that. I’m building a website designed for students that advocates for their education by offering links to games and books—especially books that have film adaptations, which I know kids love. My main focus is on reading, because I believe it’s essential to make books easily accessible. With so many free books available through online library systems, it’s a great opportunity for students, but many just don’t know about it! The goal of my website is to create a place where students and parents can find engaging reading material presented in a way that feels more like fun than learning. I want to make sure students can explore literacy in a natural and enjoyable way without realizing they’re on an educational site!
My website is designed to help parents find educational resources easily. It includes links to books that have movie adaptations, and the best part is that most of these books are free with just a library card! I’ve also added links to free websites with fun reading games that kids can enjoy. On top of that, I’ve included some non-traditional reading options, like manga, to get students excited about reading in different ways. Each month, I highlight a Book of the Month—a timeless, critically acclaimed book that also has a movie adaptation, making it easier for students to connect with the story. Lastly, I provide access to the Florida Language Arts Standards for grades 6-8, along with resources to help students practice for standardized tests.
How we built it
I built my website using glitch templets on html and style.css
Challenges we ran into
This was my first website I created by myself. So it was challenging designing the look of the website as well as getting my links to function.
